Today, China’s car industry is at the forefront (领先) of the world. China has already become a leader in the production of electric cars, and Russians are showing a growing interest in Chinese-made electric cars.
In Russia, Chinese cars have already taken up half of the Russian market and their quality is completely comparable to leading brands (品牌) from Korea, Japan and European countries. A recent study showed that more than 53 percent of Russians would like to buy Chinese cars, higher than the rate of 6 percent five years ago. This change suggests a large increase in Russian people’s trust in Chinese cars.
Chinese electric cars are very popular in Russia and data shows that a record 14,000 electric cars were sold in Russia in 2023, with China’s Zeekr (极氪) selling the most, accounting for 26 percent of the total. The Chinese brand Voyah entered the top five in terms of electric car sales in Russia, and the demand for hybrid (混合动力) cars increased. Although sales of electric cars in Russia increased last year, their share of the car market was less than 2 percent. People believe that the Russian electric car market will keep its growth because of government’s support, an increase in brand choices, and increasing charging piles (充电桩). Chinese electric carmakers have considerable potential (潜能) in the Russian market and demand for Chinese electric cars will continue to grow in Russia.

But you’re not in China—you’re in Manchester in Britain. In fact, you might see similar things in many other cities. Chinese products have been going global.
Chinese food has been enjoyed in Western countries for a long time. To meet local people’s tastes, Chinese restaurants have made some changes to the dishes.
“One example is the meat,” said Yin Hang, who is studying at the University of Wollongong in Australia.
“We like to eat meat with the bone in, but people here don’t. Chinese restaurants provide big pieces of meat without bones, even for fish.”
Some Chinese brands are also becoming more popular. In many cities in Europe, stores sell TCL televisions, Haier fridges and Lenovo computers, reported Reuters.
More than half of US-owned drones (无人机) are Chinese models, according to China Daily. They’re not simply made in China, but designed and developed in the country.
In he past, most Western people thought Chinese products were cheap and unreliable. But things have changed greatly. “Made in China” has become cool and more people trust Chinese brands.
For example, Huawei, one of China’s major smartphone makers, overtook Apple in global smartphone sales for the first time in June and July, behind only Samsung, reported by Consulting (咨询) Firm Counterpoint Research.
“They are beautiful and offer some unique features (特点) American phones don’t have,” CNN once said about Chinese smartphones.

Hanfu generally refers to clothing of the Han people before the Manchus reigned in the Qing Dynasty. The traditional costurme often features a long flowing robe with loose sleeves that hang down to the knees and a belt at the waist. In recent years, hanfu has become more and more popular in China. Meng tried on hanfu when she visited the Palace Museum about four years ago, after she found the trend catching on in scenic sites across the capital. “It looked refreshing and carried a sense of ritual (仪式) —sort of a tribute (敬意) to history, especially against the right backdrop (背景),” she says.
As Meng’s interest in the historical clothes grew, she dived deep into relevant (相关的) cultural elements and joined a few interest groups. “It’s interesting to see people discussing hanfu and some of them even greet each other in the old-fashioned way on the streets,” Meng says.
According to a Guangzhou-based market consultancy (咨询公司), China’s hanfu market has been growing rapidly. The number of hanfu fans is expected to reach 6. 89 million this year, and market sales to hit at least 10. 16 billion yuan ($1. 58 billion).
A report showed that female consumers born after 1995 made up the biggest consumer group of hanfu in 2019. Many scenic spots have caught up with the hanfu trend and offer related services to tourists. Popular television dramas and social media influences have also contributed to the hanfu craze.

Gunpowder
Chinese alchemists had tried for centuries to invent something that could make people live forever. Many experiments used a chemical called saltpeter. In the year 850 A.D., a group of alchemists mixed saltpeter with sulfur and charcoal. The mixture burst into flames. The explosion injured the alchemists. It also burned down the house they’d been working in. The Sung Dynasty soon used the new powder in the wars. Chinese soldiers shot ‘flying fire’—arrows(箭)with small tubes filled with gunpowder—at enemies. Gunpowder did the exact opposite of making people live forever. Today, it’s still the basis for most weapons.
Penicillin
Scottish bacteriologist Alexander Fleming made an unexpected discovery in 1928. He’d been experimenting with a plate of bacteria(细菌). One day, he discovered that it had been made dirty by mold(霉菌). He also noticed that the bacteria around the mold had died. More experiments showed that the mold killed many of the bacteria that made people sick. Fleming had accidentally discovered one of the first antibiotics(抗生素)! He named his discovery penicillin, for the mold that had led to the discovery. Two other scientists, Howard Florey and Ernst Boris Chain, created a new version of penicillin. It was used to treat people. The three men won the 1945 Nobel Prize for their life-saving work.
Hook-and-Loop Fasteners(魔术贴)
Swiss engineer George de Mestral went hunting one day in 1941. His pants were covered in burs(刺果)by the time he returned home. He was curious about how the burs stuck to his clothes. When he examined one under a microscope, he saw that the bur had tiny hooks that caught in the loops of cloth. He decided to design a fastener that could do the same thing. At first, nobody took his two-piece ‘hook-and-loop’ fastener seriously. NASA, however, realized its value. It was perfect for holding objects in place during gravity-free space flights. Since the 1960s, clothing companies have been using Velcro(a French word meaning “Hook-and-Loop”), too.

You can take a break in a “mobile hotel” built by Chinese workers, drink water from ponds dug by Chinese, charge your mobile phone with electricity produced at the photovoltaic (光电池的) power stations built by Chinese companies, and take a Chinese green bus to move between hotels and stadiums.
Did we forget something? Yes, some stadiums are built by Chinese companies, and even the gifts you can buy there are made in China, too. That’s how China has taken part in this World Cup, and may do so in the following ones as well: by providing products and services to the sportsmen and fans, and amazing the world with its technology and green products.
While “Made in China” has left its stamp on earlier soccer World Cups and other sports competitions, what makes the Qatar World Cup special is the kind of technology China is providing. For example, the Stadium 974, built by Chinese companies, is the first “green stadium” that can be moved. It can recycle rainwater for future use and turn the waste collected from the stadium into fertilizer (肥料). Besides,China has built an 800 MW photovoltaic station that turns the large amount of sunshine in the Middle East into electricity for the stadium.
The main reason that has made it possible for Chinese companies to perform well in the World Cup is that China has made great progress in green technology. While the whole world suffers from economic slowdown because of COVID-19 and other reasons, Chinese companies have largely continued to run well.

Increasingly, that’s no longer the case, “Chinese people born before 1985 generally think that foreign brands are better than Chinese ones,” billionaire William Li told Business Insider during a recent interview on CCTV 9. But for those who were born after 1985, it is a different picture.
“When I first went to the United Kingdom in 1997, I thought that the difference between China and Europe was quite big,” Li said, “But for those born in the 1990s, when they visit Europe or the US, they do not think there is a big distinction.”
The change in thinking among Chinese buyers is showing up in many markets in China. A study by Credit Suisse found that young Chinese buyers were increasingly showing a home brand bias.
More than 90% of young Chinese buyers prefer to buy home appliance (家用电器) brands, according to the study. Meanwhile, home companies producing food, drinks, or personal care products increased their share of the market by 3.3% over the last ten years to nearly 70%.
“Chinese buyers, especially the younger ones, don’t just believe that foreign brands are better. Right now, Chinese buyers think China is good and that ‘Made in China’ is not bad at all,” Charlie Chen, head of China buyer research at Credit Suisse, told South China Morning Post in March.
The Chinese smartphone market is controlled by home companies. Apple is the only foreign brand in the top five, but it has lost large ground to the home brands in recent years. Its market share is believed to be down to 37% from a 2015 high of 54%.

In these videos, a young child calls out to his or her mother or father; the parent comes into the room smiling, turns around and calls out to his or her own parent; the grandparent then comes into the room smiling and calls out to his or her parent, the great-grandparent. This kind of family is called “four generation (四世同堂)” in China.
It started on Douyin and has been popular in social media in other countries. People from all over the world have talked much about the videos and even made their own. The videos also make some people remember their family members who have been dead. “Because of the video, I will visit my grandmother this weekend,” a Twitter user wrote. “I have to say that family love is usually a strong value in China,” wrote Justin. The “four generation” videos not only touched foreign viewers, but also gave them a deeper look into Chinese family values.
In most East Asian cultures, it is common for many generations of a single family to live together. This is called a big family. In most Western countries, most families are small families, or families that are made up of just children and their parents.
In Western culture, privacy (隐私) and independence (独立) are highly valued. Kids usually move out of the house after they turn eighteen. Many of them borrow money or work part-time jobs in order to pay for college. If they choose to keep living with their parents after growing up, it can be seen as a failure. Although family structures in the East and West may be different, the love between family members is common. That might be why the “four generation” videos have won so many hearts around the world.

People are getting closer to form a “global village” where they live as neighbors, breathe the same air and grow up under the same sky. It’s the age of globalization that affects every aspect of our daily lives, such as entertainment, clothing and food.
Popular culture has become more globalized. People in the US enjoy listening to South African music and reading Japanese comic books. American soap operas are popular in Israel.
India, for example, has a successful movie industry, nicknamed “Bollywood”, which is popular both in India and with the population of Indian people living abroad. Clothing styles have become more uniform as a result of globalization, therefore, national and regional costumes have become less common. There also has been an increasing exchange of foods across the globe. People in England eat Indian curry, while people in Peru enjoy Japanese sushi. Meanwhile, American fast food chains have become common throughout the world. McDonald’s has more than 37, 000 restaurants in over 100 countries. The worldwide development of McDonald’s has become a symbol of globalization. Some menu foods, such as Big Mac, are the same all over the world. Other menu foods are specific to that area. Globalization has brought McDonald’s to billions of people worldwide.
But there are differences. First, the villagers don’t look the same. They have different skin colors and features.Because they are from different cultural groups, they often dress differently. In Japan, women wear kimonos (和服). But in China, many women like wearing the qipao, a type of dress. A country’s existence is dependent on its culture and traditions. Every country has its own customs. People around the world celebrate different festivals. People don’t always live in peace, either. There are wars and disagreement over land, water, energy and even ideas. That’s why people set up the United Nations (UN) to deal with these problems.
