Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don’t give friendship back. That is why some friendships don’t last very long.     1     You must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest; be generous (慷慨的); be understanding.

Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust one another. If you don’t tell the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out that you haven’t been honest, you may lose your friend’s trust.     2

Generosity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You don’t have to give your lunch money or your clothes, of course. Instead you have to learn how to share things you enjoy, your hobbies and interests. Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings.     3     They tell your friend what is important to you. By sharing them you help your friend know you better.

Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and help with a problem. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve.     4     So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend’s place so you can understand the problem better.

5     But all true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep your friendships, you must practice honesty, generosity and understanding.

A.No two friendships are ever exactly alike.
B.Good friends always trust one another to speak and act honestly.
C.To have a friend, you must learn to be one.
D.Turning to a friend can be a first step in solving the problem.
E.These can be valuable to a friend.

【推荐1】“Being honest may not get you a lot of friends, but it will get you the right ones.”     1       Here are three simple tips to help you be a real good friend.

1) Ask Questions

2     If your friendship has a history of welcome advice-giving, your question could be, “Are you looking for ideas, or do you just want me to listen?”

2)     3

“That’s so sad is sometimes the most good thing you can say to your friend when they are upset. Try to stop saying “It’s all going to work out, don’t worry” to show your friend that you see them in their pain, and that you are there to support them.     4     But, you can use “yes/and” sentences like, “It’s really sad to have this bad grade—and I know how hard you are working, that you’ll find the reason and move forward.”

3) Learn to Say Sorry—and Ask for an Apology

Friends misunderstand each other sometimes, which also includes you. Being real in a friendship means having the freedom to say to a friend, “I’m sorry I hurt you.” It also means being able to say, “your words/actions hurt me.”     5

What do your real friendships have in common?

A.Be with them When they are Sad
B.Tell the Truths and give them power.
C.That’s not to say you also need to be unhappy.
D.Friendships would always have room for mistakes, and for forgiveness.
E.Real good friends ask each other questions, and listen carefully to the answers.
F.You can encourage and support your friends and still tell the truth about hard things.
