Recently, we did a survey about our students’ ideas about what kinds of things are the most important in a friend. Here are the     1    .

We found that half of the students think a good friend should have the same hobbies     2     they do. Twenty percent hope their friends to be good listeners and can make them     3     when they’re sad. For another twenty percent, a good friend should be     4     talented in something than they are so that these friends can help bring out the best in     5    . The rest of the students like good-looking people with cool clothes to be their friends.

Last week, Mr. Zhang     3     a yard sale. What a kind man he is!

Wang Ping is a cleaner. He has cleaned a park for 5 years. He is also, a good father. Nothing can make him     1     than playing with his little daughter in his free time.

Last Tuesday afternoon, when he was cleaning the park, he heard a woman     2     for help. He ran up     3     to see what happened. The woman’s 15-month-old baby girl choked (窒息) on a small piece of pear and her face     4     purple. The baby was too young to save herself, and the mother was so     5     that she didn’t know how to save her daughter in a right way. Luckily, Wang Ping knew     6     to do. He took the baby in his arms at once. With the mother’s     7    , Wang Ping held the baby upside down and gave her a few pats (轻拍) on the back. After a few     8     , he got the piece of pear out of her mouth successfully and the baby began to cry. Her mom was so thankful (感激)     9     Wang Ping saved her daughter.

Wang Ping tried his best and saved the     10     life. In his mind, helping others is just helping himself. He hoped more people could help the people in need if possible.

What would it be like to be blind or deaf? Or imagine. You can’t walk or use your hands     3    . Most people would never think about this, but many people have these     4    . I can’t use my arms or legs well, so normal things like answering the telephone, opening and closing doors, or carrying things are difficult for me. Then one day last year, a friend of mine helped me out. She talked to Animal Helpers about getting me a     5     dog. She also     6     a dog might cheer me up. I love animals and I was     7     about the idea of having a dog. My life becomes more convenient because of your     8    .

The kids were playing in their backyard when a little cat tried to cross into their yard.     1    , it got stuck (卡住的) under the fence (篱笆). The kids tried to free the cat, but they     2     not. So they asked their mother to free the cat. The cat looked cute so the children begged (乞求) to keep it. Their mother said, “I don’t mind myself, and you must have a better     3     with your father.”

The kids waited anxiously (焦急地) for their dad back from work. “Do you think our dad will allow us to keep it?” the girl asked. Before the boy answered the girl, they heard that their father     4     the door. “Hi, daddy,” they both shouted loudly at the same time.

“You are surely     5     than usual to see me today. What’s up?” their father said.

“Nothing, daddy. We just love you so much,” the girl replied. Then their mother said, “Go ahead. Ask you dad.”

The girl asked her dad to keep the cat. The father said, “Sorry, because we     6     four cats now. Your mommy and I have no time to look after the     7     one.” Hearing this, the kids lowered (低下) their heads.

Seeing the sad looks on the     8     faces, the father changed his mind. “All right. Since you love it, you can keep it.” Hearing this, the kids happily screamed, “Hooray! Thank you, daddy!” However, the father added (补充说) they must promise to look after the cat by     9    . The kids were so happy to have five pet     10    . And the cat was lucky to have a home.

When I was 11, a terrible thing happened in the middle of one night. My home     1     caught fire. Luckily, we ran out and didn’t get hurt. But we had nothing, we felt     2    and helpless. We didn’t know if we could get through this by     3    .

The next day, my mom’s friend brought me a few T-shirts and pairs of jeans. One pair of jeans was too short     4     the other pair was too long, but I didn’t care. At least I had some clothes again. At the same time, my dad     5     to our home to see what he could salvage(抢救). The only thing he could find was my mom’s wedding ring, but it was     6     than nothing.

After several days, my dad     7     an old house by the side of the road near our old house. As we moved in, our family, friends and     8     in our community all came. I work in a cleaning company.     1     people call us, and we give them house cleaning service. One day, I got a call from a man     2     Jim. “I want to help an old man. He just had surgery (手术). Can I pay for it without     3     him know?” he asked. Then he explained to us why he was     4     about the old man. This old man is Jim’s neighbor, Mr. Brown. He lived alone and just came back from the hospital. There was still something wrong with his leg. His house was in     5     mess, but he couldn’t do any housework. Even folding the clothes was difficult for     6    . So Jim offered to help Mr. Brown and he said he didn’t want to bring the old man any     7    .

The next day, we went to Mr. Brown’s house.     8     we promised Jim not to tell his name, we didn’t tell too much to Mr. Brown. He was moved by the gift from someone he didn’t know. Sometimes we can’t depend     9     others, as we are afraid of making them get into trouble. However, there is always someone who     10     for you and tries his best to help you.
