1】Long, long ago, there lived an old man and his wife. Their only pet was a dog named Shiro. Indeed, they loved him so much that whenever they had something good to eat, they would give it to Shiro.

Next door to this good old couple lived an old man who was cruel (残酷的). Whenever Shiro happened to look into his kitchen, he at once kicked him or threw something at him.

One day Shiro was heard barking for a long time in the field at the back of his master’s house. The old man hurried out to see what had happened. As soon as Shiro saw his master, he ran to meet him and pulled on his coat and led him under a large tree. Here he began to dig with his paws.

The old man thought that something might be hidden beneath the tree. So he ran back to the house, took out his spade and began to dig the ground at that spot. After digging for some time, he saw some gold coins, and the deeper he dug, the more gold coins he found. At last, all the gold coins lay shining on the ground.

The old neighbour next door began to think that he, too, would find a fortune ( 财 富 ) if he had Shiro. So a few days later he went to the couple’s house to ask to borrow Shiro for a short time. The good old man was too kind-hearted to refuse his neighbour, so they agreed to lend him the dog. The old neighbour returned to his home. He then took his spade to his own field and stopped in front of a big tree.

He forced Shiro to dig and look for gold coins for him. The old man was very pleased when he saw the dog begin to scratch and dig. However, there was nothing to be found but a bad smell. At last, he found a rubbish heap (垃圾堆). Instead of blaming his own greed (贪婪) for his disappointment, the old neighbour blamed the poor dog. Finally, he killed Shiro in the place that he had dug,

【推荐2】Last summer, I didn’t want to go to school any more because I was disappointed(失望的)with my test scores. I found a job during my summer vacation. Since I didn’t have many work skills, the manager just asked me to send newspapers.

At the beginning, I thought that it would be a piece of cake. However, to my surprise, when I went to people’s houses, they started to look me up and down. I could feel that they looked down on me. I was deeply hurt and felt sad. Then I went to one house where a black dog jumped out at me. I was so afraid that I shouted, but no one came to my help. At that time, I realized that delivering(投递)newspapers was a lot more difficult than reading a book in a classroom. I thought about giving up, but I didn’t. I tried my best to do the job better. Although I was very tired, I got better at the job after some time.

From this experience, I have learned that if we put our heart into what we are doing, nothing is impossible.

Now, I am sitting in a classroom and working harder than ever before. But I trust myself and feel happier. As long as I don’t lose heart and work harder, I will make more progress.

“We should not be like this,” she said. “Instead, we should study hard to thank Mr. Thomas for being so good to us.” The class agreed, and they thought of an idea of having a farewell party for Mr. Thomas to surprise him.

On Mr. Thomas’ last day at school, everybody brought a different kind of delicious finger food to class and put it in the middle of the classroom. They covered the blackboard with farewell messages. When Mr. Thomas showed up, all the students said “Goodbye, dear teacher!” together and promised Mr. Thomas that they would do their best in schoolwork in the future.
