Early Monday morning, a powerful earthquake hit southern Turkey(土耳其) and northern Syria(叙利亚). The earthquake has destroyed thousands of buildings, killed more than 3,700 people, and left thousands more injured.
Aftershocks are usually smaller quakes that follow a large earthquake.
Thousands of rescue workers are now trying to find and save people who may be trapped in the earthquake. Turkey says it has sent out more than 9,600 rescue workers.
But rescue workers are facing many challenges. The earthquake and its aftershocks have damaged roads.
The weather is also causing problems. Before the earthquake, the area was preparing for a heavy snow storm. Now, snow and rain are making rescue efforts more difficult. In northwest Syria, things are even more challenging.
Many of the people there already lived in tents or in special camps for people who lost their homes in the war. Because of the war, it will be difficult to get help to those in this part of Syria who need it.
A.Many countries are sending teams of rescue workers and supplies to the area to help out. |
B.But in this case, many of the aftershocks have also been very strong. |
C.At least four hospitals in the area were damaged by the earthquake. |
D.Turkey’s government has asked people to keep the roads clear for rescue workers. |
E.More than half of the 4.6 million people who live in the area have trouble getting enough food. |

Luckily, there’s a new way to do it now. A Dutch group made a special bag. It has a camera and a two-way microphone. They train (训练) African giant pouched rats (非洲巨颊囊鼠) and wear the bag on their backs, and then the rats can look for people in the rubble with the backpack.
The idea is that the rats can get into small places. When the rat is searching a place with the bag, human rescuers can watch a live feed (现场直播). The live feed lets rescuers see if someone needs help.
Donna Kean is working on the project. She says that rats are perfect for the job because they are usually interested in new things, and they like to run everywhere. Together with the bag and the training, the rats are very useful for search and rescue.

The National Climatic Data Center also says high temperatures in June added to the warmest twelve-month period on record. Record-keeping began in 1895. The drought map showed that conditions improved in the Southeast in June compared to May. But the drought is expected to continue in large parts of the country. Last week, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack met with President Obama. Mr Vilsack says the drought has seriously influenced some crops, such as corn and soybeans (大豆). And the United States is the world's leading producer.
The drought has made prices of com and soybeans increase. Both of them are used in food production and for animal feed. Last week the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization reported that corn and wheat prices increased by 20% over the past three weeks.
In the United States, farmers may quickly reduce the size of their animals rather than pay higher feed prices to keep them. That increased supply of meat would reduce meat prices in the short term. But those prices could increase in several months.
Mr Vilsack says the effect of the drought is hard to predict(预测). Some areas are getting rain, and drought-resistant (抗旱的) seeds have helped crops grow well in some areas.
