1 . My friend helped me celebrate my 31st birthday in a basement (地下室), where I lived. Then, I finally climbed into bed at 1:20 in the morning.
Earlier in the day, I was preparing for the possible flood. We were living near the Ahr River. It went on raining heavily that week and the government sent out a flood warning, although it was not for where I was. However, I put sand bags on the floor outside my garden door. “Silly brother!” My friends laughed at me for doing that. But I thought, why take a chance?
As I was sleeping, I was woken by the sound of rushing water. It sounded like lying beside a waterfall. When I got off the bed, I was shocked that cold water was rising fast. In darkness, I picked up my cellphone and turned on the flashlight. When I got out of the bedroom, I saw water shooting through the bottom of the door.
I began to feel afraid. I knew I had to get out-fast! Without shoes, I started to make my way to the only escape: the door that led upstairs to the main floor. Finally I made it to the door and tried several times to pull it open even just a little bit, but the rushing water shut it again. I looked around for anything I could use to keep it open. There was a stick in the corner. I took it and, once again, opened the door, throwing it between the door and the frame (门框) to keep the door open. Finally, I managed to go through and make it into the living room.
I jumped onto the stairs and ran outside. I stood there in the darkness, wet through. The street was once lovely full of people and cars, but now it was like a water pool with floating things. The river had drowned the neighbourhood!
I couldn’t help thinking: What would happen if I hadn’t done any preparations? I might have lost my life! Never take a chance and always be prepared!

3 . It happened today, which we never want to happen, but we’ve been preparing for it for a whole school year. A tornado touched down (登陆) near our school.
I wasn’t even in the classroom at the moment. I had taken a student with me to the workroom to help gather something for a test. When the emergency alarms went off, immediately I grabbed my student’s hand and ran as fast as I could back to the classroom.
I never imagined needing to put our tornado practice into use. I never imagined actually needing to line my students up against the wall and have them crouch down (蹲伏) with their knees and heads touching the ground, hands on the backs of their heads. Their hearts beat so fast that they couldn’t catch their breath. Their fear-filled eyes looked up at me as they asked if their parents, grandparents and friends were going to be fine. Never could I imagine that the silence would come over the whole schoolyard, with hundreds of students gathered in the classrooms of one building.
Other teachers and I tried our best to comfort our students, assure (使确信) them of their safety and promise them everything would be all right, though we truly didn’t know what the result would be.
Today has done something bad to me, and I am sure it has done harm to the hundreds and thousands of teachers in the local areas and surrounding areas. But at the same time, I am very proud, surprised and pleased with how my students behaved. Never have I seen they follow directions so quickly and quietly. Even though tears were in eyes and hearts were beating fast, my students were brave beyond their age today. They were able to be 100% calm and collected (镇静的) the whole time and for that, I was greatly moved.

B.Because the parents worked well with the school all the time. |
C.Because the students were brave and well-organized during the tornado. |
D.Because hundreds of students lined up against the walls of one building. |
A.A horrible tornado hit the school. |
B.The school was in a mess after the tornado. |

Until the beginning of July, there has been no rain in northern Italy for over 100 days. Add to that the high temperatures, and the locals get very dry conditions. This is the most serious dry spell (干旱期) for that area in the past 70 years. Because of this situation, the country’s longest river, the Po River is drying up!
This is bad news for several different reasons. The fresh water of the Po provides drinking water for northern Italy. Besides, farmers in this area need the water of the Po to keep their crops growing. What’s more, the flowing river water is used to create about half of the hydroelectric power (水力发电) for Italy. Its drying up means that more natural gas (天然气) will be used, which is bad for the environment.
There have been some interesting discoveries from this lack of rain, however. Between Florence and Milan, a long ship sunk (沉没) in 1943 appeared because of the low water levels of the river. Now many tourists and locals come to see this ship. A German tank has also appeared out of water near Mantua. At other places along the river, people can even walk on the sandy river bed. Although this may be interesting, people in Italy and around the world are hoping for the return of rain to refill the Po!
