TAIPEI/BEIJTNG—A 7.3-magnitude (震级) earthquake shook the sea area near Hualien in China’s Taiwan on Wednesday.

The earthquake hit at 7:58 am and strong shakes were felt across Taiwan. Xinhua reporters in Taipei experienced serious shakes as their apartment building shook without stopping for over a minute. Lifts in the apartment building were stopped from operation.

Many buildings in Hualien partially (部分) fell down and hundreds of people had to leave their homes. Falling rocks were also reported in mountain areas. The earthquake has resulted in 13 deaths and over 1,000 injuries (伤) so far and six people are still missing. Many aftershocks above 5.0 magnitude hit Hualien and nearby areas.

90% of Earth’s earthquakes happen within the Pacific Ring of Fire and Taiwan lies right along this Ring of Fire. In September 2019, a forest fire broke out in northern New South Wales in Australia. This fire lasted for more than four months. According to the news, it destroyed more than 2,000 houses and about 500 million animals have been killed. So far 26 people have died in this terrible fire. The news also shows that the smoke from the fire quickly spreads across the whole world.

Why did the fire break out? The windy, dry and hot weather was one of the reasons for it. But another one was human activities. For example, people have thrown cigarette ends in forests. They failed to follow the ban(禁令) and cooked food in the forest.

Actually, the fire and other fires throughout Australia are warnings from nature. They are not only for Australia, but also for the people in different countries in the world. They are supposed to draw people’s attention to environmental protection.

Now, many countries are trying their best to help protect the environment. For example, Shanghai of China introduced compulsory(强制性的) rules about sorting rubbish in 2019. What should you do if a big fire happens at home? There is no much time to think. People need to act quickly. The following rules will be helpful:

Shout out

If you smell smoke or see fire, shout out “fire”! Shout as loudly as you can, because people may be asleep at night.

Call 119

Never try to put out a fire yourself, even if it is a very small one! Get help from your parents or call 119.

Keep down close to the floor

If there is a lot of smoke in your room, keep down close to the floor. There is less smoke down there. It is easier to breathe and see where you are going. Take a wet towel to cover your mouth and nose with it. And it can protect you from the smoke and fire.

Check the door

Check the door before you open it. Touch it with the back of your hand. If the door is cool, open it carefully. If the door is hot, do not open it.

Get out

If you can, get out of your home as quickly as you can. Do not stop to pick up anything. A fire can become very big in a few seconds!

Don’t use the lift

Never use the lift during a fire. Always use the stairs. A lift may stop at a floor where the fire is burning. It may also go wrong and keep you inside.

Don’t go back

Never go back into a building on fire! Even if you have left your pet or favorite toy inside, do not go back for it.

In China, safety education is becoming more and more important. Stampedes(蜂拥), earthquakes and fires are three serious accidents at school. Students need to learn about how to keep themselves safe at school.

Stampedes often happen in crowded places. When the people begin to push you, you should stand there and hold something, If you fall down in these crowed places, you should protect your head with your hands.

Earthquakes always happen suddenly. If you are inside a building, you can hide under a table or a chair, because it will protect you from being hurt by the falling things. If you are outside a building, you should find an open place and stay away from buildings and trees.

When there’s a fire, leave the classroom as soon as possible. While leaving the classroom you’d better put something wet over your mouth and noses. In this way, you won’t take in the smoke. In fact, many people die in a fire because of the smoke. The smoke is full of CO₂ and that makes it difficult for people to breathe. So you should make yourself close to the floor and try to get out quickly. Then you will be safe and you can breathe the fresh air.

Schools across Arkansas joined in the Great Shake Out Day on Thursday, Oct. 21. It’s an earthquake drill(演练)to improve students’ knowledge and provide education on what to do if an earthquake hits.

Pam Dial, a headteacher, said they like to take part in this drill to be a part of something bigger than themselves.

“I think it makes the kids and teachers excited and it makes me feel excited to be a part of something that’s bigger than just our small school,” she said.

Students had to stop their classwork at 10: 21 a.m. that day when warnings through the speaker saying, “This is an earthquake drill. At this time, we need students to drop, cover and hold. Drop, cover, and hold.” This doesn’t come as a shock, according to Dial, because they’ve taken part in the drill for the past three years.

“I usually share the website with teachers and it just gives them ideas for how to explain it to kids. It also teaches students how to drop, cover and hold so that they will protect their heads and their backs,” she said.

“Drop, cover and hold” are three simple but important steps according to a geologist, Scott Ausbrook, since Arkansas is along an earthquake belt, and earthquakes are an unexpected disaster. “Earthquakes can happen at any time. The state has already had 34 earthquakes this year. While only 10% of those are actually felt by people, education is key for their safety,” he said.
