Schools across Arkansas joined in the Great Shake Out Day on Thursday, Oct. 21. It’s an earthquake drill(演练)to improve students’ knowledge and provide education on what to do if an earthquake hits.
Pam Dial, a headteacher, said they like to take part in this drill to be a part of something bigger than themselves.
“I think it makes the kids and teachers excited and it makes me feel excited to be a part of something that’s bigger than just our small school,” she said.
Students had to stop their classwork at 10: 21 a.m. that day when warnings through the speaker saying, “This is an earthquake drill. At this time, we need students to drop, cover and hold. Drop, cover, and hold.” This doesn’t come as a shock, according to Dial, because they’ve taken part in the drill for the past three years.
“I usually share the website with teachers and it just gives them ideas for how to explain it to kids. It also teaches students how to drop, cover and hold so that they will protect their heads and their backs,” she said.
“Drop, cover and hold” are three simple but important steps according to a geologist, Scott Ausbrook, since Arkansas is along an earthquake belt, and earthquakes are an unexpected disaster. “Earthquakes can happen at any time. The state has already had 34 earthquakes this year. While only 10% of those are actually felt by people, education is key for their safety,” he said.

Salina is a student in Sunshine Middle School. She feels happy most of the time at school. But she also feels unhappy from time to time because there are too many rules at her school. She agrees with some of the rules. For example, they can’t arrive late for school, they can’t run in the classroom building, and they can’t eat in the classroom. All these rules are okay because they’re reasonable(合情合理的). But there are some rules Salina doesn’t agree with. For example, at her school, they have to wear uniforms and they can’t wear jeans. They can’t listen to music in art classes. And they have to take five classes in the morning. But Salina likes jeans and she thinks they’re comfortable. She thinks it is okay to listen to music in art classes. She thinks it’s too much to have 5 classes in the morning. It’s 12 o’clock when classes are over, after all. She feels so hungry. Rob Frenette has suffered from bullying (欺凌) at school for eleven years. He was often lonely and afraid at school.
After a long time of suffering from sadness and pain, he decided to say goodbye to his past life and do something about his problems. When he was fifteen, he walked into a newspaper office and told them about the bullying. His story went into the newspaper and soon all the TV stations in Canada wanted to talk with him about his experiences.
After that, Rob continued his studies at school, but in his free time, he helped other people with bullying problems. With his friend Katie, he made a website called www.bullyingcanada.ca. Visitors to the website can find advice, stories and poems about bullying. When people are upset, they can talk online to Rob and his team. Every weekend, Rob has to answer e-mails to the website. He also speaks to children, teachers and members of government around the country about bullying. Rob’s most important message is: “When bullying happens to you, it isn’t your fault (过错). So you should try to keep trusting yourself. And remember that people care about your problems.”
One of Rob’s ideas is “Blue Day”, a special day for stopping bullying in schools. Students have to wear blue clothes in class, and learn how to stop bullying. More than 150 Canadian schools celebrate Blue Day now. However, Rob won’t stop until there’s a Blue Day in every school in Canada.

How to Protect Ourselves in School Bullying
Dear classmates,Recently, the problem of school bullying has been brought into focus.
On October 28, 2018, a serious traffic accident happened in Wanzhou District, Chongqing. A bus and a red car collided (碰撞) at the second bridge of the Yangtze River. The bus ran out of control on the bridge and crashed into the river. All 15 passengers and the driver in the bus were killed.
After hearing the bad news, many people doubted (怀疑) the red car was going the wrong way, causing the bus to fall into the river. A few days later, based on (以……为基准) the black box saved from the scene of the accident (事故现场), together with the traffic records, the police found out the truth. Before the bus reached the bridge, a female passenger had a quarrel (争执) with the bus driver because she missed her station, but the driver refused to stop the bus. So they got into a fight. Because the speed was very high, the bus was out of control.
People from all walks of life paid more attention to the accident and expressed their opinion. Some people think the woman passenger made the trouble without reason. She was regarded as the chief culprit (罪魁祸首). She shouldn’t argue with the driver. Some people think the driver shouldn’t fight with passengers and they should keep calm and put the passengers’ safety first at any time. As for the other passengers, they failed to stop them in time. Maybe they didn’t know the result would be so serious.
Nowadays, hundreds of people die or get hurt on the roads every year in China. In my opinion, all of us should follow the rules and put the safety in our hearts.

3. What was saved from the scene of the accident?
