Every month, Li ling dresses herself in her favorite hanfu and goes to a party with her friends. At the party, they sing traditional songs and play traditional Chinese music.
Like Li, more and more young people are interested in China Chic, or guochao. It became popular in 2018 after the brand LI-NING showed its Chinese-style designs (款式) at New York Fashion Week. Now, we can see guochao elements (元素) everywhere in our everyday life, from clothing and makeup (化妆品) to food.
An expert talks about the reason behind it, “Now young people know the world well through the Internet and they also want to show who they are.” At the same time, they also want more people to accept traditional Chinese culture and love it. Pop culture artist Yu Yang is one of them. He spends most of his time designing Chinese-style jackets, cars and shoes. He hopes more people will know about Chinese culture through his art pieces. Yu feels lucky because so many young people love guochao and his works.
1. How often do Li ling and her friends have the party?2. When did guochao become popular?
3. Where can we see guochao elements in our life?
4. What does Yu Yang spend most of his time doing?
5. Why does Yu Yang feel lucky?

Anna wants to become a top guitarist in the future. She began to play the guitar two years ago when she saw her father play it at home. “I love the guitar, so I always play it at home. When I found she was also interested in it, I began to teach her,” said her father. Soon Anna was good at playing it. Then she began to take guitar lessons in Band School once a week, every Saturday. She learned more from musicians there. Anna studied very hard at Band School. She could play the guitar very well, so she was able to take part in the school’s music concert. Anna was the youngest player. Most students felt nervous when they took part in the concert for the first time, but Anna didn’t. She was very relaxed, and she gave a really fantastic performance. Many people see her performance online, and Anna is becoming famous in her town now. “Boys usually take up the guitar, but very few girls choose it. Dr Maria Sherman talked to students about an astronaut’s life in space at the Space Museum on Wednesday.
Every morning you get up, wash your face, brush your teeth and have breakfast. These actions are so common that you don’t think about them much. But what if you were in space? There is no gravity(重力)there, so things are not as heavy as they are on Earth. When you drop something, it doesn’t fall to the floor. So how do astronauts drink in space?
Well, astronauts eat and drink differently in space. They have special plates so that their food doesn’t fly away. They use special bags for drinks so that the drinks stay inside.
Sleep is also different in space. Astronauts tie(绑)themselves to the wall so that they don’t fly around when they are sleeping. The sun rises and sets very often. The astronauts have alarm clocks to wake themselves up.
Exercise is important for astronauts as well. Since there is no gravity, astronauts’ muscles become weak very quickly. They have to exercise on special machines every day to prevent this from happening.
However, it is not all hard work in space. When they are not doing science experiments, writing reports or exercising, there is a little time for fun. They watch movies and read the news.
1. Why are things lighter in space than they are on Earth?2. What will happen to the food if astronauts don’t eat it on special plates?
3. Where do astronauts sleep?
4. How do astronauts train their muscles?
5. What do astronauts do for fun?

We sometimes see young people in Han Clothing taking photos in the park. While showing their own beauty, they show the clothes as well. Every country has its own traditional clothing. I believe Han Clothing is a part of Chinese culture. But as the modern world develops, people now wear fashionable clothes like jackets, T-shirts and jeans. That’s why I’m so happy and proud to see more people begin to wear Han Clothing. They are actually inheriting (继承) our traditional culture.
Zeng Yijie,13
Wearing Han Clothing seems to be a new fashion. I think Han Clothing is beautiful and elegant. Many people who wear it on the street look like they’re coming out of ancient paintings. Not everyone who wears Han Clothing is a true fan. For example, some wear Han Clothing in parks only to focus on taking photos. Some compare the clothes with others’ and even argue about the prices of the clothing. I think what they should do is to respect the traditional clothing culture of China, not just show their own beauty under Han Clothing.
Zhao Dingyi, 14
Although Han Clothing is brightly colored, well-cut and beautiful in shape, its cost should be lower. The cost of wearing Han Clothing is a little bit too high now, which puts pressure on people. I have heard that 1000 Yuan can only buy a medium-priced Han Clothing. Some brands even produce limited-edition (限量版) suits. These are very expensive. If the price is lower, more people will afford it. In this way, traditional clothing culture will be more popular.
Zhou Ziqin, 13
1. What kinds of clothes do the people in modern world wear?2. Why is Zeng Yijie happy and proud to see more people begin to wear Han Clothing?
3. How old is Zhao Dingyi?
4. What do some people wearing Han Clothing in park focus on?

These days, we can see more and more people wearing Han clothing in the street. For me,
Why do we use “shang cesuo” to mean “go to the bathroom” and “xia chufang” to mean “go to the kitchen”?
In ancient times, houses were laid out (安排) in a certain way. The door of the home would face south, with the bathroom located in the northeastern part of the house and the kitchen located in the southeastern part.
On maps, north is usually at the top of the map, while south is at the bottom. In Chinese, we say “上北下南” to refer to the north as shang (upper) and the south as xia (lower). So people would say they were going “up” to the bathroom and “down” to the kitchen because of their location.
Ancient Chinese not only used shang and xia to refer to directions, but also social status (地位). Shang was seen to be noble (尊贵的), while xia stood for humility (谦卑). For example, people used huangshang to refer to the emperor and dianxia to refer to princes who had lower status than the emperor.
What does this have to do with the bathroom and kitchen? In the past, men were seen as the “noble” workers of the family, while women were “humble (卑微的)” homemakers. Since women worked in the kitchen, the “humble” character xia was used to refer to the room.
But those associations (关联) in meaning have been lost over time.

The Hanfu, Zhongshan suit (Mao suit), Tang suit, and cheongsam (qipao) are the four most distinctive types of traditional Chinese clothing.
1. Hanfu—The Most Traditional Chinese Clothing
The Hanfu is the oldest of China’s traditional clothes. Legend can date back to over 4000 years ago. Nowadays, people seldom wear Hanfu except on special occasions(场合), such as festivals and wedding ceremonies, or by young girls who want to show off or taking photos.
2. Qipao(Cheongsam)—the Most Famous Traditional Chinese Dress
Originating in the Qing Dynasty, the cheongsam has mainly developed into Beijing styles, Shanghai styles and Hong Kong styles. There are many differences in decorations, colors, materials, and designs.
3. Tang Suit
Traditional Tang suits, based on the magua of the Manchu ethnicity, usually have Chinese characters on them to express good luck or best wishes. The most popular characters include fu and shou.
4. The Zhongshan Suit—Traditional Formal Attire for Men
The Zhongshan suit, also known as the Mao suit overseas, is a type of men’s jacket. The design of Zhongshan suits combines(结合) traditional Chinese and Western clothing styles. Zhongshan suits have four big pockets on the front, two up two down, equally spaced left and right.

September 1st is the perfect day to pick up a pen and paper and write a letter to someone because it’s World Letter Writing Day. The holiday is created to keep the art of letter writing alive in our digital age (数字时代).
For a long time, letter writing was the primary means of long-distance communication. However, the appearance of modern means of communication, such as e-mails and text messages, has made letter writing a less popular activity. Few people would like to take the time to sit down and write a letter.
Even though the new technologies have provided us with much faster ways to communicate, letter writing is still important for a number of reasons. Writing a letter to someone shows them that you really care about them, because you took the time and effort to do something people seldom do these days. Handwriting is also an important skill you shouldn’t lose, because writing by hand stimulates (刺激) your brain in a different way than typing and improves your language processing and reading skills. Another reason is that writing a letter forces you to really think about what you’re writing. Far too often, we hurriedly send texts and e-mails without really thinking about the influence our words have on the receiver. With a handwritten letter, you are forced to be more careful with the words you choose.
So, how do we celebrate this day? The best way is to write a letter to someone. It could be a friend or relative who lives miles away, or someone you have lost touch with over time. Of course, you can also just read some famous letters. Whatever you do, please know that letter writing is still worthwhile.
1. When is World Letter Writing Day?2. What are the reasons for writing letters by hand?
3. How can we celebrate World Letter Writing Day?
4. Can writing by hand stimulate the brain the same way as typing?
5. If you could write a letter, who would you write it to? And why?

How to Pass Down Chinese Culture
【推荐2】There are many things we can learn from nature. For example, the bamboo tree seems to have no changes for the first four years, but in the fifth year, the bamboo tree grows to 80 feet tall in just short six weeks. What does it tell us?
Success (成功) doesn’t come right away. As the saying goes, “Rome was not built in a day.” Do you exercise for one day and hope to lose all the fat on your body? Not at all, you don’t hope that, right? So give your goals and dreams more time. Work on them step by step and it takes time to get them.
Success needs a strong foundation (基础). The bamboo tree could never grow to 80 feet tall if it did not grow its root deep into the ground in the first few years. Spend time building a strong foundation. This is very important if your goals and dreams are too big.
Success is about your keeping on. Without daily watering, nurturing (养育) and giving enough sunshine to the bamboo tree, it can never grow. It will never experience full growth, and you may even kill the bamboo. Some people think about the dreams and work on them in the beginning, but at last, they lose patience and never take action for their dreams again.
Believe in yourself and your dreams certainly. Another important lesson you must learn from the bamboo tree is that you need to believe in yourself and your dreams certainly. Of course, this does not mean that you should just believe, wait and do nothing about them. At the same time you should work on them. A lot of people fail to do this when they put in their heart and time but never get to see the results.
回答下面5个问题,每题答案不超过6个词。
1. When does a bamboo tree grow fast?
2. What may the underlined word “goals” mean in Chinese?
3. What’s important if your dreams are too big?
4. What should you do when you put your heart and time on your dream?
5. What else did you learn from nature?
