TAIPEI/BEIJTNG—A 7.3 magnitude (震级) earthquake shook the sea area near Hualien in China’s Taiwan on Wednesday.
The earthquake hit at 7:58 a.m. and strong shakes were felt across Taiwan. Xinhua reporters in Taipei experienced serious shakes as their apartment building shook without stopping for over a minute. Lifts in the apartment building were stopped from operation.
Many buildings in Hualien partially (部分) fell down and hundreds of people had to leave their homes. Falling rocks were also reported in mountain areas. The earthquake has resulted in 13 deaths and over 1,000 injuries (伤) so far and six people are still missing. Many aftershocks above 5.0 magnitude hit Hualien and nearby areas.

Since it took place at midnight, its results were very serious—2,400 deaths and around 100,000 injuries.
The earthquake was also felt in Shanghai and many provinces along China’s southeastern coast, including Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Fujian and Guangdong. People in Shantou also felt the shakes when the earthquake took place.

In China, safety education is becoming more and more important. Stampedes(蜂拥), earthquakes and fires are three serious accidents at school. Students need to learn about how to keep themselves safe at school.
Stampedes often happen in crowded places. When the people begin to push you, you should stand there and hold something, If you fall down in these crowed places, you should protect your head with your hands.
Earthquakes always happen suddenly. If you are inside a building, you can hide under a table or a chair, because it will protect you from being hurt by the falling things. If you are outside a building, you should find an open place and stay away from buildings and trees.
When there’s a fire, leave the classroom as soon as possible. While leaving the classroom you’d better put something wet over your mouth and noses. In this way, you won’t take in the smoke. In fact, many people die in a fire because of the smoke. The smoke is full of CO₂ and that makes it difficult for people to breathe. So you should make yourself close to the floor and try to get out quickly. Then you will be safe and you can breathe the fresh air.

The news also shows that the smoke from the fire quickly spreads across the whole world.

What should you do if a big fire happens at home? There is no much time to think. People need to act quickly. The following rules will be helpful:
Shout out
If you smell smoke or see fire, shout out “fire”! Shout as loudly as you can, because people may be asleep at night.
Call 119
Never try to put out a fire yourself, even if it is a very small one! Get help from your parents or call 119.
Keep down close to the floor
If there is a lot of smoke in your room, keep down close to the floor. There is less smoke down there. It is easier to breathe and see where you are going. Take a wet towel to cover your mouth and nose with it. And it can protect you from the smoke and fire.
Check the door
Check the door before you open it. Touch it with the back of your hand. If the door is cool, open it carefully. If the door is hot, do not open it.
Get out
If you can, get out of your home as quickly as you can. Do not stop to pick up anything. A fire can become very big in a few seconds!
Don’t use the lift
Never use the lift during a fire. Always use the stairs. A lift may stop at a floor where the fire is burning. It may also go wrong and keep you inside.
Don’t go back
Never go back into a building on fire! Even if you have left your pet or favorite toy inside, do not go back for it.
1. How many rules are talked about in the passage?2. Why should you shout as loudly as you can?
3. Can you try to put out a fire yourself if it is a very small one?
4. What can you take to protect yourself from the smoke and fire?

I couldn’t ski, so I just ran in the snow, made balls and took photos. I did not feel very cold because I wore a thick coat. And playing kept me warm. My shoes were wet, but it was nothing to me. We spent the whole (整个的) day in the park. I had a lot of fun.

I’m Montano. My parents always told me that I couldn’t dance, because it was a girl’s sport. But I never gave up my interest and I really wanted to become a dancing star. One summer, my little sister Mary was going to have dance lessons. Luckily, I was asked to take her to the lessons. Luckily, I was asked to take her to the lessons. What a good chance to learn dancing! One day, Mary asked me to dance with her in the school dancing competition, because none of the boys in her class would like to do that. They thought she was slow. “You can be a good dancer!” I encouraged her. “Let’s show those people that they are wrong!” In the following months, we practised every evening, still hiding from our parents.
Finally, a big day came. I become nervous when I saw my parents watching the competition. But as the music began, I took a deep breath(深呼吸) and tried to put my heart into the dance. We moved perfectly, shining with pride. From the cheering of the crowd, I was sure we had done a good job. When we got off the stage(舞台), my father came towards me. He put his hand on my shoulder. “Well done, son. I have to say you are born to dance. Go for it and make us proud of you.”

Eyes always on us
Video cameras are everywhere: schools, theaters and stores. But in recent years, they have entered our homes. Many parents set up cameras at home to watch their children’s online classes and homework. Are cameras really helpful? What do students think about it?
Li Ming Earlier last year, I liked to lie in bed and watch videos instead of studying. This affected my studies and made my grades worse. So my parents set up a camera to keep an eye on me. It worked. With the camera watching, I had to do my homework first and make plans for studying at home. When I was alone at home, the camera made me feel safe because I knew that my parents were watching on the other side. My grades improved after a year. Zhang Hua When I was in Grade 8, my parents set up a camera in my room. I really didn’t like it because I felt like there were always eyes watching me. I was so uncomfortable that I couldn’t sleep well at night. Knowing there was a camera around when my friends came to my home, they would speak quietly and carefully. We couldn’t have pillow fights. I was sad. So I asked my parents to take the camera away. They agreed it as long as I promised to behave well... I feel happy and free now. |

3. What happened to Li Ming one year later?
4. How did Zhang Hua feel like after the camera was set up at home?

Dear Li Hua,
How are you doing? I flew back to London last Friday. I really had a good time in Tokyo with my sister Lucy. We visited many places of interest and tried lots of delicious Japanese food. When we had dinner at a famous restaurant in Tokyo, we made a mistake. In England, we tip (给小费) when the service is good, or when we like the person who is providing that service. So we gave a kind-hearted waiter a tip when we paid the bill (账单) because he provided us with good service. To our surprise, he was a little angry. After knowing that in Japan tipping was actually considered to be impolite, we explained the culture of tipping in our country and said sorry to him.
You know, I’m interested in Chinese customs. I will fly to Beijing next month. So I want to ask you about how to behave properly when a Chinese friend invites me to his house for dinner.
First, should I arrive at his house on time? Second, am I supposed to bring any gifts? Last, after dinner, can I stay for a while or should I leave his house at once? I’m sure your advice will be of great help.
Looking forward to your reply!
Yours,
Andy
