Dear Li Hua,
How are you doing? I flew back to London last Friday. I really had a good time in Tokyo with my sister Lucy. We visited many places of interest and tried lots of delicious Japanese food. When we had dinner at a famous restaurant in Tokyo, we made a mistake. In England, we tip (给小费) when the service is good, or when we like the person who is providing that service. So we gave a kind-hearted waiter a tip when we paid the bill (账单) because he provided us with good service. To our surprise, he was a little angry. After knowing that in Japan tipping was actually considered to be impolite, we explained the culture of tipping in our country and said sorry to him.
You know, I’m interested in Chinese customs. I will fly to Beijing next month. So I want to ask you about how to behave properly when a Chinese friend invites me to his house for dinner.
First, should I arrive at his house on time? Second, am I supposed to bring any gifts? Last, after dinner, can I stay for a while or should I leave his house at once? I’m sure your advice will be of great help.
Looking forward to your reply!
Yours,
Andy

Almost all cultures celebrate the end of one year and the beginning of another in some ways. Different cultures celebrate the beginning of a new year in different ways at different times on the calendar.
In Western countries, people usually celebrate New Year from midnight on December 31st to January 1st. People may go to parties, sometimes dressed in formal(正式的) clothes, and they may drink champagne(香槟) at midnight. During the first minute of the new year, people cheer and wish each other happiness for the year ahead. But some cultures prefer to celebrate the new year by waking up early to watch the sunrise. They welcome the new year with the first light of the sunrise.
Many cultures also do special things to get rid of(摆脱) bad luck at the beginning of a new year. For example,in Ecuador, families make a big doll from old clothes. The doll is filled with old newspapers and firecrackers. At midnight, these dolls are burned to show the bad things from the past year have gone and that the new year can start a fresh(重新). Other common traditions to keep away bad luck in a new year include throwing things into rivers or the ocean,or saying special things on the first day of the new year.
Other New Year traditions are followed to bring good luck in the new year. One widespread Spanish tradition for good luck is to eat grapes on New Year’s Day. The more grapes a person eats, the more good luck he will have in the new year. In France, people eat pancakes for good luck on New Year’s Day. In the United States, some people eat black-eyed peas for good luck—but to get good luck for a whole year. You have to eat 365 of them!

I will go on holiday in June. Helen and I are going to Italy. We’re staying with Francesca in Turin for two weeks. Would you and Debbie like to come? Francesca says her house is very big. If you’d like to join us, could you call me or write to me? I hope you can come.

Dear Alisa,
You are a wonderful person and your mother and I love you. It will not be long before you leave school to make your way in the world. Can I give you some friendly advice? Here are some things that you should never do.
Never get upset with your look
We think you look great. Please be happy with the person you are and the body you have. Eat well, take exercise and be healthy. Some girls worry too much about not getting the perfect shape. You look fine.
Never put yourself at serious risk
You cannot trust other people until you really know them. And sometimes you have to avoid things that look like they might be fun, like smoking.
Never look down upon yourself
You are great and able to achieve great things, so believe in yourself. When things go badly, never stop believing. Some girls get upset.
Never give less than your best
We are very proud of what you have achieved. You should be proud, too. Keep trying your best at everything you do.
Never forget that your parents love you
Whatever happens in life, your family will still be your family. Whatever difficulties you have, you can always talk to your parents. We are here for you and we will try to help you.

Dad

Dear Amanda,
Your parents sound very strict. It’s hard to believe that your mom chooses what you wear. Are you a Barbie doll?
Try to take the first step when possible. Dress yourself before your mother has a chance to come in and choose your clothes. If she asks you to change, tell her you’ll be late for school.
You should also talk to her. Ask about her choices: What makes a set of clothes acceptable or unacceptable? Tell her you will follow her rules, but you want to make the choices. You are not in the first grade. You are a young lady in high school.
As for your father, it’s difficult to argue with his mind. After all, he is not totally wrong. How strict is he? Does he lock you up with your textbooks? Are you allowed to have a hobby? Are you allowed to have a smartphone? Are you allowed to hang out with friends?
Such strict parents should know the law of diminishing returns(收益递减). A weightlifter, for example, can only lift for an hour or two each day. If she does more, her muscles will not become stronger. She will just get tired. She may even hurt herself!
Our brains also have limits(限度). Some violin teachers say you should only practice a new skill for 15 minutes each day because our brains need to relax and understand new information. Our brains also have a basic need to socialize(社交). Ask your father: what is the meaning of so much studying if it makes you feel unhappy?
Stay strong.

Healthy eating habits along with regular exercise is the only way to become fit. If we have the correct number of calories (卡路里) and exercise regularly, we will lose weight, keep fit and feel great, too.
During teenage years, it is important to give our body the energy (能量) it needs. If we don’t eat meals, we won’t get enough calories, and then we will feel tired. By the way, calorie is just another word for energy. About 50% of our calories should come from rice, bread, vegetables and fruit. We also need to drink a lot of water, 6 to 8 glasses a day. Drinking enough water will make our skin better and keep us healthy.
Exercise is something that can help to make us look good, feel good and be healthy. Experts (专家) suggest that teenagers should spend at least 30 minutes exercising a day, five times a week. That’s easy to do! They can walk or ride our bike to school, and do sports at school. However, some teenagers often give up sports, saying they have no time left after their studies. In fact, doing exercise can help them sleep better at night and increase their ability to focus on their study.
