Dear Amanda,
Your parents sound very strict. It’s hard to believe that your mom chooses what you wear. Are you a Barbie doll?
Try to take the first step when possible. Dress yourself before your mother has a chance to come in and choose your clothes. If she asks you to change, tell her you’ll be late for school.
You should also talk to her. Ask about her choices: What makes a set of clothes acceptable or unacceptable? Tell her you will follow her rules, but you want to make the choices. You are not in the first grade. You are a young lady in high school.
As for your father, it’s difficult to argue with his mind. After all, he is not totally wrong. How strict is he? Does he lock you up with your textbooks? Are you allowed to have a hobby? Are you allowed to have a smartphone? Are you allowed to hang out with friends?
Such strict parents should know the law of diminishing returns(收益递减). A weightlifter, for example, can only lift for an hour or two each day. If she does more, her muscles will not become stronger. She will just get tired. She may even hurt herself!
Our brains also have limits(限度). Some violin teachers say you should only practice a new skill for 15 minutes each day because our brains need to relax and understand new information. Our brains also have a basic need to socialize(社交). Ask your father: what is the meaning of so much studying if it makes you feel unhappy?
Stay strong.

When you’re struggling to finish a task at work, throwing on some Bach or Beethoven may worth a try. That’s the main conclusion of an experiment on several British workers that found listening to classical music at work can improve productivity by 15%.
An initial(初步的) survey of 2, 000 UK employees said that half of them listen to music on the job. Some of those employees’ bosses reportedly encouraged the practice, but others were strictly against it, believing it might hurt work performance. So, British classical music station Scala Radio and psychologist Dr. Becky Spelman decided on the experiment to find out if background music hurts or lower work efficiency.
Four office workers were asked to transcribe(抄写) two 600-word sets of song lyrics. The first set was transcribed with no music playing, while the other was completed with classical music playing in the background. The first task, completed in silence, was completed in an average time of 20 minutes and 59 seconds. However, the second transcription exercise that involved music was completed in an average time of 17 minutes and 42 seconds. There is a difference of 15% between them.
“Music has very powerful influence on the brain. It affects mood, mental performance and physical performance,” says Dr. Spelman. “When provided with music, we can have a calm, regular beat, it can actually help us to stay calm, reducing our stress, slowing our heart rate, which makes it easier for us to focus on the task at hand.”
1. Why did other bosses strictly against their employees listening to music at work?2. Who took part in Dr. Becky Spelman’s experiment?

Near-sightedness (近视眼) is a big problem in China.
Liu Shuangrui, a 15-year-old boy from Liaoning Province, started to wear glasses 10 years ago. One-second of the 38 students in Liu’s class wear glasses. Does this sound anything like your classes? It’s reported by the National Health Commission that about 60 to 80 percent of Chinese between the ages of 13 and 19 are near-sighted. But young people aren’t the only ones with vision problems in China. There are about 450 million near-sighted people in China. That’s about one-third of the country’s population. This number has risen to 700 million by 2020.
“This is mainly due to the long time near-distance use of the eyes when people are studying or working,” Wang Ningli, a doctor at Beijing Tongren Hospital, told China News Service. There are many reasons for near-sightedness. First, many people spend a great deal of time staring at books and electronic devices, which causes eye problems.
In addition, many people know that reading under dim light is bad for one’s eyes. So they try to read only under bright light. However, if the light is too bright, it can also cause eye problems.
Eating too much sugar is another reason. It is believed that eating too much sugar can harm your eyes as well, CCTV News reported. Too much sugar in the body can cause a shortage of Vitamin B1. A lack of Vitamin B1 is very bad for your eyes and can make your eyesight worse.

Dear Maria,
I am a middle school student. I am writing to you because I have trouble with my English studies now. I hope you can give me some advice.
I work hard both at school and at home. In class, I listen to my teachers very carefully. I take notes of every word of the teachers. After school, I read my notes but sometimes I find that I can’t really understand them. The next day, while I am having class, I am still thinking about the problems. This kind of thing happens day after day. I want to ask the teachers for help. They are kind and I know they will try their best to help me. But they are always very busy. I ask my classmates for help. But they can’t explain things as clearly as the teachers. The night before the test, I still find that I can’t understand many things. So I always get bad grades.
What should I do? How can I improve my English studies? I hope I can hear from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Harry
