Important Skills for the Future
Our future life is hopeful but challenging. As teenagers, what important skills should we develop in the future?

Let’s imagine this: Your parents are going out of town for a week. You’re left with 800 yuan. How will you spend it? It would be silly to spend the money at the mall, especially if you already have great clothes in your room, right? A better way to spend that money would be on key things such as food and transportation. You’d probably also want to put part of the money aside for something else.
Well, you just learned how to budget (预算). It’s all about deciding what matters the most to you and how much you want to spend on these things.
Working out your priorities (优先事项) is the most important part of budgeting. For example, if you plan on buying a new smartphone and a cool smartwatch, you should consider saving some money. The next time your friends invite you to go to KTV with them, you might as well decide to pass.
But having a budget doesn’t mean you can’t have fun; you just have to get creative. Instead of meeting your friends at the pizza shop and then going to the movies, you could invite them over to your house. You can buy some frozen pizzas at the supermarket and watch a movie online. It’s a lot cheaper but just as fun.
If you search for budgeting tips, you’ll find many. As a young person, you have plenty of chances to experiment (尝试) with different ways. Once you find a way that works for you, it’s easier to get excited about budgeting.
Keep in mind that even adults make mistakes at times. If you go over your budget, just try to learn from your mistakes.

8 . Walking slowly out of the classroom by himself to the dining room; taking his lunch, sitting and eating alone at a table of four seats, such moments are pretty normal to be seen on the 14-year-old schoolboy, Peter. He spends most of his school time on his own, which leads his parents to worry about him so much.
His parents’ worries are easy to understand. It is widely accepted that being alone is a symbol of being left out and can bring a lot of trouble. Most people believe teenagers who are usually alone do have few friends and are unable to fit in with other people. At the same time, they are at greater risk of having mental (心理的) problems.
However, a new study by some researchers at Wilmington College, shows that this may not always be true. Whether it is bad for teenagers or not depends on the reasons why teenagers are alone. If it is their choice, it may play an active role in their personal growth.
According to their study, when teenagers choose to think alone, they put 100% of their attention into what is in their mind and are more likely to experience deeper thoughts and feelings than working with others. They may have a greater chance to create something new. In this way they can better develop their creativity (创造力).
On the other hand, the on-going noise children’s brains receive every day can put great stress on them and make it hard for them to focus (专注). Being alone lets them shut themselves of from the noisy outside world and think about what’s best for them. Slowly they improve their ability to focus.
As a matter of fact, our culture is always biased (偏见的) against being alone. Maybe it is the right time for us to rethink about Peter’s situation before we say what’s happening to him.

9 . Mobile phones (手机) have become a problem for middle schools. Some middle schools in Australia have stopped students from carrying mobile phones during school hours. The mobile phone use among children has become a problem for the school this year. Several children have got mobile phones as Christmas gifts, and more students will want them.
Mary, a teacher, said the mobile phone use is a distraction (干扰) to students during school hours and it also gives teachers so much trouble in their classrooms. Teachers also said that sometimes students might use phone messages to copy during exams. She said some schools tried to stop mobile phones. Some parents felt unhappy because they couldn’t get in touch with their children.
Many teachers said students should not have mobile phones at school, but if there was a good reason, they could leave their phones at the school office. They also said there were many reasons why the students should not have mobile phones at school, they were easy to lose and were a distraction for studies.
