1 . Nowadays, experts call on high school students to read as many literary classics (文学名著) as possible. What do you think of it?
Linda: We don’t have enough life experiences, so we may have difficulty understanding the deeper classics. But this shouldn’t be a reason to give up reading classics. As Francis Bacon said, “Reading makes a full man; conference (谈话) a ready man; and writing an exact man.”
Frank: Without background and life experiences, students can’t understand what writers want to express in their classics. While reading, some students mainly pay more attention to words and expressions than the hidden ideas. For this reason, reading classics might be a waste of time.
Curry: Classics are the treasures our ancestors left us. We should read them and pass them down. As the old Chinese saying goes “One who is filled with knowledge always behaves well.” Classics can open up our minds and develop our interest in culture.
Mary: On the one hand, not all classics are suitable for all students, as there are many difficult expressions and deep ideas. On the other hand, the special writing styles make it difficult for students to understand. So they won’t probably choose them.

2 . Mobile phones (手机) have become a problem for middle schools. Some middle schools in Australia have stopped students from carrying mobile phones during school hours. The mobile phone use among children has become a problem for the school this year. Several children have got mobile phones as Christmas gifts, and more students will want them.
Mary, a teacher, said the mobile phone use is a distraction (干扰) to students during school hours and it also gives teachers so much trouble in their classrooms. Teachers also said that sometimes students might use phone messages to copy during exams. She said some schools tried to stop mobile phones. Some parents felt unhappy because they couldn’t get in touch with their children.
Many teachers said students should not have mobile phones at school, but if there was a good reason, they could leave their phones at the school office. They also said there were many reasons why the students should not have mobile phones at school, they were easy to lose and were a distraction for studies.
Many people say that they understand why parents would want their children to have phones, but they think schools should let the students know when they can use their mobile phones.

That belief changed.
In an ordinary math class, my teacher raised a simple question: What’s 0.99 rounded (四舍五入) to a whole number? Easy. When rounded to a whole number, 0.99=1. Somehow, I thought even though 0.99 is only 0.01 away from 1, there’s still a 0.01 difference. That means even if two things are only a little different, they are still different, so doesn’t that make them completely different?
My teacher answered my question by giving another equation (等式): 1=0.9, which could also be expressed as 1=0.999999...repeating itself without ever ending.
There was something mysterious but fascinating about the equation. The left side was unchangeable. On the right was something endless, a number repeating itself limitless times (无限次). However, in a certain way, these two different things were connected by an equal sign.
Lying in bed, I thought about how much the equation is parallel to our life. The left side of the equation shows that sometimes life itself is so unchangeable and so clear. The certain, whole number of the day when you were born and the day when you would die. But then there is that gap in between life and death. The right side means a time and space full of limitless possibilities, and endless chances into the open future.
So that’s what life is. Objective but imaginative. Unchangeable but limitless. Life is an equation with two sides that balances itself out. Still, we can’t ever truly seem to put the perfect words to it. So possibly numbers can express ideas as words can. For now, let’s leave it at that: 1=0.999999...and live a life like it.

Both work and life are full of pressure in modern society. So, if you do something simple like washing dirty clothes, it can make you feel relaxed.
“Doing some housework such as washing the windows or ironing (熨) clothes is a good way to face the pressure,” says Carol Clark, a successful New York psychologist (心理学家). “While washing the windows,” she says, “Imagine you’re washing away all the little things in life that are troubling you. Cleaning the windows can help you sweep away some unhappy things.”
But some people didn’t agree. “Housework is the main reason for pressure in my life. I spend too much time on it and I need time to have a rest.” says Linda, a computer programmer and a mother of three children. “Get out of housework and then I’ll really be able to relax. Doing much housework makes me feel tired.”
Gary is a doctor and a single father of a six-month-old baby. He is even more against doing housework. “I pay a psychologist $200 an hour to help me relax, and the psychologist tells me to do some housework! I don’t know who is crazier—the psychologist or me!”
1. Does Carol Clark think doing some simple housework is a good way to face the pressure?2. How many children does Linda have?
3. What does Gary think of doing housework?
4. Do you think doing housework is helpful to solve your stress? Why or why not?
5 . Many parents make their children do chores around the house. For some families, teaching children what to do and how to do chores is easy. But in other families, getting children to do some housework can be a very big problem.
It is a good idea for parents to teach their children at an early age that all family members must work together to make the house clean, and each person must do his or her share (份) of the work. We can do this by starting a plan for chores and responsibilities when children are young.
Chores are good for children—even very young ones. Doing chores teaches children many important skills (技能) such as working together and being responsible. Doing chores also teaches children what fairness (公平) is. The skills and values (价值) from doing chores will do good to children all their lives.

6 . ①Have you ever thought about what’s more important, looking fashionable or feeling comfortable? You might have noticed many people choose style over comfort and that some even go to extremes (极端) to follow fashion. But we should remember: being fashionable isn’t everything. It’s more important to be healthy.
②Some people believe that they need to be a certain size to look good. So, they start extreme diets (节食) that are not good for their health. They might not eat meals or eat too little food, which can make them feel sick. Is it a healthy way to live?
③Also, many girls wear shoes with very high heels. They might think high heels make them look taller. But these shoes can actually hurt their feet and make it hard to walk comfortably, and it can increase risks of falls. Some even wear tight (紧身的) clothes that influence blood circulation (血液循环), making it hard to breathe. Should we put fashion over comfort and physical health?
④ Besides, some boys and girls spend a lot of time and money changing their hair color. The material they use is usually harmful to their health. To make their hair straight or curly, they also use tools that are hot enough to burn their hair. But using these tools too often or at very high temperatures can make the hair dry or even burnt. Is it really worth it to risk our health, spending so much time and money?
⑤So, let’s rethink what’s really important. Is it fashion or is it our well-being? Clothes or hairstyles don’t tell us anything about a person’s character. Instead of spending a lot of time choosing clothes, we could use that time to do fun things with friends. And instead of following extreme diets, let’s eat properly and exercise regularly. Remember, your worth is not decided by your appearance, but by who you are as a person.

7 . Sometimes people come into your life and you know at once that they were sure to be there. They serve some kind of purpose, teach you a lesson or help find out who you are or who you want to become. You never know who these people may be: your classmate, neighbor, teacher, long-lost friend or even a real stranger. But you know that every moment they will affect (影响)your life in some serious way.
Sometimes things happen to you. At the time they may seem terrible, painful and unfair. But later you realize that without getting over those difficulties you would have never realized your further ability and strength (力量). Everything happens for a reason and nothing happens by chance or with good or bad luck.
The people who you meet can affect your life. And the successes and failure (失败) you experience can create who you are. Even the bad experiences can be learned from. In fact, they are probably the most poignant and important ones.
Enjoy every day even every moment and take from it everything that you possibly can, for you may never be able to experience it again. Talk to people who you have never talked to before, and really listen. You should set your sights high, hold your head up, tell yourself you are a great one and believe in yourself.

Televisions are like books or films. A child can learn bad things and good things from them. Some shows help children to understand the news and places from other countries or other times in history. With television a child does not have to go to the zoo to see animals or to the ocean to see a ship. Boys and girls can see a play a concert or a game at home.
