In China, safety education is becoming more and more important. Stampedes(蜂拥), earthquakes and fires are three serious accidents at school. Students need to learn about how to keep themselves safe at school.
Stampedes often happen in crowded places. When the people begin to push you, you should stand there and hold something, If you fall down in these crowed places, you should protect your head with your hands.
Earthquakes always happen suddenly. If you are inside a building, you can hide under a table or a chair, because it will protect you from being hurt by the falling things. If you are outside a building, you should find an open place and stay away from buildings and trees.
When there’s a fire, leave the classroom as soon as possible. While leaving the classroom you’d better put something wet over your mouth and noses. In this way, you won’t take in the smoke. In fact, many people die in a fire because of the smoke. The smoke is full of CO₂ and that makes it difficult for people to breathe. So you should make yourself close to the floor and try to get out quickly. Then you will be safe and you can breathe the fresh air.
1. Where do stampedes often happen?2. Why do you hide under a table or a chair when you are inside a building?
3. What should you do when there’s a fire?

What should you do if a big fire happens at home? There is no much time to think. People need to act quickly. The following rules will be helpful:
Shout out
If you smell smoke or see fire, shout out “fire”! Shout as loudly as you can, because people may be asleep at night.
Call 119
Never try to put out a fire yourself, even if it is a very small one! Get help from your parents or call 119.
Keep down close to the floor
If there is a lot of smoke in your room, keep down close to the floor. There is less smoke down there. It is easier to breathe and see where you are going. Take a wet towel to cover your mouth and nose with it. And it can protect you from the smoke and fire.
Check the door
Check the door before you open it. Touch it with the back of your hand. If the door is cool, open it carefully. If the door is hot, do not open it.
Get out
If you can, get out of your home as quickly as you can. Do not stop to pick up anything. A fire can become very big in a few seconds!
Don’t use the lift
Never use the lift during a fire. Always use the stairs. A lift may stop at a floor where the fire is burning. It may also go wrong and keep you inside.
Don’t go back
Never go back into a building on fire! Even if you have left your pet or favorite toy inside, do not go back for it.

Three days ago, Tom, one of my classmates bought some food from a supermarket. He bought some beef, pork, chicken, fruit and vegetables. Because it was his fifteenth birthday, and he wanted to have a big party at home. He invited most of his classmates to share the food together. But after they had the food, all of them didn’t feel well. They got poisoned (中毒) and had a stomachache.

Dear Amanda,
Your parents sound very strict. It’s hard to believe that your mom chooses what you wear. Are you a Barbie doll?
Try to take the first step when possible. Dress yourself before your mother has a chance to come in and choose your clothes. If she asks you to change, tell her you’ll be late for school.
You should also talk to her. Ask about her choices: What makes a set of clothes acceptable or unacceptable? Tell her you will follow her rules, but you want to make the choices. You are not in the first grade. You are a young lady in high school.
As for your father, it’s difficult to argue with his mind. After all, he is not totally wrong. How strict is he? Does he lock you up with your textbooks? Are you allowed to have a hobby? Are you allowed to have a smartphone? Are you allowed to hang out with friends?
Such strict parents should know the law of diminishing returns(收益递减). A weightlifter, for example, can only lift for an hour or two each day. If she does more, her muscles will not become stronger. She will just get tired. She may even hurt herself!
Our brains also have limits(限度). Some violin teachers say you should only practice a new skill for 15 minutes each day because our brains need to relax and understand new information. Our brains also have a basic need to socialize(社交). Ask your father: what is the meaning of so much studying if it makes you feel unhappy?
Stay strong.

Thang-ga(唐卡) is a special kind of painting. It was found only in Tibet, China. It started from the Tang Dynasty(唐朝 ). Thang-ga paintings show Tibetan people’s lives. In recent years, Thang-ga paintings have caught the public’s attention. At the same time, the Chinese government has also tried hard to protect the art.
The colors of Thang-ga paintings look wonderful and special. Because of the special environment of Tibet and the excellent skills of artists, the paints( 颜料) used in Thang-ga are different from other paints. They were made from minerals like gold and silver, as well as some plants. The paints were made by hand and the beautiful colors could last for hundreds of years.
However, with the development of technology, people now use cheaper and more easily-made chemicals to make Thang-ga paints. The traditional paints used in Thang-ga paintings took a lot of work and they were made in many secret ways. Later people stopped making the paints and forgot about them. So the skills needed to make them were almost lost. The traditional Thang-ga paintings are difficult to find now.

Dear Maria,
How are you?
My life has changed a lot since I became a student of Grade 9.
Yours,
Liu Mei
Do you like sports? If your answer is yes, sometimes you’ll find it very difficult to have enough time to do it even on weekends. However you don’t have to worry about it because of “Sunshine Sports Program”. It was launched(启动)by the Ministry of Education(教育部). It suggests that students around the country should spend at least an hour on sports every day. Students will be able to do any sport they like. The program is to make students happy and keep them healthy. |
Han Jiawen from Shanghai Yangsi Middle School likes the idea. Han and her classmates like rope skipping(跳绳). “We have a good time.” said Han, “Playing is better than having classes.” |
Wang Lichao welcomes the idea too. “It’s good to be able to breathe some fresh air instead of sitting in the classroom.” But the 14-year-old student from Tianjin wonders whether there will be enough space for everyone. “With so many students outside” he said, “I’m afraid there won’t be enough standing room on the playground.” |
Wu Jiatong’s school is in Liaoning. Her favorite sport is running. Wu and other students like running for 40 minutes every morning. “It’s tiring.” said Wu, “but we feel healthier. We hope we can do what we want.” |
What about your school? There must be more sports that interest you and your schoolmates. |
