Recently, 16-year-old Olympic champion Quan Hongchan attracted most attention in her first Asian Games held in Hangzhou, 2023. She’s made history in the women’s 10-meter platform diving event.

Quan was born in the city of Zhanjiang in south China’s Guangdong Province, and started diving at the age of 7. In 2018, she joined the Guangdong Diving Team, spending three years there before breaking into the national team at the end of 2020. He Weiyi, a diving coach at the Guangdong Provincial Sports Team said, “Up on the 10-meter platform, it was where Quan showed her talent. It looks high up here, but believe it or not, in just three years’ time, Quan could manage some very difficult sets of movements. Her development was much quicker than most athletes. I’d say she’s got outstanding talent.” But talent alone doesn’t always make sure of success. For Quan, hard work has been the key to success. Quan always practices harder than other athletes around her age. Because of her great effort and achievement in diving, she has attracted the public attention all over the world.

“Quan is actually a very easygoing person and she is always energetic during training and competition. She always carries a smile and shines in many ways. This is what Chinese astronauts Fei Junlong and Nie Haisheng said in Hong Kong. Fei, Nie and leading engineers of Shenzhou VI visited Hong Kong. They talked with primary, high school and college students.

The kids were interested in the astronauts’ life in space. They asked questions like “Did you see the Great Wall from space?” Fei and Nie said they didn’t. But they felt excited when they passed over China. Speaking of the life in space, they said teamwork with each other was the most important. “We are like the left and right hands,” they said.

Some young people wanted to know how the astronauts developed their careers（事业）. “How did you decide to be astronauts when China’s space industry is still at the beginning?” asked a young woman. They said it was because of their love for flight and the need of the country. They said their love for flight could be seen from their children’s names…Nie’s daughter is called “Nie Tianxiang”, which means “flying up high”. Fei’s son is called Fei Di, which sounds like “Fei Die”, meaning UFO.

A pop-up installation（弹出式装置）that looked like a bookstore was open in Shanghai. It drew much attention because of its unusual offering. The 9-square-metre place could hold only six people at a time. The 3000 old books on display were not for sale or loan（借出）. Visitors could only read in the tiny bookstore.

“Our pace of life is getting faster. Today, we can only read books by using fragments（碎片）of time. The way we search for information has also changed from reading books to watching Tik Tok,” said Zhuang Jie, one of the five people behind the installation. “We hope to inspire（激励）visitors to rethink their ways of reading while inside our bookstore. We also want to provide new option（选择）for the young generations（一代人）, who have not experienced much traditional reading.”

During the 15-day display, the bookstore attracted about 500 visitors. Zhuang said that they had never expected so many people. “People were even willing to wait in line to enter. We realized that we might all love to read but just need a window to do it,” he said. The installation also proved to be a hit online. It was among the most searched terms（搜索词）on social platform Sina Weibo. Famous writer, Rao Xueman also mentioned the installation on her Weibo account. She hopes to roll out（推出）a similar project in the future.

Zhuang also said that more installations like this would be open soon. He mentioned these installations might have something to do with old toys and their stories.

World Reading Day was set up by UNESCO in 1995. Its purpose is to encourage people, especially teenagers, to discover the pleasure of reading. It is also the day to honor great writers, like William Shakespeare, who was born or died on that day.

Many countries celebrate World Reading Day. Take the UK as an example. On that day, millions of school children can buy books at a lower price than usual in any bookstore. As we all know, National Reading has been put in the Government Work Report in order to encourage a love for reading in all Chinese people.

Do you know what the body mass index (BMI体重指数) is? BMI is measure that uses your height and weight to work out if you are fit. For healthy adults, the normal BMI is between 18.5 and 24. If your BMI is too high, you are too fat. In the opposite way, you are too thin.

Some cities in China have included BMI in the PE test for zhongkao. For example, Beijing announced (宣布) that BMI became a subject of the PE test for zhongkao. Chengdu and Shanghai have also taken similar action.
