We’ll finally grow up someday, leaving parents and facing the challenges in life. Parents may not be able to solve every problem for us. Instead, we should have enough life skills to deal with the problems in our daily life. But hard-working spirit education(劳动教育) has not been regarded as important these years. Many teens do not realize the importance of working hard and are uninterested in doing so. According to a study of nearly 3,000 students that was done by Ningbo Evening News, only 22 percent of primary and middle school students help with everyday chores around the house. To make hard-working spirit education more important among students of different ages, the government has announced a guideline(指导方针) these days. Students should learn life skills and form good working habits through such education. Students should also learn to use the knowledge and skills they have learned to serve others and the society, making their sense of social responsibility(责任) strong. Schools and families play an important role in teaching students about the value of working hard, the guideline says. Primary and middle schools should provide students with hard-working spirit classes every week. Activities can also be held to give students real-world work experience. As children’s first teachers, parents should also encourage them to learn how to do chores at home, including cooking, washing their own clothes and tidying their rooms. |

On a school day, 60 students at Xishan Primary School in Shunde, Guangdong, learned how to make com soup (玉米汤) and fried pork (炸猪排) in an after-school cooking class. They needed to work in groups to make dishes. Since September in 2021, Xishan Primary School has had after-school classes for students. It came after the “double reduction” policy (双减政策). The policy asked schools to cut down homework as well as improve education (教育) and after-school services. “Our homework is less than before,” said 13-year-old Shen Yuzhe from Beijing. “And teachers have taught more slowly so we can have enough time to take in information”. Almost all primary and middle schools now offer two-hour after-school services on weekdays. More than 90% of students can finish their written homework on time. About 92.7% of schools have opened after-school arts and sports classes. “Because my child can finish homework at school, so we can enjoy family time in the evening. Learning practical skills plays an important role in shaping a person’s character for sure.
Some schools and students have already practiced their practical activities. Gu Quan, 13 years old, from No.18 Middle School, used to be a lazy boy. But things have changed since No.18 Middle School made housework part of its students’ homework. Doing the dishes, cooking and making the bed… All of these tasks have become part of Gu Quan’s daily life.
At the beginning of each month, every student gets a list of housework to do every weekend. Their parents help them keep a record of their performance. The tasks are common and simple in daily life, such as sweeping the floor, washing cups and cooking food. Huang Yixi, 14, has learned several life skills, including cooking. “I used to be afraid of fire,” she said. But she managed to get over her fear and complete her cooking tasks. Do you like sports? If your answer is yes, sometimes you’ll find it very difficult to have enough time to do it, even on weekends. However, you don’t have to worry about it because of Sunshine Sports Program. It was launched(启动) by the Ministry of Education(教育部).
It suggests that students around the country should have an hour of sports every day. Students will be able to do any sport they like. The program is to make students happy and keep them healthy.
Han Jiawen, from Shanghai Yangsi Middle School, likes the idea. Han and her classmates skip ropes(跳绳) together. “We have a good time,” Han said, “Playing is better than having classes.”
Wang Lichao welcomes the idea, too. “It’s good to be able to breathe some fresh air instead of sitting in the classroom.” But the 14-year-old student from Tianjin wonders whether there will be enough space for everyone. “With so many students outside,” he said. “I’m afraid there won’t be enough standing room on the playground.” Wu Jiatong’s school is in Liaoning. Her favorite sport is running. Wu and other students like running for 40 minutes every morning. “It’s tiring,” Wu said. “But we do feel healthier. We hope we can do what we want.”

Not only adults but also teenagers have problems in their life. Here is a survey showing the main problems of teenagers.
The first is that they feel stressed (感到有压力的) because they have too much homework to do both at school and at home. They have lots of exams to take. And parents usually send them to different classes at weekends.
The second one is that more and more teenagers are getting short-sighted (近视). They often read in bed or keep reading for a long time without having a rest. Some of them are crazy about playing computer games. Some spend too much time watching TV.
Another serious problem among teenagers is that many of them are becoming fat. They eat too much junk food, but they take little exercise.
I think teenagers should think of ways to deal with the problems. They should make a plan for study and hobbies and find time to relax as much as possible.

“Screen time” refers to time spent in front of a screen, such as watching TV, working on a computer, or playing on mobile phones.
Most American children spend about 3 hours a day watching TV.
Added together, all types of total screen time can be 5 to 7 hours a day.
Computer, TV or mobile phones can help children with their education. But spending too much time on them is not good. For example, too much screen time can increase children’s rick of putting on too much weight.
Dr. Holland from America says screen time takes something important away from a child, including exercise, sleep and developmental activities. “Screen time is time that is not spent being physically active, and that children are missing out on learning valuable skills and developing their brains,” explains Dr. Holland.
So the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) suggests the following screen time guidelines to children:
Children under 2: Avoid all screen time.
Children aged 2-5: Have no more than one hour of screen time each day.
Children aged 6 and older: Set personal screen time limits(限制) to make sure their study, sleep and exercise won’t be influenced.
In 2019, the World Health Organization(WHO) set its own guidelines that are similar to AAP’s.
Cutting screen time down to 2 hours a day can be hard for children. But parents can set good examples first. They should spend less than 2 hours a day on screens. And parents should not watch TV during meals. Parents can play board games with their children or try other activities. In this way, they will live a more colorful and healthier life.
1. How long do most American children watch TV a day?2. Where did Dr. Holland from?
3. Who should avoid all screen time according to AAP?
4. When did WHO set its own screen time guidelines?
5. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?

My name is Ann. I worked as a volunteer in 2023 because I wanted to do something to help others. I called some charity shops (慈善商店) to ask if they needed volunteers. Although I didn’t mind where I volunteered, I was glad that one of the Sue Ryder shops said yes. Sue Ryder was a charity very close to my heart because volunteers from Sue Ryder once cared for my dad in the hospital.
Volunteering in the shop helped me know what shop work was like and I was surprised to find how much I really enjoyed doing it. I also found how important the public (公众) were. Lots of people gave us things they didn’t need for the shops to sell. In this way Sue Ryder raised money to care for people with life-changing illness. I always left the charity shop late because I knew how important the work of Sue Ryder was.
Another thing I enjoyed about volunteering was talking with other volunteers in the shop. They were friendly and helpful. I really improved my teamwork skills by volunteering. I worked in the shop from late April to early August. I learned many things from it and I’m sure they will be useful in the future.
1. Why did Ann work as a volunteer?2. Who once got help from Sue Ryder in Ann’s family?
3. Did Ann enjoy volunteering in the Sue Ryder charity shop?
4. What did Ann think of other volunteers in the Sue Ryder charity shop?
5. How long did Ann work in the Sue Ryder charity shop?

Hi Bob,
How are things with you? Are you having a good time in China? I hope you’re having fun now.
Well, I hurt (伤) my left leg, so I’m in hospital now. It’s boring for me to be here, but things are not so bad. The doctors and nurses in the hospital are really nice. They help me a lot. There are three other boys (Bill, John and David) in my room. I like them and we have lots of things to talk about. We are friends now.
Bill and John are good at math but I am not. I think I can ask them for help. David’s favourite is history. As for the sports, we all like soccer best. Playing soccer is interesting and it’s good for our health. I really want to play soccer, but I can’t now.
But good news is that I will be out of hospital next Monday. So I can be in the play at the school festival next Friday. I hope you can come.
