What should you do if a big fire happens at home? There is no much time to think. People need to act quickly. The following rules will be helpful:
Shout out
If you smell smoke or see fire, shout out “fire”! Shout as loudly as you can, because people may be asleep at night.
Call 119
Never try to put out a fire yourself, even if it is a very small one! Get help from your parents or call 119.
Keep down close to the floor
If there is a lot of smoke in your room, keep down close to the floor. There is less smoke down there. It is easier to breathe and see where you are going. Take a wet towel to cover your mouth and nose with it. And it can protect you from the smoke and fire.
Check the door
Check the door before you open it. Touch it with the back of your hand. If the door is cool, open it carefully. If the door is hot, do not open it.
Get out
If you can, get out of your home as quickly as you can. Do not stop to pick up anything. A fire can become very big in a few seconds!
Don’t use the lift
Never use the lift during a fire. Always use the stairs. A lift may stop at a floor where the fire is burning. It may also go wrong and keep you inside.
Don’t go back
Never go back into a building on fire! Even if you have left your pet or favorite toy inside, do not go back for it.

In China, safety education is becoming more and more important. Stampedes(蜂拥), earthquakes and fires are three serious accidents at school. Students need to learn about how to keep themselves safe at school.
Stampedes often happen in crowded places. When the people begin to push you, you should stand there and hold something, If you fall down in these crowed places, you should protect your head with your hands.
Earthquakes always happen suddenly. If you are inside a building, you can hide under a table or a chair, because it will protect you from being hurt by the falling things. If you are outside a building, you should find an open place and stay away from buildings and trees.
When there’s a fire, leave the classroom as soon as possible. While leaving the classroom you’d better put something wet over your mouth and noses. In this way, you won’t take in the smoke. In fact, many people die in a fire because of the smoke. The smoke is full of CO₂ and that makes it difficult for people to breathe. On the morning of June 4th, 2022, the D2809 high-speed train left Guiyang North Railway Station and headed for Guangzhou as usual. At around 10:30 am, it arrived at the entrance of Yuezhai Tunnel (月寨隧道口) in front of Rongjiang Station. Suddenly, one of the train drivers noticed that there was something wrong with the railway. As the train was running at a speed of nearly 250 kilometers per hour, any abnormality (异常) of the railway might lead to an incident. So the driver took action as quickly as he could. He took emergency braking measures (紧急制动措施) within 5 seconds at the time of the incident. After braking, the train continued to slide for more than 900 meters and hit Rongjiang station platform to stop. The driver’s quick action and the protective effect of the high-speed railway prevented the train from overturning and falling. However, this incident still resulted in the off-line of No. 7 and No. 8 cars. Eight people were injured.
The local government set out to rescue at once and the injured people were sent to Rongjiang County Hospital. All of them were safe but the driver, unfortunately, he died.
It turned out that there was a huge pile of mud near the entrance of Yuezhai Tunnel and after days of heavy rain, the mud became mudslides (泥石流). The mudslides flowed into the tunnel and covered the railway, which caused the incident.

Children know that summer is the most fun of all seasons. However, experts(专家) say it is also the most dangerous, especially, for children aged 14 and under. In its first study of children’s safety in the US, the National Safe Kids Campaign(NSKC) found that nearly half of the injury-related(与受伤相关的) deaths among children happen in summer.
Experts are not surprised by the study’s results. They always know summer is a dangerous season for children. During the summer, children are out of school and spend more time outdoors. They are more likely to get into an accident or be hurt.
“While we encourage children to be active and spend time outdoors, they need to understand the importance of safety.”said Everett Koop, an expert of the NSKC.
To help children stay safe, the NSKC started a “Make It a Safe Kids Summer” campaign (运动)during National Safe Kids Week, from May 5 through May 12. Here are some important summer safety tips from the NSKC:
*Always wear your seat belt.
*Make sure there is an adult around when you decide to go swimming.
*Wear a life jacket(救生衣) when on a boat or doing water sports.
*Obey(遵守) all traffic rules(交通规则).
1. Which season do experts think is the most dangerous?2. What did NSKC find in its first study of children’s safety in the US?

Should parents pay kids to do chores?
This helps kids know that how hard it is to make money. They also get to know the real value(价值)of money. For example,I give my daughter Susan $1 each time for doing the dishes or cleaning the living room. She saves the money and spends it on her favorite books.
Catherine
Rewards(奖励)are always helpful in developing good habits. It’s important to provide some rewards for kids doing chores. It could be money, something fun on the weekend or just words like “Nice work on the dishes!”
Mandy
What’s going to be their motivation(动机)to keep the rooms clean when children move out to live alone? I drive to my children’s flats once a week and give them $20 if they do well. They need to learn that the only real reword for doing chores is having a clean home.
Judy
Doing chores without getting paid teaches kids the true meaning of hard work. My son always helps sweep the floor without getting paid. In my opinion, if you pay kids to do chores, they might stop helping unless they’re being paid. Also, kids might start asking for more money to do simple chores. Is this really what you want?

Sun Ruifeng, a mother in Beijing, changed some of her plans for her 8-year-old son’s summer vacation. She looked for an after-school English class, but in the end, she changed it to a swimming training class. “Because of the strict rules on after-school classes, many parents like me choose sports or other projects for developing interests instead,” Sun said.
Sun’s choice is part of the result of the government’s growing efforts to lighten the pressure (压力) on students.
On July 24, Chinese government made a policy (政策) for primary and junior high school students. According to the policy, homework for children below the third grade is not allowed, while homework for junior high school students should take no longer than 90 minutes to finish. Besides, primary and middle schools are asked to offer after-school services, including homework tutoring (作业辅导), sports, arts, reading and interest groups.
Many parents showed their support for the policy. “Subject learning is enough at school and we hope to improve the children’s whole quality of life during holidays,” a parent surnamed Zhou in Guangzhou told Sally, a reporter.
However, there were also some problems. A parent surnamed Chen in Shanxi said that although she agreed with the policy, she worried what her son would do after school if both parents had no time to be with him.

To be successful at school matters a lot for students. However, some students have trouble in getting good grades. Are you one of them? If so, here are some tips for you.
Manage your time in a wise way.
Make sure you finish the work that needs to be done in time. Leaving it till the next morning can make things chaotic(混乱的). When I was a student at River School, my English teacher Mr. Brown never allowed us to leave our homework till the next morning.
Be successful in the classroom.
This means many things. Come to class every day on time. Listen to your teachers carefully in class and take part in class activities actively. If you have any questions, be sure to ask your teachers for help.
Take good notes.
While you are taking notes, you need to learn to recognize(辨别)important information.
For example, if the teacher has taken the time to repeat something, or write it on the blackboard, it will probably be important later, perhaps on a test of some kind. However, you don’t need to write down everything the teacher says.
