Sun Ruifeng, a mother in Beijing, changed some of her plans for her 8-year-old son’s summer vacation. She looked for an after-school English class, but in the end, she changed it to a swimming training class. “Because of the strict rules on after-school classes, many parents like me choose sports or other projects for developing interests instead,” Sun said.
Sun’s choice is part of the result of the government’s growing efforts to lighten the pressure (压力) on students.
On July 24, Chinese government made a policy (政策) for primary and junior high school students. According to the policy, homework for children below the third grade is not allowed, while homework for junior high school students should take no longer than 90 minutes to finish. Besides, primary and middle schools are asked to offer after-school services, including homework tutoring (作业辅导), sports, arts, reading and interest groups.
Many parents showed their support for the policy. “Subject learning is enough at school and we hope to improve the children’s whole quality of life during holidays,” a parent surnamed Zhou in Guangzhou told Sally, a reporter.
However, there were also some problems. A parent surnamed Chen in Shanxi said that although she agreed with the policy, she worried what her son would do after school if both parents had no time to be with him.
Anyhow, we all hope the new policy will work.
1. How old is Sun Ruifeng’s son?2. Why do many parents make the same choice as Sun Ruifeng?
3. When did Chinese government make the policy?
4. Who did Sally interview?
5. What did the parent surnamed Chen in Shanxi worry?

Dear Mr. White,
I’m John. My parents always put so much pressure (压力) on me. In my free time, they only ask me to take many after-school classes. A few days ago, I didn’t get a good grade in the science exam. My mom got angry and kept on saying she failed to raise me. I’m so nervous now. What should I do?
Dear John,
Sometimes parents make mistakes too. Perhaps your parents face many difficulties in their lives and want to give you the best. As a result, they push you too hard.
You must be crazy about this. But you can’t argue (争吵) with your parents. I think you should have open communication with them. You could say, “Mom, I love you and I want to do my best. But what you said is not helping me out. Instead, it is making me so nervous. I need you to help me but not hurt me. I understand you want me to have an easier life than you had. But I also need to have more time to relax and be a child.” After you communicate your feelings to your parents, maybe they can understand you.
If you have any problems, you’re welcome to Mr. White’s counseling (咨询) room. We can talk face to face. I am there every Friday.
1. When did John have the science exam?2. How does John feel now?

Dear Mike, My friend owes (欠) me money. But he always finds excuses (借口) in order not to return it. It’s been three months and he hasn’t paid me back. What should I do? — Justin |
Dear Justin, When I was younger, someone gave me a very useful piece of advice. They said to me, “Mike, never lend (借) more money than you’re prepared to lose.” It means that when you lend people money, you should probably expect that you’re not going to get any of it back. This is true even when you lend money to friends and family. However, that doesn’t mean you’re out of luck. When people lend money to me, I always make sure to pay it back in full because I want others to trust me. Perhaps you can talk to your friend. You can explain to him that if he doesn’t pay you back, it will cause you to lose trust in him. If you lose trust, you might find it harder to help him in the future. This should send him a strong message that it’s not right for him to borrow money from you without paying you back. — Mike |

In July, China introduced the “double reduction” policy (双减政策). It hopes to reduce students’ learning stress by reducing homework and after-school classes. Two months has passed since the new term began. How do students feel about this new policy?
“Our homework is clearly less than before,” said 13-year-old Shen Yuzhe from Beijing. “We are not encouraged to buy workbooks anymore. The exercises are mainly from the textbook.”
According to Shen, teachers now teach at a much slower pace (节奏), so students have enough time to process new knowledge. “Our teachers are also giving us more chances to do experiments and learn from real life,” said Shen. “For example, we went to research ants during a biology class. This is a much better way to learn things than just hitting the books.” For 13-year-old Zhang Hangming from Tianjin, the best thing about “double reduction” is the increased time in after-school activities. “We can now spend more time taking part in clubs and activities, such as dancing, volleyball and drama.” said Zhang.
Both Shen and Zhang find there are fewer exams now. But they think it’s not a good thing. “Exams push me to study harder. Each exam shows progress as well as weak points.” Zhang said.
Shen also pointed out that when burden is lightened, self-discipline (自律) becomes the key. “Some students now spend more time having fun when homework is finished early. But if you use all the free time to relax, you might fall behind.” he said.
1. How many students gave their opinions?2. According to the policy, how can students’ learning stress be reduced?
3. How old is Shen Yuzhe?
4. Why do students have enough time to process new knowledge?
5. In Zhang’s eyes, what does each exam show?

Since the “double reduction” is introduced in China, it has had a big influence on students’ study and life.
Since the introduction of the new “double reduction (双减)” education policy, the school has been reducing students’ homework and after-school tutoring pressure. Some students are writing to the school magazines about how they think of the policy. Shen Yuzhe, boy, 13, Grade 7 The “double reduction policy” (“双减”政策) really helps me. Our homework is clearly less than before. I can finish it at school with no need to take it home. Instead, I can review (复习) or preview(预习) school work when I’m home. Besides, teachers now teach at a much slower pace so that we have enough time to understand what we have learned. I’m also happy to find there are fewer exams. Zhang Hangming, boy, 13, Grade 8 The best thing about the “double reduction” is the increased (增加的) time in after-school activities such as dancing, volleyball and drama (戏剧). I have joined a group called “leadership development”, learning all kinds of useful skills. Teachers are also giving us more chances to learn from real life. For example, we went to research earthworms (蚯蚓) in a field (田野) during a biology class. Cui Ruqi, girl, 12, Grade 9 Because of “double reduction” we have less homework than before. There is only one concern (担心): We can no longer see the rankings (排名) after each exam. For sure, I do feel less stress without knowing them. But at the same time, it leaves me confused (困惑的) about what level I am at. |

At the same time, there won’t be any subject-based training courses on weekends and holidays from Grade 1 to 9. How does this policy affect our life?

A new curriculum standard (课程标准) for labor (劳动) education has come out recently. Students have to take labor lessons, including everyday chores, productive (生产) labor and services. These lessons are to develop students’ hard-working spirit and important living skills.
Starting from the coming new term in September, students in primary and middle schools will have at least one lesson every week. Primary school students in the first and second grades need to do simple housework like washing vegetables and peeling fruit, and learning to keep plants or small animals. The third and fourth graders should clean their classrooms, wash their underwear, socks and shoes, and know how to make cold dishes and use home appliances (家用电器). The fifth and sixth graders should learn skills of cooking two or three common dishes, such as fried eggs.
Middle school students are encouraged to cook three or four dishes independently. Moreover, they should learn how to make traditional artworks. Social service or volunteer work are also needed.
It’s important for parents to realize the importance of labor education and make chores lists to improve students’ independence. It’s not enough for children to simply finish the work. They should learn to enjoy the work.

Some students wanted to be scientists because they thought that science was interesting. Other students would like to be teachers or doctors. They thought that their parents would be happy if they chose the jobs. When I was a young boy, my parents told me I could do what I liked. I usually laughed and thought this was a bit silly. However, I really thanked them for their advice and help with my learning. At the age of 18, I got the excellent advice from several teachers. They told me how important it was to have a dream.
