On December 11th, 2020, Chinese high school principal (校长) Zhang Guimei got the title “Role Model of the Times” for her dedication (奉献) to education for girls in the mountainous areas.
Zhang walked thousands of kilometres, visited students’ families in the deep mountains, talked to villagers and asked girls to go back to school, because most students didn’t do well in their study before the school was set up.
“My biggest dream is to send more girls to college. I want my students to go to the best universities in China. I want children in the mountainous areas to enter famous colleges, such as Tsinghua University and Peking University.” Zhang said.

My Great Example
As we all know, the power of example is great, so most teenagers have their own examples.

In my case, I’ve volunteered in an animal center to help dogs. Back in 2021, some friends and I went to an animal center outside of Bejjing. There, I was able to get close to the animals. There were not only dogs at the center, however. I saw many kinds of other animals as well, such as foxes and cats. Still, our main task was to help the dogs by giving them walks. My Favorite Timetable

Being a Volunteer is Great!
In recent years, it’s becoming more and more popular that young people volunteer to help people in need in their spare time.
Have you ever heard of Zhang Guimei? She is the principal of Huaping High School for Girls. Recently she has been given the title “Role Model of the Times” for helping girls from poor families.
The school was the first high school in the country to provide free education for girls who would otherwise have been unable to continue their studies after completing their nine years of education.
Zhang moved to Lijiang at the age of 17 and taught in a middle school in Huaping County. Once, she got badly ill but had no money for the treatment. With the help of the people there, she was able to get the necessary treatment. “From then on, I told myself that I must do something for those people who helped me,” Zhang said.
