In recent years, the extended classes in our school have become increasingly popular among students. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

3 . Boys and girls, let’s do an experiment (实验) in today’s lesson.
What we need:
How we do the experiment:
1.Pour tag water into the glass until it is about 2/3 full.
2.Drop the egg carefully into the glass and watch it going down towards the bottom.
3.Add about five spoons of salt to the water. Test to see if the egg goes up.
4.Add more salt if the egg is still at the bottom.
The science behind it:
Things go down in the water when they are denser (密度更大的) than the water. By adding salt, we make the water denser. Once the water is denser than the egg, it goes up and floats (漂浮) on the water.
You can also try other things to see if you can have the same result.

A.Once the egg is dense r than the water, it goes up and floats on the water. |
B.The water with salt is dense enough to make the egg float. |
C.Drop different things into the water, we can get different results. |
A.Because tap water is denser than salt water. |
B.Because the more the liquid there is, the easier it is for an object to float. |
C.Because the denser the liquid is, the easier it is for an object to float in it. |

5 . ________ Take the following as examples.
Traffic solutions
Do you know how the timing of traffic lights is decided to avoid traffic jams? Traffic engineers use special math models to set these timings. They are called traffic flow (流量) models. They consider the number of cars, zebra crossing, the time of day, and any events happening. With these models, engineers can work out the best timings for traffic lights in the city. Moreover, researchers are always trying to make these models better to prevent traffic jams more effectively.
Literature
UK scientist Sarah Hart presents some interesting thoughts about “three”. She said that the number has a special influence on Western literature and languages.
According to Hart, three sticks can create a triangle (三角形), the most basic stable (稳定的) structure. With “a sense of strength and completeness (完整)”, she said, “three” becomes common in our languages. Many common expressions in English come as three words, such as “ready, set, go”. Some nursery (童谣) rhymes have a word repeated three times, such as “row, row, row your boat”. In stories, there are usually three main characters, such as Harry, Ron and Hermione in the Harry Potter series. For a series of novels, there are usually three books rather than four.
Weather prediction
As we have a further understanding of nature, we come to realize that it can be explained through math. Math plays an important role in weather prediction.
Every day, supercomputers process thousands of observations from Earth, including air pressure, water levels, temperature, and wind speed. These observations are presented in data (数据). Using different mathematical methods, these supercomputers analyze (分析) the data and predict global weather patterns.
So, don’t make math just appear on students’ homework.

7 . If you ask 10 students which subject he or she hates most, 9 of them will answer “Math”. No matter which country you visit, no matter which grade you are in, you may not learn Art, Biology, Chemistry or Chinese, but you always learn Math. Why do so many students hate Math and yet cannot avoid learning it at school?
Jenny Sanders, a high school student in California, asks “What good do we get from learning Math? We can use computers to calculate (计算) numbers and we can use computers to store information. I think learning Math at school is a waste of time.”
However, there is much more to Math than just learning to add and subtract numbers. In fact, Math is not so much about calculation because it is about learning to think logically (逻辑地) and working out problems. Of course, Jenny was right that we can use computers to do calculations, but if we can’t think logically, how could we know how to use the computer? In short, computers are only tools when solving problems.
For example, imagine you are a cook and must prepare dinner for 100 people. How should you divide your resources so that you can get the job done fastest and best? To think logically will help you work out your problems in a better way.
