1 . ________ Take the following as examples.
Traffic solutions
Do you know how the timing of traffic lights is decided to avoid traffic jams? Traffic engineers use special math models to set these timings. They are called traffic flow (流量) models. They consider the number of cars, zebra crossing, the time of day, and any events happening. With these models, engineers can work out the best timings for traffic lights in the city. Moreover, researchers are always trying to make these models better to prevent traffic jams more effectively.
Literature
UK scientist Sarah Hart presents some interesting thoughts about “three”. She said that the number has a special influence on Western literature and languages.
According to Hart, three sticks can create a triangle (三角形), the most basic stable (稳定的) structure. With “a sense of strength and completeness (完整)”, she said, “three” becomes common in our languages. Many common expressions in English come as three words, such as “ready, set, go”. Some nursery (童谣) rhymes have a word repeated three times, such as “row, row, row your boat”. In stories, there are usually three main characters, such as Harry, Ron and Hermione in the Harry Potter series. For a series of novels, there are usually three books rather than four.
Weather prediction
As we have a further understanding of nature, we come to realize that it can be explained through math. Math plays an important role in weather prediction.
Every day, supercomputers process thousands of observations from Earth, including air pressure, water levels, temperature, and wind speed. These observations are presented in data (数据). Using different mathematical methods, these supercomputers analyze (分析) the data and predict global weather patterns.
So, don’t make math just appear on students’ homework.

2 . If you ask 10 students which subject he or she hates most, 9 of them will answer “Math”. No matter which country you visit, no matter which grade you are in, you may not learn Art, Biology, Chemistry or Chinese, but you always learn Math. Why do so many students hate Math and yet cannot avoid learning it at school?
Jenny Sanders, a high school student in California, asks “What good do we get from learning Math? We can use computers to calculate (计算) numbers and we can use computers to store information. I think learning Math at school is a waste of time.”
However, there is much more to Math than just learning to add and subtract numbers. In fact, Math is not so much about calculation because it is about learning to think logically (逻辑地) and working out problems. Of course, Jenny was right that we can use computers to do calculations, but if we can’t think logically, how could we know how to use the computer? In short, computers are only tools when solving problems.
For example, imagine you are a cook and must prepare dinner for 100 people. How should you divide your resources so that you can get the job done fastest and best? To think logically will help you work out your problems in a better way.

7 . Good afternoon. My name is Susanna. I come from America. I am a junior high school student. I will talk to you about the lives of American students in school.
In America, students usually get up at 6:30. After getting up, they often run for half an hour in the morning. When the class starts at 8 A. m., students need to learn some subjects. They learn English, Chinese, math, science, biology, music and art.
The students eat lunch at school at 12 o’clock. They have many kinds of food to eat, such as meat, vegetables, fruit, bread and so on, but hot dogs and hamburgers are their favorites.
Students have a short rest after lunch. The first class in the afternoon starts at 1:30 and school is over at 3:00.
After school, they always self-study and do their homework until 6:00 in the afternoon.
From 6 to 8 o’clock, they play games, exercise, read, write, draw and do other activities. They go to bed at nine in the evening. They sleep about nine hours a day. The students all think that their school life is very interesting.
That’s all. Thank you.

Nowadays more and more teenagers join the science clubs in schools. Li Jing and Liu Yan are two girls from Hubei. Their favorite school subject is science, and they want to make a weather balloon. They have

Now, the two girls are making a bigger team and ready for their next try.
9 . Two months ago, I asked a group of kids in a school, “Why do we have to study math or other subjects? Your parents also studied these things, but are they using them?” They must be surprised when they are asked this question.
Take this as an example. When you go to a gym, you do some exercise. Maybe you lift weights or do something else. Why do you do that? The reason why you do exercise is to build your strength and improve your health.
Similarly, the reason why you study math or any other subject is that helps develop logical thinking (逻辑思维), and helps you make sense of the world. By studying, you are able to build mental models (心智模型) about the world, so that you can deal with situations more smartly than a monkey would be.
Learning to your mind is like exercising to your body. If you want to keep healthy and make your body strong, you should do exercise often. So if you want to improve your intelligence (智力), you should try your best to study hard on every subject. Besides, something that you are studying may seem useless now. But when you need to use it some day, you will regret if you cannot use it because you don’t study it well now.
That is my answer to this question. Kids should be encouraged to ask more about these questions and learn math and other subjects well so that they will become good at thinking.
1. Whom does the writer take as an example when asking students why they study math?2. Why do you take exercise?
3. What can you get by studying according to Paragraph 3?
4. Do you think it is useful to learn rnath? Why or why not? Write 30 words or more.
10 . ①At school, students usually learn many subjects in the classroom like English, math and so on. Now there is a new one in some schools—school gardening (园艺). It is an outdoor (户外) subject. In the gardening class, teachers teach students different kinds of vegetables and how to grow (种) them. Then students work in groups.
②________ Why? Because they can have much fun in this class. They don’t have to sit at their desks in the classroom all day. They can get out, get their hands dirty, do things with their own (自己的) hands and relax.
③It’s also fun to get something to eat and see. In some schools, students like to grow carrots and tomatoes. It’s always interesting for them to get a carrot or a tomato, wash it and eat it right in the garden. In some schools, students like to grow flowers (花). When it’s spring, all the flowers come out and they’re really beautiful. Students like to walk and talk in the beauty. That’s their favorite thing to do after busy hours of work.
④Only fun from the classes? Of course not. Students can learn something, too. Keeping a school garden is difficult and all the students in the group need to come and help. This teaches students teamwork. Also, some vegetables are easy to grow, but others need a long time. This teaches students they need to wait (等待) before they get the things they want.
⑤There may (可能) be many other good things about school gardening. But one thing is for sure—students really love having outdoor classes.
1. The underlined word “one” in Paragraph 1 refers to (代指) “________”.A.school | B.subject | C.student | D.classroom |
A.The students really love this subject. |
B.The students don’t love this subject. |
C.This subject is very boring. |
D.This subject takes students much time. |
A.the students have fun in the gardening classes |
B.all the vegetables need a long time to grow |
C.students may ask schools to have more outdoor subjects |
D.the garden in the school is very big and beautiful |
A. | B. | C. | D. |
