If you ask 10 students which subject he or she hates most, 9 of them will answer “Math”. No matter which country you visit, no matter which grade you are in, you may not learn Art, Biology, Chemistry or Chinese, but you always learn Math. Why do so many students hate Math and yet cannot avoid learning it at school?
Jenny Sanders, a high school student in California, asks “What good do we get from learning Math? We can use computers to calculate (计算) numbers and we can use computers to store information. I think learning Math at school is a waste of time.”
However, there is much more to Math than just learning to add and subtract numbers. In fact, Math is not so much about calculation because it is about learning to think logically (逻辑地) and working out problems. Of course, Jenny was right that we can use computers to do calculations, but if we can’t think logically, how could we know how to use the computer? In short, computers are only tools when solving problems.
For example, imagine you are a cook and must prepare dinner for 100 people. How should you divide your resources so that you can get the job done fastest and best? To think logically will help you work out your problems in a better way.

Socializing is as important as your grade. If you just study all the time and don’t socialize, your life won’t be wonderful. So, how does one socialize with students in the US?
Lots of high schools often have soccer games during the autumn term. I didn’t know anything about soccer, but I joined some of the soccer games in order to have fun with my friends. I thought I could learn the rules from others. However, to my surprise, some American students don’t even know the rules but still go to the games in order to socialize. They cheer for the soccer players and have fun together.
The other common way to socialize is to join after-school clubs. You can choose clubs that you are interested in and make a lot of new friends. For example, one of my friends started a sketch (素描) club. I was interested in sketching. So I joined it. We soon became friends with each other.

The cafe in America has tried to encourage customers (顾客) to be more polite in a new way. The cafe offers rewards to those who are polite to others. There is a sign outside the cafe. It says different prices for a cup of coffee depending on how polite the customer is. Longjing tea leaves are famous for their colour, taste and shape.
“You have to touch the leaves with your hands to feel how much water is being removed(去除),” Fan said. “If too much is removed, the leaves will break into pieces; if not enough is removed, the tea will taste bitter(苦的).”

These days, however, more people are using machines to do the job. “It’s easier, but the quality is not as good,” Fan said. “Machine-made tea floats longer in water and tastes bitter.”
In March this year, when President Xi Jinping visited Hangzhou, he watched Fan roast tea. Fan changed the strength and movement of his hands as he roasted leaves. Xi later said, “The things made by two palms(手掌)cannot be replaced(代替)by modern technology.”
Fan is now teaching some young men. His son, a 27-year-old college graduate(大学毕业生), is one of them. “It’s a tradition. We need to pass it down,” he said.
