Dear Laura,
Thanks for your message. Yes, I’m having a great time on my student exchange program in France. I was a bit nervous before I arrived here, but there was no reason to be. My host family is really nice. They go out of their way to make me feel at home. The grandmother has a teenage granddaughter about my age. She’s really kind and she always talks to me in French to help me practice. You wouldn’t believe how quickly my French has improved because of that.
My biggest challenge is learning how to behave at the dinner table. As you can imagine, things are very different from the way they are at home. For example, you shouldn’t put your bread on your plate. You should put it on the table! I thought that was pretty strange at first, but now I’m used to it. Another example is that you shouldn’t eat anything with your hands except bread, not even fruit. Another thing is it’s impolite to say that you’re full. If you don’t want any more food, you should just say, “That was delicious.” Also, you shouldn’t put your elbows (肘部) on the table. I have to say that I find it difficult to remember everything, but I’m gradually getting used to it. I don’t find French customs (习俗) so strange any more.
I’ll write again soon and tell you more about my life in France. Hope you’re having a good school year.
Yours,
Wang Kun

Martin Albert Haase developed a deep interest in Chinese culture as a child. The Canadian enjoyed practising tai chi with his mother. He also showed an interest in TCM (中医). After graduating from high school, he entered the Oshio College of Acupuncture & Herbology in Victoria. His teacher then was from Hunan.
“He taught us many interesting things about Hunan, like the great herbalist doctor Zhang Zhongjing. He also told me that if I wanted to really understand Chinese medicine, I must go to China, so I came to Hunan,” said Haase.
Haase came to study at the Hunan University of Chinese Medicine (HUCM) in Changsha in 2007. Zhong Huan, a professor at HUCM, said that he really liked the Canadian student. “He speaks up in class and often expresses creative ideas,” Zhong said, adding that Haase always asked plenty of questions and attended academic conferences.
After spending more than 15 years in Changsha, Haase speaks good Chinese. He has a deep understanding of TCM, which he calls a treasure of Chinese civilizaion (文明). Haase also likes to practise kung fu and tai chi, which he studies under Zou Zequn, a famous tai chi master in Hunan. Haase practises kung fu and tai chi in a park near his home every morning to keep in shape.
Haase often talks about TCM with his friends. He said that many friends who used to be dubious (怀疑的) about TCM have now changed their attitude towards it. He said that if he decides to return to Victoria, he plans to open a clinic to spread the knowledge of TCM and Chinese culture. He also hopes to introduce kung fu and tai chi to more people to help them build their bodies.

6 . A group of students and teachers from the U.S recently attended a study tour to Hebei. The students from Muscatine High School are part of a China program that will invite 50,000 American youths to China within five years for exchanges and study. They are the second group from the school. North China’s Hebei Province and the U.S. state of Iowa signed their sister-state relationship in 1983.
On Sunday, Ann Castle, along with 31 classmates and eight teachers, took part in a study tour in Hebei from April 19 to 22, 2024. The students from both schools formed one-on-one friendly partnerships.
Ann Castle visited the home of Zhang Xinyi, a senior student at Shijiazhuang Foreign Language School. Before this, Ann Castle kept herself in learning Chinese Wushu, watching traditional Chinese dances in a park, and trying popular Chinese food. In Zhang’s bedroom, the two girls found many common topics of interest. Pipa, a traditional Chinese musical instrument particularly attracted Castle’s attention. “This instrument has been in China for 2,000 years. It’s similar to a guitar but a bit harder to learn,” Zhang told her. After Castle expressed her willing to have a try, Zhang helped her put on the pipa fingernails and shared some playing techniques. Soon, the sound of pipa filled the room. They also tasted tea and desserts, looked through family photo albums, and shared stories about their families. Everything looked so beautiful. “They’ve been very warm-hearted and friendly. It’s been an unforgettable experience,” said Castle.
Teachers and students from Shijiazhuang Foreign Language School prepared a welcome concert for the Americans filled with Chinese elements. The American students also learned an ancient Chinese poem, practiced ping pong, made dumplings, planted friendship trees and visited the Great Wall. Colin Millage, a student from America, said having a tree together with his Chinese friend is more than a friendship between them. It is a friendship between the two nations.
“We hoped the students from both countries would have enough opportunity to communicate with and affect each other during the period of just over three days,” said Liu Feng, the headteacher from China. According to Scott Castle, the headteacher from America, several meetings were especially held to choose the exchange students “I have great hope for the future with these kids and the kids they’ve been working with.”

The city I stayed in was Perth. When I arrived at the airport, the family I would stay with was waiting for me there. At the school, students had to wear school uniforms (校服), and we couldn’t wear jewelry (首饰). Luckily, everything went well. The teachers were nice and the students were friendly.
The most exciting time of my term in Australia was with 41 other exchange students from different countries. We all cried on our last day. We packed (打包) our things, exchanged e-mail addresses and said goodbye to each other.
I really learned a lot from my exchange experience.

Pakistani (巴基斯坦人) Hidayat Ullah, 29, is studying for his PhD degree in biochemistry at Dalian Medical University in Dalian, Liaoning province, and has found studying and living in China to be pleasant. “China is like our second homeland. People here are quite friendly and supportive,” he said.
In the first year working in a lab in Dalian, Ullah published a research paper in the famous international biochemistry magazine Molecules. His article has been cited (引用) many times, which makes him well known in his field. His second research paper will come out soon.
Ullah attributes (归因于) his achievements to the highly-developed skills he got at the lab and great support from the teachers, his Chinese partners, and international classmates he has ever met.
“Dalian Medical University is famous in my country for medical studies. I am very thankful that the China government scholarship helped me to realize my dream of studying here,” he said.
The university began receiving international students in English medical education in 2004. Now over 1,200 international students from 81 countries are studying here, including 97 from Pakistan. With a growing number of graduates from 119 countries, the university continues to receive students who are trying to achieve a high-quality medical education in English.
Ullah arrived in Dalian in 2019. During a connecting flight through Urumqi, Xinjiang, he felt the hospitality of the Chinese people. “I couldn’t imagine that a stranger at the airport would buy water for me, even invite me for lunch, when he knew I couldn’t pay by mobile phone,” he recalled. “My first feeling of China was really great.”
