Dear Laura,

Thanks for your message. Yes, I’m having a great time on my student exchange program in France. I was a bit nervous before I arrived here, but there was no reason to be. My host family is really nice. They go out of their way to make me feel at home. The grandmother has a teenage granddaughter about my age. She’s really kind and she always talks to me in French to help me practice. You wouldn’t believe how quickly my French has improved because of that.

My biggest challenge is learning how to behave at the dinner table. As you can imagine, things are very different from the way they are at home. For example, you shouldn’t put your bread on your plate. You should put it on the table! I thought that was pretty strange at first, but now I’m used to it. Another example is that you shouldn’t eat anything with your hands except bread, not even fruit. Another thing is it’s impolite to say that you’re full. If you don’t want any more food, you should just say, “That was delicious.” Also, you shouldn’t put your elbows (肘部) on the table. I have to say that I find it difficult to remember everything, but I’m gradually getting used to it. I don’t find French customs (习俗) so strange any more.

I’ll write again soon and tell you more about my life in France. Hope you’re having a good school year.

Yours,

Wang Kun

Arbor Day in Different Countries

Arbor Day in China

In 1915, Chinese Arbor Day was set on April 5, Qingming Festival. In order to commemorate Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s death, Tree Planting Day was changed to March 12 in 1928. In February 1979, Chinese government made a resolution that March 12 would be taken as Chinese Tree Planting Day, requiring the whole country to carry out tree-planting activities on this day and support the construction(建设) of forestry. Since 2020, it has been made clear by law that March 12 is Arbor Day every year. Tree-planting in the spring has become a bit of tradition for the Chinese.

                                                                              Chart II

This Year, Chinese President Xi Jinping and other leaders planted trees during a voluntary tree planting activity in Beijing. It is the 11th year that Xi has taken part in the tree planting activity. He called on people across the country for tree planting during this season of growth to work for a beautiful China.

Digging holes, watering trees, Xi planted different types of trees. While planting trees, Xi expected young students around him to love work and become healthy and wise people with skills and energy. “A tree must be kept upright at the very beginning of its growth,” he said. “Just like raising children, a child must be educated to be upright as well at a very early age to avoid going wrong.”

【推荐2】Zheng Lin is a Junior 3 student in Shijiazhuang, Hebei. Ealier this month, Zheng and his classmates stood on the street with a box asking people for donations (捐款). Later they gave the money they got to the poor students in their school.

Many Chinese students raise money to help people in need. Most of the time, they hold a box and ask for donations on the street or in the park. Or they sell things like old books and CDs. Those students have done a great job so far. The money helps the students in poor areas like Yunnan and Gansu with new clothes, pens and pencils.

Teenagers in the US make donations, too. But they raise money in a different way — they raise money by doing something for others. For example, they sell home-made food or play musical concerts in their neighbourhood to raise money.

“Chinese students like to wait for people to donate, or sell things that they buy with their parents’ money.” says Ge Daoshun, an expert. “While US kids get donations and give people something useful in return.”

Ge says Chinese teenagers should learn to raise money in the US kids’ way. “That way, they can show their talents and practise communication. More importantly, they can learn every coin counts (有价值). They have to work hard to get a donation.”

【推荐3】Food as Communication

We usually understand when someone speaks or writes to us, and many gestures and facial expressions have meanings, too. But have you ever considered what and   how we eat as a form of communication? In many cultures, people sit together and share food with each other, which is a common tradition that can promote (促进) unity(统一,和谐) and trust. Food can also play an important role in a family or culture’s celebrations. The foods we eat—and when and how we eat them—are often special to   a particular culture or may even differ between areas within one country.

In most cultures, bread represents delicious food. It is also one of the most commonly shared foods in the world. Sharing bread is a common symbol ( 象 征 ) of companionship and togetherness. In fact, the word companion comes from the Latin roots com- (together) and panis (bread). In many cultures, people also celebrate birthdays and marriages with decorated cakes that are cut and shared among the guests. Early forms of cake were simply a kind of bread, so this tradition has its roots in the custom of sharing bread.

There are foods like bread in other cultures. In Greece, people share a special cake called vasilopita. A coin is baked into the cake, which stands for success in the New Year for the person who receives it. Most of the foods eaten during the Chinese New Year have many different meanings. Sometimes this is based on their shapes. For example, long noodles symbolize long life. The symbolism can also be based on the sound of the word in Chinese. For example, people give out oranges because the word for “orange” sounds like the word for “wealth”. In many cultures, round foods such as grapes, bread, and moon cakes are eaten at welcome celebrations to symbolize family unity.

Food is basic and necessary for life, so it is not surprising that it is such an important part of different cultures around the world. The food people eat during celebrations may have a long history and can symbolize many things, but sharing food is one custom that almost all humans have in common.
