Gretel comes from Austria. She’s eighteen years old. She’s going to stay with the Clark family for a year. Gretel has come to England because she wants to improve her English. She helps Mrs. Clark in the house and goes to English classes in her spare time.
Gretel hasn’t been in England long and everything is strange to her. She often compares the life in London with that in Vienna. Something is nicer in London, while other things aren’t so nice. For example, shops are bigger in London than those in Vienna and there are many different kinds of shops. But it’s more expensive to enjoy yourself in London. It’s expensive to have a meal at a restaurant or to go to a movie.
Gretel likes English people. She thinks they are kind and often ready to help others. But English people don’t speak English the way she heard in Vienna. Sometimes she can’t understand them at all. Gretel has got used to (习惯) many things already, but she can’t get used to breakfast in England. She often says, “Fruit juice, porridge, eggs, tea, toast and butter! How can you finish all the food so early in the day?”

10 . More than twenty-nine thousand foreign exchange students went to American high schools last year. They came from one hundred and nine countries. Foreign exchange students can learn more about a culture and its people. They make new friends and experience new places. But they can also experience problems.
In the past, exchange students knew little about their host families before meeting them. But today, exchange students may know a lot about their host family before they leave home. E-mails and cell phones make it easier for the students to keep in touch with their host family and their own family. Students can also get along well with their host family and live on their own. However, new students may feel lost at first in a huge building when they move from class to class. Changing classrooms may also be a new experience for exchange students. In their own countries, teachers move from room to room, not the students.
To become an exchange student at an American high school, students must be between the ages of 15 and 18. And they must agree to accept the rules of the exchange program (项目) and their host families. Host families do not get paid, but they get a fifty dollar tax deduction (课税减免) for each month when the student lives in their home. Many exchange students say the experience taught them a lot about the world and about themselves.
