Growing up in the US, I always wanted to experience different culture. The chance came when I was 15. After a few months of planning and preparing, I was ready to spend the second term of my first year of senior high school (高中) as an exchange (交换) student in Australia.
The city I stayed in was Perth. When I arrived at the airport, the family I would stay with was waiting for me there. At the school, students had to wear school uniforms (校服), and we couldn’t wear jewelry (首饰). Luckily, everything went well. The teachers were nice and the students were friendly.
The most exciting time of my term in Australia was with 41 other exchange students from different countries. We all cried on our last day. We packed (打包) our things, exchanged e-mail addresses and said goodbye to each other.
I really learned a lot from my exchange experience.

“The storm,” Tom says. “It’s the same storm as Thursday night. Let’s go to the apple tree. Maybe you can go home!”
Jan follows Tom down the road then she remembers something.
“The time capsule!”
Tom shows her the biscuit tin under his jacket. “I’ve got it.”

“Yes.”
Tom uses his hands to dig a hole and buries the time capsule.
Jan wants to give Tom something. But Tom says, “I don’t want anything. The important thing for you is to get home.”
“I’ll never forget you, Tom. Thanks.”
“Bye, Jan. Look for me in the future. Promise?”
“I promise.”
Then he turns and runs back. After a sudden flash of lightning and a loud crash of thunder, Jan’s back in the garden of her house in Hampton Street.

By the time the sun was high, he was very hot and wished for a cool place to rest and have some food. As he walked along, he found some shade (树荫), and by it were some fine wild strawberries.
“How good these will be with my bread and butter,” thought George. He picked up all of the strawberries. As he was lifting the first strawberry to his mouth, he remembered his sick mother, alone in her dark, cold room in the village.
With this in mind, he put the strawberry back again. “Shall I save them for her?” he asked himself. He thought how refreshing they would be for her, yet was still looking at them with a longing (渴望的) eye.
“I will eat half, and take the other half to her,” he said. He divided them into two heaps (堆) but each heap looked so small. He put them together again.
“I will only eat one,” he thought. But, as he again lifted it to his mouth, he saw that he had taken the finest and he put it back.
When the sun was beginning to go down, George set out for home. How happy he felt, then he had all his strawberries for his sick mother.
He heard his mother’s voice calling him. “Is that you, George? I am glad you have come back. I am thirsty and am longing for some tea.”
George ran to her and joyfully offered his wild strawberries.

Lightning can cause serious problems on the ground. It can cause fires, destroy buildings, and kill people. The damage from lightning costs billions of dollars every year. Scientists have been trying to find a way to protect buildings from lightning for a long time.
Now, the best way is by putting metal rods (杆) on the buildings. They are connected to the ground and can safely guide the electricity into the ground. ★ If a building is very large, it needs a lot of lightning rods. Some buildings—such as airports—are so large that it’s difficult to protect the whole building using lightning rods.
Another idea is to use lasers to guide lightning. It isn’t new. Scientists have been working on the idea for over 20 years. They have successfully guided lightning with lasers inside a laboratory. But scientists haven’t been able to make it outside until recently. Scientist Matteo Clerici wasn’t part of the experiment, but he also studies guiding electricity. He said, “The fact that they managed to do it in an outdoor environment is really a very big step.”
Although they have made great progress, the laser still didn't guide the lightning as far as the scientists would like. To protect buildings from most lightning, lasers will have to guide the lightning for a much longer distance (距离). The laser is also very dear. The scientists say it costs about $2 billion. It will probably take 10 or more years before a laser is truly able to protect large buildings.
1. Why do scientists try to change the path of lightning?A.To collect electricity. | B.To avoid great losses. |
C.To test special lasers. | D.To save building costs. |

He helped her look for the doll, but they couldn’t find it. Kafka told her to meet him there the next day and they would look for it again.
The next day, when they still didn’t find the doll, Kafka gave the girl letter “written” by the doll that said, “Please don’t cry. I have gone on a trip to see the world. I’m going to write to you about my adventures.”
Thus (由此) a story that continued to the end of Kafka’s life began.
When they met every time, Kafka read aloud the letters (which he had written, of course) of adventures that the girl found exciting. Finally, Kafka read her a letter in which the doll said it had finally returned to Berlin. Then, he gave her a doll that he had bought.
“This does not look like my doll at all,” she said. Kafka handed her another letter that said, “It is my trips that have changed me.” The girl took the doll home happily. A year later, Kafka died.
Many years later, the girl found a letter hidden inside the doll. It said, “Everything you love is very likely to be lost, but in the end, love will return in a different way.”

When I was in Grade 9, my father took a new position in Ohio, so my family moved there and rented a house. My mother told me that I could have a gift for my new life. What I wanted most was a new bicycle. But I knew that my family couldn’t afford one, so I finally asked for a nightstand with lockable drawers. And that was what I got.
After we took a secondhand nightstand home, I decided to paint it to make it look better. When I pulled the drawers out, I felt something stuck to the back of the lowest drawer. And guess what I found? It turned out to be a Ziploc bag with some papers in it!
When I opened the bag, I found a bunch of ten-and-twenty-dollar bills wrapped(包裹) in the papers! I just found a treasure! Was I the luckiest boy ever? With this money I could buy the coolest bicycle. Maybe I even had enough money to get a car for my parents. How exciting!
“Wait, is this some kind of joke?” I said aloud then. Maybe this was fake (假的) money, but it looked pretty real. I went ahead and read the papers, and it turned out that some old lady was leaving her savings to her family.
All this was too strange. My mind was going crazy.
My mother was knocking on my bedroom door. I quickly closed the drawer with the money in it.
“How is your painting job coming along? Is everything all right?” she asked.
“I’m okay,” I lied. “I’ll let you know when it’s ready.”
When my mother left, I lay on my bed, looking at the ceiling and thinking about this past week. First, I didn’t make the basketball team. Then, I failed the math test. Finally, I found this money on my birthday—the only good news during a long time. It wouldn’t be too bad for me to keep it, right? What about keeping some and returning the rest? However, I didn’t feel good about it.
“Somebody helps me with this!” I begged. But I didn’t need someone else to give me the answer. I already knew right from wrong. That’s why I failed the math test even though I could have cheated. I decided not to fail this test. It was a test of honor. My honor.
1. What did the writer want most for his new life?A.A wallet. | B.A nightstand. | C.A car. | D.Á bicycle. |

Jade | Taking a chance will be the best thing you’ve ever done! I was feeling unsure about moving from Cologne to Vienna as I thought it couldn’t get any better — but it really did. The more you do, the easier it will become! At first, I found listening to or speaking German all the time tiring, but the more I did, the less tired I became. |
Eric | You appreciate your home cuisine so much. The phrase, “You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone”, is so sure. I found myself dreaming about classic English foods like Marmite, Yorkshire puddings and Cadbury’s chocolate. |
Elsa | Hearing your native language sounds magical. Even hearing the self-checkout voice in English at the supermarket made me feel nostalgic(乡愁的). |
Amanda | Keeping up with both languages is difficult. I found myself forgetting English words. We’re all the same. I’ve met people from all over the world and I’ve learned that regardless of different colors of the skin or nationalities, we all have kindness within us. |
Sue | Language learning is hard. There’s no so much vocabulary and then there come slang and dialect. But it’s so worth it. It’s the most satisfying feeling to understand and participate in a conversation. |

Dear James and Susan,
I am writing to you again because I am at home in bed. I have a cold and I am unable to go to school. I really have more than a cold. It’s the flu. I’ve got a fever and a serious headache as well. I lost my appetite and I find food tasteless. In addition, I’m always thirsty, probably as a result of the fever. But, with a lot of effort, I’m writing a letter to you and another to Helen.
The weather here in Toronto is horrible. I am sure the weather is much better in Hong Kong. Do you agree? The snow came a bit early this year and it was cold. There’s a foot of snow on the ground. It’s surprising to see kids cheerfully playing in the snow and building castles and snowmen this morning. A few of them made snowballs by pressing snow together and threw them at each other.
I’m going to have my examination soon. I’m extremely worried about it because I’m too sick to get out of bed and hold my text-books. What’s more, I haven’t attended lessons for nearly one week. I have to work hard to catch up with my classmates.
I have got a new mate recently. He’s on my bed. That is Bobby, our cat. Uncle Tom gave him to me as my birthday present. He is rather disobedient and he runs here and there from time to time. He’s much more energetic than me. However, I’m glad to have him with me at the moment.
Well, I am quite tired from writing this letter. I’ll finish here. Please write to me if you have time.
Give my regards to your Mom and Dad.
Best wishes
Joseph

But that’s not all! Many students might also be able to take part in a student exchange program. They are going to study abroad during their course, usually for a term or a year.
These programs are much more than a holiday—here are just a few of the benefits (好处).
① .
People from across the world take part in exchange programs—you might even meet some you like! Meeting people from different places and with different views is a good way to learn more about the world. Some of the people you meet could become friends for life, while others might work with you in the future.
②
Companies are always looking for people with knowledge of other languages, and studying abroad is a great way to improve these skills. It will also allow you to experience another culture, adding to your global knowledge. And this is another thing that should look good on your resume (简历) after you finish your studies.
