________ Take the following as examples.

Traffic solutions

Do you know how the timing of traffic lights is decided to avoid traffic jams? Traffic engineers use special math models to set these timings. They are called traffic flow (流量) models. They consider the number of cars, zebra crossing, the time of day, and any events happening. With these models, engineers can work out the best timings for traffic lights in the city. Moreover, researchers are always trying to make these models better to prevent traffic jams more effectively.

Literature

UK scientist Sarah Hart presents some interesting thoughts about “three”. She said that the number has a special influence on Western literature and languages.

According to Hart, three sticks can create a triangle (三角形), the most basic stable (稳定的) structure. With “a sense of strength and completeness (完整)”, she said, “three” becomes common in our languages. Many common expressions in English come as three words, such as “ready, set, go”. Some nursery (童谣) rhymes have a word repeated three times, such as “row, row, row your boat”. In stories, there are usually three main characters, such as Harry, Ron and Hermione in the Harry Potter series. For a series of novels, there are usually three books rather than four.

Weather prediction

As we have a further understanding of nature, we come to realize that it can be explained through math. Math plays an important role in weather prediction.

Every day, supercomputers process thousands of observations from Earth, including air pressure, water levels, temperature, and wind speed. These observations are presented in data (数据). Using different mathematical methods, these supercomputers analyze (分析) the data and predict global weather patterns.

So, don’t make math just appear on students’ homework.

【推荐1】Starting from this fall term, students in primary and middle school will have at least one lesson every week to learn basic household skills such as cleaning and cooking.

Primary school students in first and second grades need to do basic cleaning, wash vegetables and peel fruit, and learn to raise one or two kinds of plants or small animals.

Third and fourth graders should clean their classrooms, wash their underwear, and know how to make cold dishes and use home appliances (电器).

Fifth and sixth graders should learn the skills of cooking two or three common dishes, such as fried eggs.

For middle school students, they are encouraged to cook three or four dishes all by themselves, learn how to make one or two kinds of traditional handicrafts (手工艺品), and experience one or two types of new technologies, modern service or volunteer work.

People welcomed such courses and some said, “It is necessary to teach young students basic skills.” Some regretted not learning such skills during their school days.

Yang Jianping, mother of a first grader in Beijing, strongly supports teaching students such courses. Yang often asks her son to help make simple dishes and has taken him to plant vegetables at his grandmother’s garden in the countryside during summer vacation.

“He is very interested in planting vegetables and asks to video chat with his grandmother to see the plants every day,” she said.

【推荐2】It happens to all of us. When it is the end of the term, your teacher will give you your report card. You look at it and your heart stops because you realize that your parents are going to be very angry. This is the classic case of a bad report card! There is nothing you can do to change the past. So, what do you do now?

A bad report card is something that almost all the students will experience at least once in their lives. Grades are how most schools evaluate (评价) students and they are pretty important. The problem is that we do not always get good grades we (or our parents) want. After a bad report card, it is important to figure out what to do next.

The first thing to do is to talk to your teacher. Find out how your grades were calculated. Was the problem a bad test, lack of participation (参与) in class, or a failure to complete homework? Next, if the problem is something you can solve on your own (such as not doing your homework), make a promise to change your behavior (行为)! However, if you have been studying hard and still got a bad grade, you probably need some help with your classes. Talk to your teacher and explain your situation. He or she will tell you where you can receive the extra help you need. Then make a careful plan of how you will improve your grades. Write down the plan and have it ready when you talk to your parents. That's a good way to make your parents less angry.

While all parents want their children to get good grades, most understand that not every report card will be perfect. The important thing is that you show your parents you have a plan to improve your grades for next time. Always remember, many of the world's most successful people failed many times before they became successful. They learned from their failures, you should too!

1. What is the problem with the grades?
A.Grades are sometimes incorrect.
B.It's important to get good grades.
C.We don't always get good grades we want.
D.Most schools evaluate students by using grades.
2. The underlined words “your situation” in the text probably mean “________.”
A.you feel worried that your parents must be angry with you
B.you have no idea about how your grades were calculated
C.you have made a promise to change some bad behaviour
D.you have been studying hard, but you still got bad grades
3. ________is a good way to make your parents less angry?
A.Telling your parents the test was too difficult for you
B.Explaining why you couldn't complete your homework on time
C.Understanding all parents want their children to get good grades
D.Showing your parents you have a careful plan to improve your grades
4. Why does the writer mention “successful people” in paragraph 4?
A.To compare successful people with unsuccessful people.
B.To describe whether they had good grades or bad grades.
C.To encourage students to become successful like those people.
D.To explain that even successful people fail from time to time.

‘Nerd camp’ makes learning fun

I have been going to the same summer camp since the fourth grade. It’s called the Center For Talented Youth (CTY, 天才少年营). I took a food science course (课程) in the first year, a fantasy writing course in the next and a forensic (法医的) science course after that. A few years later, I decided to try a new course offered by CTY at a college campus.

It was an essay-writing class at Sycamore College in New York. I flew to New York alone. I was very nervous to be away from my parents and my dog for three weeks, but I was also very excited.

Unlike other summer camps that are full of hiking, swimming and fun outdoor activities, CTY is a camp for nerds (书虫). It has activities such as “Star Wars battle” and “Harry Potter Q&A”. I fell in love with Sycamore’s campus in a small town called Saratoga Springs. I didn’t even feel the time passing there.

What I regret most is that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I will not be able to go back to camp. Although (虽然) it was just my first time going to camp on a college campus, it would also be my last.

3. The underlined word “nervous” means________.

5. What’s the passage mainly about?
A.CTY—a camp for nerds.
B.Fun summer camps.
