________ Take the following as examples.
Traffic solutions
Do you know how the timing of traffic lights is decided to avoid traffic jams? Traffic engineers use special math models to set these timings. They are called traffic flow (流量) models. They consider the number of cars, zebra crossing, the time of day, and any events happening. With these models, engineers can work out the best timings for traffic lights in the city. Moreover, researchers are always trying to make these models better to prevent traffic jams more effectively.
Literature
UK scientist Sarah Hart presents some interesting thoughts about “three”. She said that the number has a special influence on Western literature and languages.
According to Hart, three sticks can create a triangle (三角形), the most basic stable (稳定的) structure. With “a sense of strength and completeness (完整)”, she said, “three” becomes common in our languages. Many common expressions in English come as three words, such as “ready, set, go”. Some nursery (童谣) rhymes have a word repeated three times, such as “row, row, row your boat”. In stories, there are usually three main characters, such as Harry, Ron and Hermione in the Harry Potter series. For a series of novels, there are usually three books rather than four.
Weather prediction
As we have a further understanding of nature, we come to realize that it can be explained through math. Math plays an important role in weather prediction.
Every day, supercomputers process thousands of observations from Earth, including air pressure, water levels, temperature, and wind speed. These observations are presented in data (数据). Using different mathematical methods, these supercomputers analyze (分析) the data and predict global weather patterns.
So, don’t make math just appear on students’ homework.

Primary school students in first and second grades need to do basic cleaning, wash vegetables and peel fruit, and learn to raise one or two kinds of plants or small animals.
Third and fourth graders should clean their classrooms, wash their underwear, and know how to make cold dishes and use home appliances (电器).
Fifth and sixth graders should learn the skills of cooking two or three common dishes, such as fried eggs.
For middle school students, they are encouraged to cook three or four dishes all by themselves, learn how to make one or two kinds of traditional handicrafts (手工艺品), and experience one or two types of new technologies, modern service or volunteer work.
People welcomed such courses and some said, “It is necessary to teach young students basic skills.” Some regretted not learning such skills during their school days.
Yang Jianping, mother of a first grader in Beijing, strongly supports teaching students such courses. Yang often asks her son to help make simple dishes and has taken him to plant vegetables at his grandmother’s garden in the countryside during summer vacation.
“He is very interested in planting vegetables and asks to video chat with his grandmother to see the plants every day,” she said.

You look at it and your heart stops because you realize that your parents are going to be very angry. This is the classic case of a bad report card! There is nothing you can do to change the past. So, what do you do now?
A bad report card is something that almost all the students will experience at least once in their lives. Grades are how most schools evaluate (评价) students and they are pretty important. The problem is that we do not always get good grades we (or our parents) want. After a bad report card, it is important to figure out what to do next.
The first thing to do is to talk to your teacher. Find out how your grades were calculated. Was the problem a bad test, lack of participation (参与) in class, or a failure to complete homework? Next, if the problem is something you can solve on your own (such as not doing your homework), make a promise to change your behavior (行为)! However, if you have been studying hard and still got a bad grade, you probably need some help with your classes. Talk to your teacher and explain your situation. He or she will tell you where you can receive the extra help you need. Then make a careful plan of how you will improve your grades. Write down the plan and have it ready when you talk to your parents. That's a good way to make your parents less angry.
While all parents want their children to get good grades, most understand that not every report card will be perfect. The important thing is that you show your parents you have a plan to improve your grades for next time. Always remember, many of the world's most successful people failed many times before they became successful. They learned from their failures, you should too!

‘Nerd camp’ makes learning fun
I have been going to the same summer camp since the fourth grade. It’s called the Center For Talented Youth (CTY, 天才少年营). I took a food science course (课程) in the first year, a fantasy writing course in the next and a forensic (法医的) science course after that. A few years later, I decided to try a new course offered by CTY at a college campus.
It was an essay-writing class at Sycamore College in New York. I flew to New York alone. I was very nervous to be away from my parents and my dog for three weeks, but I was also very excited.
Unlike other summer camps that are full of hiking, swimming and fun outdoor activities, CTY is a camp for nerds (书虫). It has activities such as “Star Wars battle” and “Harry Potter Q&A”. I fell in love with Sycamore’s campus in a small town called Saratoga Springs. I didn’t even feel the time passing there.
What I regret most is that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I will not be able to go back to camp. Although (虽然) it was just my first time going to camp on a college campus, it would also be my last.

This is true. To be healthy, we must have enough sleep . Experts (专家)say that adults should get seven to eight hours of sleep a night. Teenagers need nine to ten hours . And school-aged children may need more than ten hours of sleep. Children who do not have enough sleep can’t do their work very well. They won’t be wise and they may not become wealthy!
We also need exercise. Walking , running, swimming and playing games are all exercise. Exercise keeps us strong .It also helps the blood to move around the body. This is very important. Our blood takes the nutrition from food to all parts of our body.
The head also needs blood. So exercise that moves the blood to our head helps us think better!

One cannot discuss Chinese music without mentioning the Chinese seven-string zither(弦), also known as the guqin, one of the four arts—along with go, calligraphy and painting. It first appeared over 3, 000 years ago and represents China’s solo musical instrument tradition.
At first, the guqin had only five strings, representing the five elements of metal, wood, water, fire and earth. Later, in the Zhou dynasty, King Wen of Zhou added a sixth string for his son. King Wu of Zhou, added a seventh string to encourage his army to fight with the Shang.
Ambience was important in playing the Chinese zither. Usually, it was practiced in quiet setting and never for public performance.
Ancient artists enjoyed performing by a stream in the mountains. The sound of the guqin mixed with the echoes(回音)from the mountains, until the musician found himself at one with nature. Playing it in snow was also a favorite pastime for ancient artists, who believed the instrument was the purest of its kind in the world. Also, a night with moonlight was considered ideal(理想的)for playing the guqin. Wang Wei(701—761), a highly talented man of the Tang dynasty, liked playing it in a bamboo forest on nights with moonlight most.
Guqin pieces are usually around three to eight minutes long, with the longest being Guangling Verse, which is 22 minutes long. Other famous pieces include Plum Blossoms in Three Movements(《梅花三弄》), Wild Geese Landing on the Sandbank(《平沙落雁》)and Eighteen Songs of a Nomad Flute(《胡笳十八拍》).
Now, there are fewer than one thousand well-trained guqin players and perhaps no more than fifty living masters. The original number of several thousand pieces has greatly reduced to only a hundred works by today. The guqin and its music was added to the list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity(人类非物质文化遗产)in 2003.

【推荐3】Braille is a special reading and writing system. People who are blind can use it to read by touch. In the Braille letters, raised dots(点) spell out words and numbers. High level Braille even uses short symbols for common words, like when someone texts “ttyl” instead of “talk to you later.”
Recently, researchers have discovered that some people who read Braille by touch use the same part of their brains to read as people who can see do. They studied the brains of blind readers as they touch-read Braille. If brains were organized based on which sense is at work, the researchers explained, the test would mostly find activity in the readers’ parietal lobes(顶叶)—an area of the brain connected with touch. Instead, the researchers also found activity in the area connected with sight.
How would touch information reach a brain area usually used to see? Researchers believe the process connects to our brains’ abilities to change. They explain that in people who are born blind, the area used for seeing goes unused. However, the brain quickly begins to recruit unused areas for new jobs, including language, hearing, and finally reading and math. It does this by forming new connections among the neurons(神经元). This can change how information reaches different areas in the brain.
This ability of our brains to reorganize after an injury(损伤) or other challenge is called plasticity. The brain is most plastic at birth. Research has shown that people born blind use the area of the brain connected with sight during Braille reading more than those who lost their sight later on. However, the brain seems to never lose the ability. A recent study showed that sighted people who read Braille skillfully also showed some activity in the area of the brain connected with sight. They only touched the Braille text without seeing it. It seems that our brains are good at breaking the rules and dealing with information in new ways.

Then the robots take the place of them at school. Through the robots, the children can hear their teachers and classmates. More importantly they feel less lonely while they are not at school.
A Norwegian company called No Isolation made the kind of robot. It is called AVI. AVI goes to school for a child who is not able to leave home. And the child’s classmates must help. They carry the robot between classes and put the robot on the child’s desk. It’s not difficult. At home, the child uses a computer or a phone to start the robot. Then he uses the same computer or phone to control (控制) the robot. At school, the robot becomes the eyes, ears and mouth of the child. The best part is that the child can even join in classroom activities. The robot has speakers, microphones and cameras. Those things make communication (交流) easy.
AVI looks like a human. The scientist says this is important. The robot should be a friend of children. It can’t just be a small camera and let someone put it in a place. With AVI’s help, people think that children who can’t go to school will feel happier while they are at home.

Many scientific fields study the strangest of the animal kingdom, like animals with a lot of eyes and bodies so different from our own. Art can help us experience these hard-to-imagine parts of the natural world and light new scientific discoveries.
Alia Payne, an art professor, came to the National Museum of Natural History to work with the live jellyfish (水母) collections. She always got the same question from visitors. “How do jellyfish stings (蜇刺) work?” She had the scientific answer but found it difficult to explain without a clear sight. An idea went through her mind. She built a 3D model of one of the stinging cells that visitors could touch. “I have always loved art for education.” said Payne. “We learn more easily when we have something to play with.”
While art helps people experience science. It also helps scientists understand the natural world. Dr Osborn, a zoologist at the museum, studies the surprising sea animals of the ocean’s largest habitat (栖息地)—the midwater. Midwater sea animals have special features to survive in their habitat, and Osborn’s research helps us understand what these animals look like. “So I started learning photography,” Osborn explained. “It was really important because these animals don’t look so great when they are put in the glass box in the museum’s collections.”
Artistic creativity provides a chance to show off the bright colours, special body shapes and good adaptations (适应性) of these animals to the museum’s scientists, visitors and the world. In turn, art connects scientists to their own creativity and helps with their scientific process (过程) and the communication of their discoveries. By joining science with imagination and storytelling, art helps show the beauty of the sea animals—even those fit for horror movies—and connects people with their curiosity for the strangeness of the animal kingdom.
1. What can we learn about art from Paragraph 1?A.It helps us catch the strangest animals. |
B.It can tell us a lot of stories about scientists. |
C.It can tell the differences between nature and science. |
D.It can provide us with a new view for exploring science. |

C.She wants to explain science in a simple way. | D.She hopes visitors can buy jellyfish in the museum. |
A.hoped to be famous | B.wanted to improve his work |
C.was curious about photography | D.tried to study the food for sea animals |
A.It helps them have more creativities. | B.It allows them to make friends with visitors. |
