In September 2019, a forest fire broke out in northern New South Wales in Australia. This fire lasted for more than four months. According to the news, it destroyed more than 2,000 houses and about 500 million animals have been killed. So far 26 people have died in this terrible fire. The news also shows that the smoke from the fire quickly spreads across the whole world.

Why did the fire break out? The windy, dry and hot weather was one of the reasons for it. But another one was human activities. For example, people have thrown cigarette ends in forests. They failed to follow the ban(禁令) and cooked food in the forest.

Actually, the fire and other fires throughout Australia are warnings from nature. They are not only for Australia, but also for the people in different countries in the world. They are supposed to draw people’s attention to environmental protection.

Now, many countries are trying their best to help protect the environment. For example, Shanghai of China introduced compulsory(强制性的) rules about sorting rubbish in 2019. In Japan, the medals for 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games will be made from materials which are collected from electronic waste. Countries around the world are working together to prevent global warming.

What should you do if a big fire happens at home? There is no much time to think. People need to act quickly. The following rules will be helpful:

Shout out

If you smell smoke or see fire, shout out “fire”! Shout as loudly as you can, because people may be asleep at night.

Call 119

Never try to put out a fire yourself, even if it is a very small one! Get help from your parents or call 119.

Keep down close to the floor

If there is a lot of smoke in your room, keep down close to the floor. There is less smoke down there. It is easier to breathe and see where you are going. Take a wet towel to cover your mouth and nose with it. And it can protect you from the smoke and fire.

Check the door

Check the door before you open it. Touch it with the back of your hand. If the door is cool, open it carefully. If the door is hot, do not open it.

Get out

If you can, get out of your home as quickly as you can. Do not stop to pick up anything. A fire can become very big in a few seconds!

Don’t use the lift

Never use the lift during a fire. Always use the stairs. A lift may stop at a floor where the fire is burning. It may also go wrong and keep you inside.

Don’t go back

Never go back into a building on fire! Even if you have left your pet or favorite toy inside, do not go back for it.
