They noticed that animals acted     2     (strange) in the hours before earthquakes. Even now people talk about dogs     3     won’t stop barking and cats going into hiding     4     an earthquake happens. Besides, strange behaviors (行为)     5     these aren’t limited to pets. People have also reported seeing chickens stop laying eggs, bees leaving     6     (they) beehives (蜂巢), and big groups of fish     7     (die) in the hours before a       8     (nature) disaster hits.

The     9     (true) is that we aren’t sure whether animals might be able to sense earthquakes before they happen. However, one thing is for sure that more research       10     (carry) out to find out the answer. Animals may be the key to predicting earthquakes before they happen and help save many lives. That’s what we want.

【推荐3】The biggest wildfire in 20 years in Spain's Catalonia region began on June 26. Fed by strong winds, the flames     1    (spread) quickly. It took more than 500 firefighters to put it     2    .

In recent years, heat waves are far more likely to happen because of the     3    (change) climate. And hot, dry conditions also contribute to     4    (make) massive fires.

The wildfire problem is partly a result of     5    (decade) of prevention. Fire plays a natural role in a healthy forest. The forest will recover, and the trees     6     grow back will likely be more adapted to the     7    (hot) and more arid conditions.     8     to protect human habitation, officials have tried to allow almost no fires to burn. To prevent megafires, experts say, the authorities have to let forests burn     9    (natural)—and sometimes even set fires     10     purpose.

Fire services are learning to adapt to climate change and work more with controlled burns. But to make the switch from fire prevention to "fire management" might be the work of a generation or more.
