He needed to get up before sunrise every morning to help his father on the farm. During sunrise he would take a break and climb up on the fence along the side of the farm. He could see a house with golden windows. “If they could afford golden windows, then there must be other nice things inside the house.” He imagined how great it would be to live there. Then he promised himself, “Some day I will go there and see this wonderful place.”
One morning, his father would go to the town and told him to stay at home for a rest. Knowing that this was his chance, he took a sandwich and headed across the field towards the house with the golden windows.
As the afternoon went on, he began to realize how wrong he was. The house was much farther than he had expected. As he went near the house, he saw no golden windows but instead a place in bad need of a painting. A small girl very close to his age came out of the poor house and stood by the broken fence. He asked her if she had seen the house with the golden windows. The girl said, “Sure, I know.” And invited him to sit on the porch (门廊 ). As he sat there, he looked back from where he just came. ①“Mirror (镜子), mirror on the wall, what will I look like in ten years? Will I look pretty if I eat junk food and don’t exercise?”
②To get the answer, you might need a special mirror. French Scientists invented (发明) one. In this mirror, you can never see what you look like today. What you see is what you’ll look like in the future.
③“The mirror is unusual, although it looks just like the one in your bathroom,” says Martin Illsley, one of the scientists.
④“It has a camera inside to take your pictures. Just stand in front of the mirror, and it will work,” suggests Martin. “You also need to tell the mirror what you eat and how you exercise. In this way you put your information into the tape inside the mirror. After a few minutes, the special software in it will produce a future vision (形象) of you on the mirror.”
⑤What will bad habits bring you five or ten years later? This mirror may just show you. If you don’t want it to become true, give up your bad habits right now! Remember that mirrors can not help you keep healthy but you can.
⑥With the development of technology, there will be more inventions like the special mirror. Maybe a map will show you where you will live and work. And a clock will tell you how long you will live in this world. But I still believe that you decide future by yourself. Take action now and make a better future!

“No, father,” replied George, hanging down his head.
“Why not, my son?”
“Because it is so difficult, father. I am sure that I shall never learn it. Besides, I could not remember it after I had learned it, my memory is so bad.”
“If I promise you a holiday on the thirtieth of the month after next, do you think you would forget the date?”
“No, I am pretty sure that I should not.”
“You are very good at skating, and flying a kite, and playing a ball, aren’t you?” “Yes, father.”
“And yet you cannot learn your lesson! My dear boy, you are deceiving(欺骗)yourself. You can learn as well as anyone, if you will only try.”
“But have I not tried, father?” asked George.
“Well, try again. Come, for this afternoon lay aside that kite you are making, and give another effort to get your lesson ready. To show you that it only requires perseverance, I will tell you a story:
One of the dullest boys at a village school, more than thirty years ago, went up to repeat his lesson one morning, and, as usual, did not know it. “Go to your seat!” said the teacher angrily.
“If you don’t pay more attention to your lessons, you will never be fit for anything.” The poor boy went back to his seat.
“It is of no use. I cannot learn.” he said in a low voice to the boy who sat near him. “You must try hard,” replied the kind-hearted boy.
“I have tried, but it is of no use, I may just as well give up at once.” “Try again, Henry!”
The boy got courage from these two words. Soon, to his surprise and pleasure, the whole lesson was remembered!”
“And was it you, father?” asked his son, looking up into the face of his kind parent. “Yes, my child. That dull boy was your own father in his early years.”
“Then I will try again.” said George.
“I learned the lesson, father!” replied the boy, “I can say every word of it.” “Did you find it hard work?”
“Not so very hard, after I had once made up my mind that I would learn it.”
“May you never forget this lesson, my son!” said Mr. Prentice, “You now get the secret of success. It lies in never stopping to think about a task being difficult or tiresome, but in going on, with a fixed determination to succeed.”

The six-year study focused on several plants, including tomato plants. The researchers put the plants in a soundproof (隔音的) greenhouse, then set up microphones about 10 centimeters from each one. The team recorded the sounds made by the plants in different conditions.
The study found that when plants are healthy, they make regular clicking and popping noises. However, when they had their stems (茎) cut or hadn’t been watered, the noises came in very quick bursts. The sounds were very high-pitched (声调高的), so they couldn’t be heard by human ears. Professor Lilach Hadany, who worked on the study, told the Guardian newspaper, “When these plants are in good shape, they produce less than one sound per hour, but when stressed they make many more, sometimes 30 to 50 per hour.” On average, “thirsty” tomato plants made 35 sounds an hour. When plant stems were cut, tomato plants made an average of 25 sounds in the following hour.
Using the recordings, the researchers trained a computer program. The program could identify the plant and the reason that it had become stressed. The program recognized 70% of the sounds correctly. One day, perhaps it could be used to look after plants better on farms by finding out when they need more water.
If farmers could understand these sounds, they could give water to the plants that need it most. As climate change causes more droughts (干旱), this would be important information for farmers. The sounds that drought-stressed plants make could be used in precision agriculture (精准农业).
