文章大意:本文主要介绍了汽车的发明史。

【推荐1】Like the light bulb, there are different stories about cars inventing. It largely depends on how exactly the word “automobile” means. The very first vehicle that could transport people, which was powered by steam, was built by a French engineer and army captain named Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot. However, it would not be exactly to call it a car, since it was used to transport heavy army equipment. Here, then, is a very clear look at the history of the motor vehicle.

Though the automotive industry was early controlled by American companies, the first gas-powered car was actually created by a German, Karl Benz, in 1885. About ten years later, Ferdinand Porsche invented the first hybrid vehicle. It used both electricity and gas. Interestingly, at that time, electric vehicles were more common than those which ran on gas. There was a problem with them, though. Their high cost put them out of reach of the middle class, and they were considered something expensive. That all changed with Henry Ford’s Model T car, which appeared in 1908 in America. His use of the assembly line (生产线), which he also invented, made it possible to quickly and, even more importantly, cheaply build cars. This enabled Ford to sell his gas-powered cars at a price that was popular with the general public.

Other American car-makers began to successfully copy Ford’s inventions and techniques, resulting in a huge, profitable(有利润的) automobile industry in the United States. Over the years, however, the quality of American-made cars began to decline, leaving the industry easily harmed or hurt in competition from other countries, especially Japan. Japanese car-makers began capturing (占领) the car market in the 1970s because their cars were strong, cheap and saving oil. Since 1980, Japan has been one of the largest producers of automobiles in the world. As for China, it is surely the largest producer of automobiles in the world nowadays.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了无糖饮料会让我们更想吃甜味的食物,以及无糖饮料的危害。

【推荐2】“Zero calories(卡路里) and no weight gain.” Diet soft drinks(无糖饮料) are often advertised in this way. But are they really a good choice for us?

Some people think diet soft drinks are healthier because they don’t have any sugar or calories. They think drinking these drinks can help them to lose weight.

Actually, diet soft drinks do have some sugar, although very little. Usually, if there is 0.5 grams of sugar or less in a 100-gram drink, it can be described as a diet soft drink.

Although they have little sugar, diet soft drinks still taste sweet by using artificial sweeteners(人工甜味剂). They have very few calories.

Sugar just tastes good. Sweet is the first taste that people start to enjoy after birth. So when you eat sweet-tasting things like sugar, our brains start to want more of it. The taste of sugar also releases endorphins(分泌内啡肽) that calm and relax us. It also hits your brain and makes you want more. Your brain tells your body to prepare itself for more sugar. When you drink a diet soft drink, the brain receives the “sweet signal”, but no sugar arrives. Since the brain is fooled, it still wants more sweets.

Some people drink diet soft drinks instead of water. This is not a good choice. Diet soft drinks can be bad for your teeth and affect your appetite(食欲). The additives(添加剂) in these drinks are not good for you either.
