We call the Chinese New Year the Spring Festival. It usually comes in January or February. There is     1     name for each Chinese year. We may     2     it the year of the pig, the year of the monkey or the year of the horse.

Before the Spring Festival, people are busy shopping and cleaning     3     houses. On Chinese New Year’s Eve, there is always a big family     4    . They cook many dishes for the dinner. The dishes     5     all delicious. Family members eat and talk. They feel very     6    . After dinner, all the family stay up (熬夜)     7     to welcome the new year.

On the     8     day of the new year, people put on their new clothes and go to visit their relatives (亲戚) and friends. They     9     “Best wishes” and some other greetings to each other. The “unity of man and nature” (天人合一) is necessary and important in the culture of China. The Chinese believe the unity of man and nature. They think it is a basic way of their philosophy (哲学) of life. Most     1     Chinese festivals build a right order of relationships among humans. They     2     for nature by humans, too.

The ancient Chinese never placed themselves     3     nature. Zhuangzi, for example, believed “Heaven (天) and earth are parents to all things in the world”. The duty of nature is to “    4     birth to all things and let all things grow”, while the duty of humans is to “make all things perfect”. Heaven, earth and humans should be one in unity. Each of the     5     parts has its own way. They are necessary to each other, so they should treat each other with     6    .

The idea of unity of man and nature has been in the heart of Chinese people. It encourages modern Chinese     7     action to protect the natural environment. The power is from water, wind and sunlight.

Most of the Chinese,     10     the young, are ready to protect the natural environment. China is now working with all other countries to make the earth a better place to live in.

Not everyone wears clothes in the same way. People like different     1     of clothes. Some people like to wear clothes made     2     silk. They think such clothes are     3     and feel great. But the clothes are so expensive     4     many of us can’t afford to buy them. Some people like to wear sportswear because it is simple but comfortable to wear and it doesn’t     5     much. Because the clothes make     8     look so capable (能干的), and the customers will feel more confident when working with them. For students, they usually wear uniforms at school. As the saying goes, “Clothes make the man”. If you want to succeed in life, you’ll have to know     10     you should wear clothes first.

People’s opinions about dressing are changing all the time. In the very old days, people dressed to protect     1     bodies well only. They used animal skins and tree leaves to make clothes.     2    , they found that suitable clothes can make women     3     and men more handsome. Slowly, dressing becomes fashionable. That’s the reason why people spend much money on clothes nowadays. With the help of fashion designers, many different styles of clothes     4     every day. When you walk along the street in towns or cities, you may find many new styles of clothes in the shops easily,     5     silk scarves, leather jackets to cotton blouses and so on. Of course, everyone likes to     6     their own ways of dressing. Perhaps the     7     popular clothes among all the styles are casual ones, such as a cotton shirt. It feels soft and smooth. So the young and the old both enjoy     8     it.

But sometimes we have to wear formal clothes. When police officers are at work, they must wear uniforms. Bank clerks (职员) wear uniforms when they’re serving their     9    . Businessmen need to wear formal clothes when they’re having a business     10    .

Different people wear different clothes. As the saying goes, “You’re what you wear.”
