Magic shows have been around for a long time and have always fascinated people.     1     In Egypt, magicians did tricks with their hands to make things look different or disappear into thin air. In China, magicians were good at moving things around and doing tricks with objects.

When it was the Middle Ages, magic changed a bit. It became more mystical (神秘的) and connected to beliefs about spirits and superstitions (迷信).     2     But then, in the late 1800s and early 1900s, magic shows became popular again. There was a magician named Harry Houdini who did unbelievable things like getting out of handcuffs (手铐) underwater or breaking free from locked boxes.     3     As time went on, different kinds of magic started to develop. Some magicians performed big tricks with props (道具) like saws, boxes, and things that made someone float.     4     And there were some magicians called mentalists who made it seem like they could read people’s minds or have special powers.

Even now, magic is still popular, and people love watching it. With TV and the Internet, magicians have become even more famous.     5     In that very moment, you’ll experience the true magic of the world—a world where dreams come true and impossibilities become possible!

【推荐1】There are many colors in nature. But do you know if a color has weight? I think you will say “no”. But I am afraid you are wrong. If you don’t believe, you can do a small experiment.
First, put two objects with the same weight into two boxes. Then cover the box. Third, wrap one box with a red piece of paper, the other with a white piece of paper. OK. Now hold the boxes with your hand one by one. It is certain that you will think the red one is a little heavier.
Why do you think so? A scientist found that different colors have different weight in a man’s mind. So he did many tests and at last he got the result. That is to say, every color has its own weight in our mind and their order is the same. The heaviest color is red, then blue, green, orange, yellow and white.
The scientist told us that colors also have smell. Can you smell the color? Of course not. Then why did the scientist say so? That is because every color stands for a kind of light with a certain wavelength. It reaches our brain through sense organs.
According to this discovery, scientists say that people accept the colors they like, and refuse the colors they hate. So your body and mind will be healthy by using the colors you like. Or you’ll be nervous or even get ill. For example, if you stay in a room with red windows, wallpapers and furniture for two hours, you’ll feel you have been there for four hours. But if the room is blue, you’ll feel you have been there for only an hour. Another example, if a person walks out of a red room and into a blue room, his temperature will fall. That means our body temperature will change with different colors.
1. The idea of the second paragraph is to tell us _________.
A.a red box is heavier than a white one
B.a color has weight in one’s mind
C.white paper is lighter than red paper
D.you can know the weight of a color by holding it
2. Why does the scientist say colors has smell?
A.Because people can sense the light from colors.
B.Because we can smell the colors by our noses.
C.Because every color has its sweet smell.
D.Because every color gives off light with the same wavelength.
3. It can be known from the text that ____________.
A.colors has order in weight.
B.colors can change the weight of an object.
C.people would stay longer in a room with red windows.
D.colors can affect our mood and health.
4. The passage is probably a __________.
A.book reviewB.history textbook
C.travel magazineD.science report.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了全球气温变暖导致的睡眠问题。

【推荐2】Good sleep is really important to our health. But global heating is leading to increases in night-time temperatures that are happening faster than they are during the day. This makes it harder for us to get quality sleep. As global temperature increases, the average global citizen is already losing 44 hours of sleep every year, a recent study revealed.

The study used sleep and outdoor weather data collected from 2017 to 2022. It found that higher temperatures reduced sleep by putting off its onset. People’s bodies need to cool every night as they fall asleep, but this is harder to do when it is warmer.

“Some groups, however, will be affected much more than others.” said Kelton Minor, a researcher from the University of Copenhagen. The sleep loss per degree of warming is about a quarter higher for women than men, twice as high for those over 65 years old, and three times higher for those in less wealthy nations.

“Women usually have higher levels of fat than men, which may make the cooling time longer. Older people are known to sleep less at night and have poorer body temperature regulation(调节). People in poorer nations could lose more sleep, as it’s harder for them to get cooling machines.” he explained.

The studies have also shown that rising temperatures hurt health, including increasing the possibilities of heart diseases, mental health problems, accidents and injuries. They have also been found to reduce one’s ability to work and study. Poor sleep has also been shown to have these effects. However, disturbed sleep may be a key reason why researchers are seeing these heat related health problems.

Worryingly, there were no signs of people being able to adapt to hotter nights. The growing numbers of people in many countries around the world are simply not getting enough sleep.

1. People are losing their sleep because high temperature ________.
A.puts off the happening of falling asleep
B.increases the possibilities of waking up
C.makes it harder for people to get quality sleep
D.destroys the ability of body temperature regulation
2. According to Kelton Minor, we can know that ________.
A.older people sleep less because of poor health condition.
B.women usually have higher body temperature than men.
C.people in rich countries usually have more sleeping time.
D.old woman in poor countries are more likely to lose sleep.
3. Paragraph 5 mainly wants to tell us ________.
A.the damage of high temperaturesB.the effects of poor sleep
C.the key reason of heat related problemsD.the ways to get enough sleep

文章大意:本文主要讲述了说谎对大脑的负面影响。

【推荐3】Scientists have found that lying can be bad for your brain. It may stop you from doing other important things.

◆Hard work

When you tell the truth, your brain doesn’t have to do extra work. But lying takes much more work. Imagine you’re late for class. The teacher asks why and you decide to lie. You say, “I picked up a book from the library.” Your teacher asks, “The book I mentioned last time?” Then you must decide how to answer the question. If you say yes, the teacher might ask to see the book. You have to think of a book name. You need to make sure it’s a book that the library has. See? When you lie, your brain works a lot.

◆Expensive lies

You give your brain plenty of extra work. An area called the prefrontal cortex (前额皮质) does the work. “It’s the part in control of short memories,” Jennifer, a scientist, said. That area also takes care of planning, problem-solving and self-control.

Using too much brainpower to lie means it’s not helpful for other things like solving math problems. Lying is even harder for young people. The prefrontal cortex isn’t fully developed until the age of 25. So when young people lie, they’ll have a harder time doing other things, like making study plans or having healthy habits. So think twice before lying next time.

1. What does the underlined word “extra” in Paragraph 2 mean in Chinese? ________
A.轻易的B.复杂的C.额外的D.平常的
2. What does the prefrontal cortex help people do? ________
A.Build long-term memories and make plans.
B.Make plans and work out problems.
C.Work out problems and relax our brains.
D.Make plans and relax our brains.
3. According to the passage, why is it harder for people under 25 to tell lies? ________
A.Because they are not clever enough.
B.Because they have too much brainpower.
C.Because they’re still learning how to talk to others.
D.Because they don’t have fully grown brains.
4. What does the passage mainly talk about “ ________” .
A.Lying is hard work for your brain
B.Telling a lie needs making up one hundred lies
C.Lying means you aren’t honest at all
D.Telling a lie is bad for your study
