All around the world, we have created the win-at-all-cost cultures. As a society, we honor the champions. We cheer for those people who win championships, elections and awards. Winning at all costs has become acceptable. We have become so focused on that end result instead of the process, and particularly when the end result is a win, usually how we got there often gets swept under the proverbial rug.
We need to redefine (重新定义) success. Real success is developing champions in life for our world, win or
lose. We may be able to plan our way to a win, but we can’t plan our way to success.
Back to 1990, when I was first made the head coach of the UCLA Women’s Gymnastics Team, the best I could do was what other “successful” coaches had done. So, I became tough-talking and mean. I acted like a head coach whose only thought was to figure out how to win.
After putting up with me for a few years, our team asked me for a team meeting. And for over two hours, they gave me examples of how my arrogance ( 傲 慢 ) was hurtful. That was my time-out, and I chose to change. I realized that I needed to support our student athletes as whole human beings, not just athletes who won.
It is so much easier to give orders than to actually figure out how to motivate (激励) someone to be better. And the motivation takes a really long time to take root. The key ingredient was to develop trust through patience and honesty.
Let’s think about what you are talking with your parents on the car ride home. Are they focusing on the end result? Are you excited to use that time to show you are a winner? All of you care too much about the end result instead of your steps of learning.
We are all coaches in some ways. We all have the responsibility to develop champions in life for our world.
That is what real success looks like, and that is what we call a win-win.

Several years ago, when I was teaching at a middle school, a girl sent me a message. She found someone write a very bad message on her locker (储物柜). She took a picture and then sent it to me asking for help.
A few hours later, I noticed that she had posted that picture on her Instagram (照片墙) and asked if anyone knew who did that.
The following day, that girl came to me with a boy. She showed me a note she had received. It was a heartfelt apology. I asked her if she knew who had done it, and the boy replied embarrassedly (尴尬地), “It was me. I don’t know why I did it, but I know it was wrong. So I wrote her this note. I just wanted to do something to try to make up for my action.”
My heart felt so full of pride for this boy. I told him how brave he was to come forward and how amazing it was that he did something kind to correct his mistake. I turned to the girl and asked her if she could forgive (原谅) him. Without thinking, she said, “Yes.”
Middle school students are not little children any more, but not grown-ups yet. It is normal that they make mistakes because of their ages. I work as a volunteer for an organization that helps the poor in Haiti. I decided to take my son Brain there for a week, hoping to educate(教育) him.
Before getting out, I told Brain this trip would be tiring and hard. For the first two days, he said almost nothing. Then on the third day, when we were climbing over high rocky mountains, he turned to me and smiled, “Really hard.”
After that, a five-year-old girl, wearing a too large dress and broken shoes, followed Brain around. Later he said, “I wish I could speak French.” I was surprised that this was from a boy who always hated French classes.
But the exciting moment occurred in a village(村庄) deep in the mountains. I was talking to a woman villager for an article. By working hard, she had learned to read and write and became part of the head of the village.
Learning her story, Brain was greatly moved. His eyes were wet and there was love on his face. He finally understood the importance of my work. When leaving for home, Brain even offered to stay in as a volunteer. This trip was very meaningful.

I’d been learning aikido (合气道) for the past three years. But I’d never fought in real life. As students of aikido, we are not allowed to start a fight. “Aikido,” my teacher always told us, “is about solving conflict (解决冲突), not starting it.”
I decided that this was my moment. If I didn’t do something fast, somebody might get hurt. So I stood up, ready to fight.
Just then, someone shouted, “Hey!” It was an old man. He was smiling at the drunk man. “What have you been drinking?” he asked.
“I’ve been drinking wine (葡萄酒), but it’s none of your business!” said the drunk man angrily. “Oh, that’s wonderful,” said the old man. Then he told how he loved drinking wine with his wife and eating watermelon.
“I also love watermelon,” said the drunk man.
“And I’m sure you have a wonderful wife, too,” said the old man.
“No,” replied the drunk man. “My wife died,” Then he began to sob (啜泣), “I have no wife, no home, no job. I’m so ashamed of myself.”

My house is on a hill. There was only a small parking place. As a new driver, I was so scared when I realized I would have to reverse (倒车) out of the driveway. I knew that if I parked backwards (朝后), it would be easier to get out later.
For three months, I didn’t even think of trying.
So I started my car, went down that hill, turned around and reversed. I made it. I got into the parking place.
As weeks went on, I continued trying. The more I practiced, the better I did. But I had never practiced parking in the dark before. Then I decided to push myself.
