The International Day of Happiness, which falls on March 20 every year, reminds people of the importance of happiness.
According to Martin Seligman, a US psychology professor, happiness is about doing things that are engaging and meaningful.
Psychologist Dan Baker says our purpose doesn’t have to be huge. For example, a 17-year-old’s purpose might be to get into their preferred college.
After understanding what happiness is, you might wonder what affects our happiness.
Life circumstances like getting a new car or a promotion don’t lead to long-lasting happiness because we get used to them. To keep feeling happy, we need to control how we act and think.
A.Scientists found that people are born with happiness. |
B.Are you feeling happy now? |
C.But what is happiness and how can we be happy? |
D.“Engaging” means being so absorbed in what we do that we forget about time. |
E.Happiness also changes as we grow up. |
F.For a parent, it could be getting their kids ready for school every day. |

We had taken the subway all over the city and were congratulating ourselves on our understanding of what is honestly a good subway design that is pretty easy to follow. We decided to visit Versailles by train. We chatted happily along the way until my father realized we were far into the French countryside and no one around spoke English.
We reached the end of the line and felt frightened when everyone finally left the train. An old man and his grandchild noticed us and came up to help. He spoke no English, so in broken French we tried to explain. When he finally understood, this great man settled his grandson and led us to the correct train and then got on it with us. Later we knew the truth that there was a train transfer and he didn’t want us to miss it. This kind man rode a train an hour and a half out of his way to make sure that three Americans got where they wanted to be. He refused to let us buy the ticket for him. He did it all with a gentle smile and shook our hands gently at the stop. Then in his quiet way, he got on the train to return the way he had come.
What impressed me most was the man and his kindness during the amazing trip. Some Americans think the French are rude for some reason, but I always try to make them change their minds with this very story.

Parents, teachers, and others who deal closely with teenagers know how difficult the adolescent(青少年的) years can be. This was thought to be due to the “foolishness of youth.” Now, brain-imaging technology allows scientists to study the physical development of the brain in more details than ever before. Their discoveries have led a new theory of why teens act this way.
Recently, scientists have discovered that though our brains are almost at their full size by the age of six, they are far from fully developed. Only during adolescence do our brains truly “grow up.” During this time, they go through great changes, like a computer system being upgraded. This “upgrade” was once thought to be finished by about age 12. Now scientists have found that our brains continue to change until age 25. Such changes make us better at balancing impulses (冲动) with following rules. But a still-developing brain does this clumsily (笨拙地). The result, scientists believe, is the unpredictable behavior seen in teenagers.
The studies show that teens are more likely to take risks. Luckily, the news isn’t all bad. As brain scientist B. J. Casey points out, the teen brain inspires such behavior in order to help teens prepare for adult life.
One way the brain does this is by changing the way teens measure risk and reward (回报).
Researchers have found that when teens think about rewards, their brains release more of the chemicals that create pleasure. Researchers believe this makes the rewards seem more important than the risks, and makes teens feel the excitement of new experience.
Research into the structure of the teen brain have also found that it makes social connection seem especially rewarding. As such, teens have a strong need to meet new people. Because it is still developing, a teen brain can change to deal with new situations. So it connects social rewards with even more pleasure. In this way, the brain encourages teens to have a wide circle of friends, which is believed to make them more successful in life.
Unluckily, this need for greater rewards can sometimes lead teens to make bad decisions. However, it also means that teens are more likely, and less afraid, to try new things or to be independent. And in the long run, the impulses of the teen brain are what help teens leave their parents’ care and live their own life successfully.

Do you still remember the lecture from China’s Tiangong space station last year? On March 23rd, astronauts Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu gave another one! It was shown live around the world.
Hot “ice”
Last time, the astronauts made a water ball in space.
After Wang pressed the solution from the bag, it became a transparent liquid ball(透明的水球). Wang used a small stick covered with a chemical to touch the ball and it quickly became an “ice ball”. “It looks like an ice ball, but as I touch it, I can feel that it’s warm,” Wang told the class.
A bridge of water
How do you build a “bridge” with water?
In the lecture, Wang first made two water balls on two plates, then let them touch each other.
If we mix oil and water in a bottle on Earth, they will quickly separate because they have different densities(密度). Gravity brings the water down while the oil stays on top. However, if you do this in the space station, with no gravity, this won’t happen.
“How can we separate them, then?” When Wang asked for a method of separating water and oil in space, a student from Beijing suggested swinging the bottle in a circle. Wang’s teammate Ye Guangfu tried the method and succeeded in separating the two.
A.Separate water and oil |
B.This time, they turned a water ball into an “ice” ball |
C.What fun experiments did they do this time |
D.It’s hard to do it on Earth |
E.Next, Wang pulled the two plates apart |

Dr Richard Graham, a lead technology addiction specialist at the Nightingale Hospital in London, welcome WHO’s decision. “The decision is important because it draws more attention from the society. It also creates the opportunity for the gaming addicts to receive specialized services. It is something that people should take seriously.” He added, “Some people do not think the condition should be treated with medicine. He could lead to confused parents whose children are just crazy gamers. They don’t know how to help their children out.” Dr Richard saw about 50 new cases of gaming addiction each year. He introduced the standards to tell whether a player is gaming addicted or not. Those standards are based on whether this action—gaming is affecting everyday things such as sleep, eating, social activities and education.
Lots of countries in the world are grappling with the problem. In South Korea, the government has put forward a law, stopping children under 16 from playing online games (between midnight and 6 am). In Japan, players are warned if they spend more than a certain amount of time each month playing games. As for China, Internet giant Tencent has limited the hours when children can play its most popular games.
Researcher Killian Mullan said, “People think that children are addicted to technology and spend a lot of time in front of these screens. They then become uninterested in other activities. However, we now know that is not true. Our findings show that technology is being used in some cases to support other activities, like homework for example, and not pushing them out.” He added, “Just like adults, while doing other things, children make full use of high technology in study as well.”

Just as it's important for you to have a healthy body, it's also important to have a healthy mind. For a healthy body, you need to eat healthy food and do some exercise. But how do you keep your mind healthy? Perhaps exploring the meaning of things around us and thinking about how we should act in the world might help. That's called philosophy!
Have you ever wondered about the big things in life, like what is happiness? Or what is true friendship? It's normal for all of us to ask these questions. Usually when you are a kid, your parents try to teach you about these kinds of things. In the 1970s, philosophy professor Matthew Lipman developed a series of activities for the classroom which he called Philosophy for Children (P4C). The aim of these activities is to help children think for themselves about things that matter. The series includes different kinds of activities in which kids discuss different topics: the environment, animal rights, and more. Since kids usually spend more time at school than they do at home, school is a great place for these discussions. The teacher's role is to encourage the students to talk and express their thoughts and beliefs, not to give them the 'answers' – after all, these are the kind of questions to which there are no easy answers!
There is evidence that P4C really does make kids better thinkers and better students. But we thought that the program might also help with the students' mental health. After all, over the past years, mental health problems among children have been increasing. So what if schools carried out the P4C program? Would it have a positive influence on their mental health? This is the question we wanted to answer.
To judge the influence of P4C on children's mental health, we asked three classrooms to take part in our study. Even though our results are promising when it comes to levels of self-determination and anxiety, the P4C program didn't show any influence on depression (忧郁) levels. However, perhaps we could expect an influence on children with clinical depression (a very serious level of depression). Because none of our participants suffered from it, there was not much room for improvement – they were already doing pretty well. There was no important change in how satisfied the children were with their lives, nor with themselves. Perhaps the topics we discussed were not that suitable for this kind of improvement. Another possibility is that their self-respect and life satisfaction won't grow immediately but could do so some time after the end of the program.
1. According to the passage, what can perhaps keep your mind healthy?A.Taking part in the study about mental health problems. |

A.It's normal for all of children to ask stupid questions. |
B.P4C has a negative influence on kids' mental health. |
C.P4C really helps children be a better thinkers and students. |
D.The study increased the levels of self-determination. |
A.kids' self - esteem will grow immediately | B.P4C helps with the students' mental health |
C.P4C showed influence on depression levels | D.the topics are suitable for kids' satisfaction |
