【推荐1】We were lucky enough to have a trip to Dubai（迪拜）last year. This city has grown out of the desert only in the past few years. It is amazing. We stayed in the Downtown area, very close to the Dubai Mall.     1     The free-standing building is the tallest in the world's biggest malls.

Dubai is hot. It's built on a desert overlooking the Arabian sea. Temperatures when we were there were well over 40℃.    2    But the buildings are linked（连接）together so you don't need to be outside for long.

We were told before we visited Dubai that it was the type of place where foreigners were not welcome. How wrong they were! People were more than accepting of different cultures. Dubai is the most welcoming place we have ever been to.    3    

    4     No litter, no smoking on every corner. The roads are so wide that there is no real traffic. Also, Dubai is simply safe, yet there are not police around.

Dubai is all about fun. The food we enjoyed in Dubai was out of this world.    5

【推荐3】I work as a volunteer for an organization that helps the poor in Haiti. Recently I took my son Brian there for a week, hoping to educate (教育) him.

Before setting out, I told Brian this trip would be tiring and hard. For the first two days, he said almost nothing. Then, on the third day, as we were climbing over high rocky mountains, he turned to me and grinned (咧嘴笑), “Pretty hard.”

After that there was no turning back. A five-year-old girl, wearing a too large dress and broken shoes, followed Brian around. Later he said regretfully (遗憾地), “I wish I could speak French.” I was surprised that this was from a boy who always hated French classes.

However, the moment that really touched my heart occurred (发生) in a village deep in the mountains. I was interviewing a woman villager for an article. By working hard, she had learned to read and write, and became part of the leadership (领导层) of the village.

Learning her story, Brian was greatly touched. His eyes were wet and there was love and respect (尊敬) on his face. He finally understood the importance of my work. When leaving for home, Brian even offered to stay there as a volunteer. The trip was very meaningful.
