Several years ago, a couple left their job and sold everything in their home to travel around the world with their 13-year-old daughter. And the girl left school to travel with her parents. Will you stop studying to travel like the girl? Here are some students’ opinions.
Wang Le, 14, from Zhejiang:
I think it is a really good way to practice our communication skills by speaking English. If we travel with our parents around the world, we have to talk to others, especially in English. And there are not so many chances for that at school. So I think we should travel like them.
Zhang Qiwen, 14, from Jiangsu:
I will travel with my parents. Why do we study? We go to school to learn more about the world. If we have a better way to learn about it, why don’t we do it? We can see lots of amazing things when we travel around the world with our parents. Having classes at school is boring and useless. I like traveling better.
Zhang Yuxi, 15, from Shanghai:
It is too dangerous to stop studying to travel. Our parents can’t make sure that they know everything. There are lots of dangers in a completely strange environment. We can’t take a risk of putting ourselves in danger. If we do, we’ll be really foolish.
Wang Quan, 14, from Beijing:
I think we have enough time to study at school as well as do some traveling. We need to study at school because it makes sure that we won’t fall behind our peers (同龄人). And we can also travel in the summer or winter holidays. It helps us to broaden our horizon (拓宽视野) and learn things not in books. But I don’t think it is a good idea to stop studying to travel.
Will you stop studying to travel?Different | Wang Le | The school can’t give us many |
Zhang Qiwen | Traveling is a better way to learn more about the world. Traveling is much | |

Harbin is the capital city of Heilongjiang Province. It’s one of the coldest cities in temperature, but became the hottest place in tourism (旅游业) this winter. Tourists from all directions came to Harbin to experience a different and unforgettable winter. Many of them were from southern China, where it hardly snows all year round. People gave them a lovely nickname (昵称) “southern little potatoes”.
Only you can’t imagine, nothing Harbin can’t do. Harbin’s government and the locals showed the tourists with their best hospitality (款待). They offered kinds of special food, like fried pork in scoop (锅包肉), Harbin sausages (香肠), cold noodles, frozen (冻的) pears, and so on. They provided free pick-up service, beautiful firework shows, fantastic concerts…They even invited the Orozen people (鄂伦春族) to the center street with their reindeer (驯鹿), which was almost impossible to be seen in the past. People were amazed and touched, and many of them even made the short videos about their travelling to share their great joy and Harbin’s kindness on the Internet.
It’s true that tourists had great fun in this “warm” city. They would never forget their happy time in Harbin Ice and Snow World, where they enjoyed the beautiful ice sculptures (冰雕) and took part in all kinds of ice sports, such as ice rock-climbing, skating, skiing, snow fights, ice golf and so on. The experience on the world’s longest ice slide (滑梯) may be the most exciting part.
With the spring in the air, the travelling to Harbin seems to come to an end. However, Harbin’s hospitality will never be forgotten. Harbin’s story will be remembered forever. We do believe that more legends (传奇) in Harbin will be continued, and we all hope for a more interesting and exciting Harbin next year!

Sorry I haven’t written till now. I’m travelling with my Chinese friend Li Lei in Harbin, the ice city of Heilongjiang Province in Northeast China. Now let me tell you something about it.
When we got here, people were so kind and they welcomed us warmly. On the first day, we saw all kinds of ice sculptures (冰雕). They looked like plants and animals, and we took lots of photos of them. Going down the longest ice slide was exciting. We watched a firework show and the lion dance at night too.
On the second day, we watched the sunrise, and enjoyed the hot springs and barbecues (烧烤). We also met a group of 11 lovely children from Nanning. They were having an educational (教育的) trip. They all wore bright orange clothes and were known as “Little Oranges”. They would stay with the local families for a week and took part in different activities with their lead teachers. They could also learn how to look after themselves when travelling. They were so brave.
In a word, the experience in Harbin was quite exciting, meaningful and unforgettable. Let me know how you are doing in New York.
Yours,
Tom
