There is a saying, “He who has never been to the Great Wall is not a true man.” It describes the big challenge of making a journey to the Great Wall. It also tells people not to give up. British brothers James and Thomas Lindesay, aged 28 and 21, know the saying very well. And last year, the two brothers spent months running along the Great Wall.
The pair set off from the Jiayuguan in Gansu Province on July 15. It took the two 131 days of running and walking along the main west-to-east length of the Great Wall to reach the Shanhaiguan on November 22. Their Great Wall journey covered 3,263 kilometers. They are the first known brothers, and Thomas the youngest person, to succeed in running the wall in one journey.
The two brothers’ love for the Great Wall is from their father, William Lindesay. William once ran along the wall 35 years ago. He has devoted (奉献) more than 30 years of his life to visiting, studying and protecting the wall. And his action influenced his two sons. They spent most of their weekend’s walking, taking photos and picking up rubbish from the Great Wall.
Compared to their father’s journey, the brothers’ trip was helped by advanced (先进的) tools like GPS watches and digital maps. However, it was still not easy for the two to do that. They had to go through bad weather and even illnesses. Finally, they completed their trip.
This experience gave the brothers a deeper understanding of the Great Wall and the history behind it. For the two, it is not enough to just go to the Great Wall; they must also love and protect it.
