One of my close friends, Bob, has a very large police dog named Jack. Every Sunday afternoon, Bob and Jack have a walk in the park nearby. Jack likes these walks very much. One Sunday afternoon, I paid a visit to my friend. I stayed there for a long time and my friend and I had much more talk with each other than ever before. Soon it was time for them to take a walk in the park. We forgot that. Jack became worried about it. He walked around the room several times and then sat down in front of me and looked at me. But I still paid no attention to him. I went on talking with my friend. At last, Jack could not wait any longer. He went out of the room and came back a few minutes later. He sat down in front of me again. But this time, he held my hat in his mouth. Suddenly, I understood what Jack meant and so did my friend.

Dolphins use their brains quite differently from the way humans do. But scientists say dolphins and humans are very similar in some ways. How?
Like humans, every dolphin has its own "name". The name is a special whistle (哨声). Each dolphin chooses a specific (特有的) whistle for itself, usually by its first birthday. Dolphins are like people in other ways, too. They "talk" to each other about a lot of things—such as their age, their feelings, and finding food. They also use a system of sounds and body language to communicate. Understanding dolphin conversation is not easy for humans. No one "speaks dolphin" yet, but some scientists are trying to learn.
Dolphins are also social animals. They live in groups called pods, and they often join others from different pods to play games and have fun—just like people. Scientists believe playing together is something only intelligent animals do.
Dolphins and humans are similar in another way: both species make plans for getting things they want. In the seas of southern Brazil, for example, dolphins use an intelligent plan to get food. When there are fish near a boat, dolphins signal (发信号) to the fishermen to put their nets in the water. Using this method, the men can catch a lot of fish. Why do dolphins help the men? There is an advantage for them: they get to eat some of the fish that escape (逃脱) from the net.

Dan jumped on his bike and cycled out of the village. Dylan ran along beside him. After about five minutes they came to the sign to Holt Farm. Dan stopped. The farmhouse was down a farm road and behind some trees.
Dan put his bike behind a hedge (树篱)-he didn’t want anyone to see it. Then he started walking down the road.
Dylan walked along behind him. Quickly they came to the trees. Dan moved carefully through the trees. He didn’t want the thieves (贼) to see him.
He got near to the house.
He could see the white van (货车) by the side of the house. He could hear dogs barking but he couldn’t see them.
Slowly and carefully he moved round the house. Dylan followed him.
At the back of the house he found the dogs. There were ten of them all together. The dogs were all in a small area with a fence (栅栏) around it. Some of the dogs were standing up barking, a couple were playing and the others were lying down.
There was a gate in the fence with a lock on it.
Dan looked across at the van.
“It’s probably best to get my phone back and call the police,”he thought.“Stay!”he told Dylan quietly.
Then he quickly ran over to the van. The back door didn’t open. He tried the driver’s door. That didn’t open.
Dan sat down behind the van and thought. The thieves probably had the keys in the house. He could cycle back to the village and call the police. Or he could open the gate and let the dogs out first, and then cycle back to the village. That was a better idea.
