Some primary schoolchildren have been raised in homes with more green space around. They are likely to come with larger volumes of white and grey matter in certain areas of the brain. These differences are associated(关联) with beneficial effects on cognitive function (认知功能) . This is the main conclusion of a study led by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health.
The study was performed among 253 schoolchildren in Spain .Lifelong exposure(接触) to green space in the living places was recorded—using the information on the children’s addresses from birth up through to the time of the study. Brain structure was studied using 3D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Working memory and inattentiveness(注意力不集中)were graded with computers.
“This is the first study that shows the association between long-term exposure to green space and brain structure.” Says Dr. Payam Dadvand, the leading researcher of the study, “Our findings suggest that exposure to green space early in life could result in beneficial structural changes in the brain.”
The findings show that long-term exposure to greenness is positively associated with white and grey matter volumes in several parts of the brain. Some of them are related to higher scores on cognitive tests. Moreover, larger volumes of white and grey matter in those parts might lead to better working memory and less inattentiveness.
Exposure to nature has been thought to be necessary for brain development in children. Another study of 2,593 children shows that children in school with more green space have a greater increase in working memory and a greater decrease in inattentiveness.
Humans are believed to be tied to nature.   Playing in greener areas offers children opportunities to search and learn. Accordingly, green space is thought to prompt important exercises in discovery, creativity and risk taking. These exercises in turn positively influence brain development.
Dr. Dadvand’s study suggests how such structural changes could bring about the beneficial effects of green spaces on cognitive development, it also adds to the proof that suggests the lasting effects of early life exposure to greenness on our health and the benefits of increasing greenness in cities.
Further studies are needed to prove the findings in other populations, settings and climates. And researchers need to examine differences according to the nature and quality of green space.

2. The word “prompt” in paragraph 6 probably means “      “.

B.Dr. Dadvand stressed the importance of changing the environment.
C.Studies proved the influence of greenness on populations outs of Spain.
D.Living in greener neighborhoods benefits children in brain development.

【推荐1】We each have memory(记忆力).That’s why we can still remember things after a long time. Some people have very good memories and they can easily learn many things by heart, but some people can only remember things when they say or do them again and again. Many of the great men of the world have got surprising memories.
A good memory is a good help in learning a language. Everybody learns his mother language when he is a small child. He hears the sounds, remember them and then he learns to speak. Some children are living with their parents in foreign countries. They can learn two languages as easily as one because they hear, remember and speak two languages every day. In school it is not easy to learn a foreign language because the students have so little time for it, and they are busy with other subjects, too. But your memory will become better and better when you do more and more exercise.

C.they read a lot of books
D.they have very good memories
2. Everybody learns his mother language_________.
A.at the age of six
B.when he is a small child
C.after he goes to school
D.when he can read and write
3. Before a child can speak, he must_____________.
A.read and writeB.make sentences
C.hear and rememberD.think hard
4. Your memory will become better and better____________.
A.if you have lots of good food
B.if you do more and more exercise
C.if you do morning exercises every day
D.if you get up early

文章大意:这篇短文主要介绍了迄今为止建造的体积最大也是最强大的太空科学望远镜——韦伯。

【推荐2】On Dec. 25, 2021, a new age of space science started when NASA set up the James Webb Space Telescope (望远镜) . It will change our understanding of space.

According to NASA, Webb is the world’s largest and most powerful telescope. The old Hubble Space Telescope mostly sees what we see-light, But Webb sees infrared (红外线的) light, which is invisible to the human eye. It can make new discoveries by examining stars inside those dust clouds. It will be able to“look at’”the first light after the Big Bang (宇宙大爆炸) which created our universe, as well as how young stars grow.

Webb “sees” by using mirrors to collect infrared light from the universe. The bigger the mirror is, the more details it can see. The telescope is as tall as a three-story building and as big as a tennis court. is so big that it has to fold its mirrors to fit inside the rocket, Once in orbit (轨道), they will unfold, creating one large mirror.

The telescope flew 29 days to reach its orbit, which is more than one million kilometers away from the earth. After six months, it sent back its first picture.

The building of the telescope started in 2004. About 40 million hours of work, thousands of scientists from 14 countries, 10 billion dollars and 1 heavy-lift rocket made it all possible.

Now it’s ready to help us answer key questions, such as where we came from and whether we’re alone in the universe.

Have you ever looked out of the window of a passenger plane from 30,000 feet and wondered how people can have any major effect on the Earth? I have. But it is now becoming pretty clear that we are causing a great deal of damage (破坏) to the natural environment. And the planes that rush us in comfort to destinations (目的地) around the globe lead to one of the biggest environmental problems that we face today—global warming.

For those of us lucky enough to have money and time to spend, there are a huge number of attractive places to explore. The cost of air transport has decreased (减少) rapidly over the years, and for many people, especially in rich countries, it is now possible to fly around the world for less money.

Unfortunately, planes produce far more carbon dioxide (CO2 ) than any other form of public transport, and CO2 is now known to be a greenhouse gas causing the temperature of the Earth to rise. Scientists predict that in the near future the climate in Britain will follow that of the Mediterranean (地中海), a popular destination for British holidaymakers flying off to enjoy the sun. If global warming continues, we may also find that many tourist destinations such as the Maldives (马尔代夫) have disappeared under water because of rising sea levels.

So what can be done to solve the problem? Well, although engineers are making more efficient engines and researching other fuels (燃料) such as hydrogen, it will be a long time before air travel is not damaging to the environment. Governments don’t seem to be taking the problem seriously, so it is up to travelers to do what they can to help.

The most obvious way of dealing with the problem is to not travel by plane at all. Environmental groups such as Friends of the Earth encourage people to travel by train and plan holidays nearer home. However, with prices of flights at an all-time low, and exotic destinations more popular than ever, it is hard to ask British tourists to choose London instead of Beijing or Tokyo.

However, there is a way of offsetting (抵消) the carbon dioxide we produce when we travel by plane. A company called Future Forests offers a service that can reduce CO2. The Future Forest website finds the amount of CO2 you are responsible for producing on your flight. Then you will pay a small fee (费用) to the company. And it can help you plant the number of trees that will absorb this CO2.

Yesterday I returned to Japan from England, and was happy to pay Futured Forests £25 to plant the three trees which balance my share of the CO2 produced by my return flight. Now the only thing making me lose sleep is jet lag (时差效应).

A.interestingB.foreignC.similarD.beautiful

A.passengers can pay extra fees to offset the CO2 produced by their flights
B.the climate in Britain is similar to that of the Mediterranean now
C.environmental groups encourage people to plant more trees
D.it’s getting more and more expensive to travel by plane
4. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To discuss the bad effects of CO2.
B.To compare different reasons for global warming.
C.To introduce the famous tourist destinations in the world.
D.To call attention to the environmental damage caused by taking planes.
