Mother's Day is celebrated in the USA. It is also a holiday in some other countries. It is on the second Sunday in May. It is a day to thank mothers. On that day mothers usually receive flowers or cards. On the cards, children will write “Thanks, Mom”, “To the best mother in the world”, “Best wishes for Mother's Day” and so on. We should make mothers happy on that day.
Where does the idea for the holiday come from? We should thank Miss Anna M. Jarvis. She brought up the idea of having such a day. She lived in West Virginia. Her mother died on May 9th, 1905.She had a deep love for her mother. She wrote letters to some important persons. In her letters she asked them to decide a day for all mothers. Then Mother's Day was made on the second Sunday in May by the USA in 1913.
In China, children give presents to their mothers on Mother's Day, or the whole family go out and try to do something nice for their mothers. Mothers always think of others more than themselves. 【推荐1】Why Japanese girls favor school uniforms

When standing in the central areas in Tokyo, you can often see many girls wearing school uniforms. Many of these young girls have already graduated (毕业). If you ask them why they still wear the uniforms, you may get such an answer: We like our school uniforms.

So, why do Japanese girls love school uniforms so much? The first reason may be their fashionable design and good quality. The style (样式) of Japanese school uniforms for girls is adapted from sailor suits. The color and design of the uniform fits Japanese girls’ skin color and body figure. Every ten years, the style will be changed a little to keep up with fashion. Different from some countries’ school uniforms, school uniforms in Japan are well-made and thus expensive. A complete school uniform can cost 40,000JPY. It is designed by a name brand, made with good cloth and produced by a good manufacturer (制造商).

The second reason may be its convenience. In Japan, most schools have strict rules. Though students are allowed to wear their own clothes to school, their clothing has to fit their identity as a student: they can’t wear clothes that are too bright; they can’t wear special shoes and they have to wear the school badge (校徽). For these reasons, a school uniform can be the safest choice.

Another important reason may be the sense of collectivism (集体主义) in Japanese culture. School girls wear uniforms so that they feel proud of being Japanese.

【推荐2】Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答下列问题)

Is it OK to regift present?

People in the UK spend a total of £700 million each year on Christmas presents that aren’t wanted.
Regifting means giving an unwanted present to someone else at a later date.
Regifting could also mean giving the present to charity.
No-receive presents with gratitude. Giving gifts is a tradition that brings families and friends together. The right response to a present is to be thankful, whether you want the thing or not. To pass a present on is ungrateful and rude. What happens in six months if the giver asks to see the thing they considerately (4S) chose and gave you, or asks if you’re enjoying it? You might hurt the giver’s feelings. Besides, a thing is only a waste if a person doesn’t use it. So be imaginative, work out how to enjoy the gift and be thankful.

Giving presents is a thoughtful act of generosity (慷慨) that should be met with thanks — regifting could be seen as rude and ungrateful by the giver.
Regifting may mean the person receiving the present has to lie later on and pretend that they still have the present and are using it.
Instead of regifting, be imaginative and think about how to make use of the present and enjoy it.
Yes — an unwanted thing becomes treasure. When it comes to presents, some say it’s the thought that counts. Others think it’s the thing, and when the thing is unwanted, the present is just a waste. There’s a lot of waste in the world, and it’s damaging the environment. Instead of adding to the problem, give the gift to someone who will love it. Books and toys can be given to a friend on their birthday or to a children’s charity, and clothes to a homeless shelter. In any case, it is often much better to give than to receive.

Regifting is an excellent way to make
use of something that would otherwise
(否则) be a waste. There is far too much
waste and it’s terrible for the environment.
You can give the gift to a friend on a birthday, or to charitable (善) cause, and make someone else happy with the thing you didn’t want.
Regifting turns disappointment into joy. One person’s waste is another’s ________.
1. How much money do people in the UK spend each year on Christmas presents they are unwanted?
____________________________________________
2. It isn’t OK to regift because people receive presents with gratitude, is it?
____________________________________________
3. What does the underlined sentence “It is the thought that counts.” mean?
____________________________________________
4. According to the passage, which is much better, giving or receiving a gift?
____________________________________________
5. After reading the passage, try to complete the last sentence with the proper word: One person’s waste is another’s __________.
6. Are you for or against regifting present? Give a reason which is Not mentioned in the passage?
