Potato chips were really invented by accident. The popular food was invented in 1853 by George Crum, who was a cook at Moon Lake Restaurant in Saratoga Springs,New York. A guest complained that the fried potatoes that Crum had cooked were too thick. Crum thought the guest was making trouble. In return,he cut potatoes paper thin and fried them. The guest loved what soon became known as “Saratoga Chips”, and the new dish became the most popular in the restaurant. Other restaurants in the eastern United States borrowed the idea, but potato chips were not produced for home use until William Tappenden of Cleveland,Ohio started the first potato chip factory in Cleveland, which made lots of money for him.
Potatoes are made up of about 25% solids (固体),mostly starches (淀粉) and sugar, and 75% water. Open an app, place your order, and wait for your food to be delivered(递送) to your home—this is how many people eat in China these days. According to the latest data(数据) from the China Internet Network Information Center, 421 million Chinese people use online food delivery services. That’s equal to half of the total number of internet users in China.

Which group of people is ordering food online the most? Unsurprisingly, it’s mainly young people. A recent report that was jointly(联合) published by the China Hospitality Association and Meituan, a food delivery service, showed that 86.3 percent of the service’s users are between 20 and 34 years old. These people, who are more likely to live in small families, are the major force driving the development of the food delivery industry(行业).

Small families depend greatly on food delivery services. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, Chinese families have changed in size over the past decade. In 2002, only 7.7 percent of families were single-person households. But this number increased to 15.6 percent in 2017. The percentage of two-person families rose from 18.4 in 2002 to 27.2 in 2017. For small families, cooking is relatively(相对) more time-consuming and resource-consuming(耗时耗材), so ordering food online has become more popular. The improvement of China’s food delivery services has also attracted more customers. According to Meituan’s report, the average time it takes to make a food delivery dropped from 38 minutes in 2016 to 29 minutes in 2022. Many delivery platforms(平台) are also offering more services, delivering products such as fruit, vegetables, medicine and flowers. 【推荐2】Yang Xingyu, 23, took a liking to fried (油炸的) insects the first time she ate them while traveling in Lijiang, Yunnan province.

I ate fried locusts (蝗虫) and silkworm chrysalises (蚕蛹). Although they looked a little strange, they were crispy. I now eat them for nutrition (营养),” she said.

Like Yang, about 2 billion people around the world have added insects such as beetles, caterpillars (毛毛虫) and bees into their diets, according to a UN report. They can be fried, baked, cooked with soup and mixed with dessert.

Why are so many people interested in eating insects? It’s partly due to the fast growth of global population. A UN report in July showed the global population will rise to 8.5 billion by 2030, and about 10.4 billion by the 2080s. But getting enough food for everyone is not easy, according to Huang Dawei, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Insects are rich in protein, vitamins (维生素) and minerals. They are good for human bodies. More importantly, there are large numbers of insects. They can play a big role in solving food problems.

Eating insects also helps the environment. For example, pigs produce 10 to 100 times more greenhouse gases (温室气体) per kilogram than mealworms, reported China Daily.

【推荐3】Your house may have an effect on your shape of your body. Experts say the way you design(设计) your home could play a role in whether you put on the pounds or keep them off. You can make your environment work for you instead of against you. Here are some ways to change your home into part of your diet plan.

Open the curtains(窗帘) and turn up the lights. Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating, for people are often less awkward when they’re in poorly lit places—and so more likely to eat lots of food. If your home doesn't have enough window light, get more lights and flood the place with brightness.

Mind the colors. Research suggests warm colors make us eat more. In one study, people who ate meals in a blue room consumed(消化) 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room. Warm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing, while cold colors make us feel less hungry. So when it's time to repaint, go blue.

Don't forget the clockor the radio. People who eat slowly seem to consume about 70 fewer calories(卡路里) per meal than those who rush through their meals. Begin paying attention to the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes. And while you're at it, actually sit down to eat. If you need some help slowing down, turn on relaxing music. It makes you less likely to rush through a meal.

Downsize the dishes. Big serving bowls and plates can easily make us fat. We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one, total intake(摄取量) jumps by 14 percent. And we’ll pour about 30 percent more liquid(液体) into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass.

A.take in food betterB.burn more calories
