In 1987 a small company named Huawei was started in Shenzhen. After more than 30 years of development, the company has now beaten Apple and become the world’s second largest maker of smartphones. It has also become the world’s supplier (供应者) of 5G. In China and even in the world, Huawei is a wonder. Although it started producing mobile phones not many years ago, it has become one of the most famous phone companies.
But recently, Huawei faces some difficulties. The US government made a law to stop its sales in America. American officials said Huawei gave information that it collected to the Chinese government. At the same time, the US government planned to stop selling parts and services to Huawei. They believed that Huawei’s business would be hurt this way.
“We have never received such a request from the Chinese government and we have never tried to get into other systems to collect information,” Ren Zhengfei, Huawei’s president said. “The law would have little effect on our company. Huawei has enough ability to deal with the problems,” Ren added.
In an interview several years ago, Ren Zhengfei said, “I started Huawei with only £4000 at the beginning, but now it has become a 100 billion company. The experience was not as romantic as you imagine.”
Facing the law of the US, Huawei is growing. Huawei’s smartphone sales around the world rose 50 percent compared with a year earlier in the first three months of 2019. At the same time, sales from both Samsung and Apple fell. So far Huawei has grown into the world’s largest telecommunication equipment supplier (供应商), selling in 170 countries. It may beat Samsung as the largest smartphone maker in the near future.

Coral reefs are home to more than 25% of all sea animals. About 850 million people depend on them for food and living. But 70%-90% of the world’s coral reefs may disappear by the year of 2050 due to ocean warming and pollution. The Allen Coral Atlas(ACA), the first real-time global coral reefs map, has been recently created to help turn the situation around.
The map is named after Paul Allen, who provides financial support. With his help, the satellite remote sensing technology was first used to study coral reefs. A team of researchers have taken over 2 million photos of coral reefs around the world at the depth of 15 metres under the sea with this technology. Those underwater photos have been connected with GPS systems by a self-developed software. In this way, the global online map has been built. To make it more correct and detailed, the team reached out to over 900 scientists and organizations from around the world, generously sharing almost 500 of their own datasets of coral reefs. The datasets enable the team to mark the exact locations of the reefs on the map.
▲ . It is updated every two weeks, together with the position information from the GPS system. It allows experts to see real-time information about reefs and work on coral science activities. The ACA has also produced a bleaching monitoring system to make its datasets rich. So experts have an opportunity to monitor the bleaching degrees in the coral reefs and make early decisions to save them. For managers or policy makers, the ACA can help view and deal with geospatial data for decisions about which ocean area should be protected.
The ACA is free online for anyone. This user-friendly interactive platform has functional features such as zoom in, zoom out, mini-map and measure distance. Users are allowed to provide feedback to improve the quality of coral reef data.
In the future, the team hopes to use mapping technology of the ACA in inland areas instead of only focusing on coastlines so that we can better understand the interactions of land and sea.

During the boring long days, I didn’t feel good. “How could I live without my favorite sport?” I thought. It all started one evening after a nine-to-five day. I was sitting at home when an ad came on the television. “Try skydiving.” it said. The next day, I went to the skydiving school in my town. At the end of the day’s lessons, I knew I found the right sport for me.
I will never forget my first jump. Five of us walked to the runway and got into a plane. I was afraid, but the others were talking and smiling, and I started to feel a little relaxed. It was a beautiful, cloudless day and the sun was just going down. Soon it was time to jump. As I jumped from the plane, I shouted. But then everything became quiet. It was the most wonderful four minutes of my life.
From the first jump, I was hooked. I started spending all my free time skydiving. It became my reason for living. Things were going really well. Then an accident happened on my 104th jump. I broke my both legs, right arm and nose. I stayed in hospital for six months, but I still couldn’t forget skydiving.

So here I was, although unhappy to make the two-hour journey through fog — the thick clouds. By the time I saw how thick it was near the top of the mountain, I’d gone too far to turn back. Nothing could be worth this, I thought.
“I’ll stay for lunch, but I’m heading back down as soon as the fog lifts,” I announced when I arrived.
“But I need you to drive me to the garage to pick up my car,” Carolyn said, “Could we at least do that, Mum?”
I agreed. After ten minutes on the mountain road, we turned a corner and stopped. On the top of the mountain were tulips, here and there. A lot of questions filled my mind. Who created such beauty? Why? How?
As we were nearer, we saw a sign that read: “Answers to the Questions I Know You Are Asking.” The first answer was: “One Woman—Two Hands, Two Feet, and Very Little Brain.” The second was: “One at a Time.” The third: “Started in 1958.”
I was so moved by what we had seen. “She changed the world.” I finally said, “One bulb at a time. She started over 60 years ago, probably just the beginning of an idea, but she kept at it.”
“Imagine,” I said, “if I’d had an idea and worked at it, just a little bit every day, what might I have achieved?”
Carolyn looked at me, smiling. “Start tomorrow,” she said. “Better yet, start today.”

In 1994, Richard Sears decided to put the ancient Chinese characters online. Then, in 2002, he did it. That is the beginning of the Chinese Etymology (汉字字源) website. “My website did not get much attention for the next few years. Until one day in 2011, it suddenly got a lot of attention. I got a few thousand emails, and a few million visitors and people started calling me ‘Uncle Hanzi’,” Sears said with a smile. Hanzi means Chinese characters. He has put more than 96, 000 ancient Chinese characters onto the website. “When I study each character, I wonder what the ancient Chinese thought,” said Sears.
After visiting many Chinese cities, Sears learned more about China and ancient Chinese culture. He said when he came to China in the last century, few Chinese could speak good English. “However, you can hear English in many places in China now. Chinese language and culture were mysterious and not known by people in most countries then, but now, more and more people in the world are learning Chinese, even Chinese history, traditional Chinese medicine and so on,” Sears added.
Now, the 70-year-old American has made his home in China. “When I die, I hope my website will live on, and I’m planning to write a book about my research. This will be my gift to China,” he said.

Whether from news reports or social media articles, you may know that 5G is coming.
5G is the 5th generation network. It is a new network (网络) after 1G, 2G, 3G and 4G and it can connect everyone and everything together. 5G networks will cover many cities in China soon. 5G means super-fast data (数据) speed, one can download a two-hour movie for fewer than 10 seconds, and it is making our lives more and more convenient.
5G will make self-driving cars possible. For safety, self-driving cars need super-fast data transmission (传输) to communicate with their nearby environment. 5G is just what makes self-driving cars achieve this. Eyen airplanes will become “smart” in the near future. Passengers will be able to use 5G networks in the air to connect to the Internet or place orders for food and drinks.
5G will be a big help for students who take online classes. Many people live in poor areas in the world where there are no schools. But with 5G, this will change. Students all over the world will be able to see places like the Great Wall without leaving their rooms.
It will be also easier for doctors to treat patients remotely by 5G. It means caring for patients from far away.
The facts listed above are only a part of what 5G will make possible and popular. Just as in the early days of the Internet in the 1990s, few could see how it could change the world. The same will surely be true of 5G. With 5G, many things do not seem like dreams anymore. Now let’s get ready to say goodbye to 4G and welcome the coming of 5G.

【推荐3】There has been a lot of news recently about 5G, but what is this technology(技术) and how might it change our lives?
What is 5G?
5G stands for the next step in the development of technology to replace 4G system. Earlier“G”systems were designed to improve mobile communication operations. The new 5G system is expected to allow more users to do more things at a faster speed. It will move well beyond mobile network technology to influence many more industries than other “G” systems.
When will 5G be in use?
Before we can all use 5G, wireless companies and phone makers will have to complete a whole new system. New phones and communication equipment(设备)must be built. China is expected to put 5G onto the market sometime in 2020, while European nations are likely to build their systems more slowly over time. In the USA, the first 5G-ready phones can be found in the market in the first half of this year. The first 5G iPhone, however, is not expected until 2020. 4G phones will work on 5G networks, but not at 5G speeds.
What can 5G do?
Wireless industry groups say 5G will help the development of the future “smart cities”. 5G is also expected to connect self-driving cars and support new technologies. Higher 5G speeds could also help doctors to commonly do remote operations(远程操作). Factories and businesses could use 5G technology to increase automation(自动化)and improve the collection of information.
________
Many more kinds of data(数据) will be traveling across 5G networks. Much of the data could include personal details about people, businesses or government organizations. The increased data flow would give internet attackers a lot more possibilities to steal and misuse data. What’s more, the wider use of a 5G wireless network means any breakdown of the system would have more serious results. Such difficulties could influence public safety as well as world economic activity. For example, a failure during a doctor’s remotely guided operation could lead to the death of a patient. Or a network breakdown could cause self-driving cars to crash.
