Today there are 6.4 billion people on the earth. By the year 2050 there may be 12.5 billion. There are many people to feed. We need more and more food.
One way to produce more food is growing stronger plants. For thousands of years, farmers have made plants better. Every season, they pick the best plants for the next season. It works very slowly. Since 1983, scientists have been able to change plants more quickly by changing their genetic (遗传的) material. Foods from plants grown in this way are called genetically modified (转基因的) foods, or GM foods.
By changing the genetic material of a plant, it is possible to make new plants. Scientists make plants which are strong against plant diseases. They can also help in our diseases; a kind of rice will be grown, for example, which stops people becoming blind.
Rich countries produce GM foods because they are easy to grow and bring in more money. Poor countries are interested in them because they help produce more food.
GM plants are not natural. No one knows how good or bad they are. Making GM foods is only one way of feeding people in 2050. There are strong feelings against them because they are unnatural. They may feed people, then hurt them or their children later. But both rich and poor countries are interested in their uses, and they are not going to go away. 文章大意:本文主要介绍了Sora视频模型的功效及面临的问题和风险。

【推荐1】On Feb. 15, a new video model called Sora promises to create a video up to a minute long from a short text description. Just tell Sora your idea, and watch it make a video right before your eyes. Sora is described as “eye-popping”, “world-changing”, and “breathtaking, yet scaring.”

The videos from OpenAI’s Sora are full of details. One video of a Tokyo street scene shows that Sora has learned how objects fit together in 3-D: the camera goes into the scene to follow a couple as they walk past a row of shops. Sora knows how things should look in real life.

Sora looks at many videos and learns from them by breaking them into very small bits. It uses these bits to make a new video. The new video is grey at first and very messy. Then, Sora fixes the video until it looks good and smooth. Sora also gets help from ChatGPT, which turns the user’s short sentences into clear instructions. This helps Sora make the video just as you asked.

Sora may find “busy” pictures hard to understand. For example, when a person moves, things around them change. In one video created by Sora, a grandma blows the candle on a birthday cake, but the flame (火焰) doesn’t move. Sora may not be able to tell “left” from “right”.

OpenAI also says that Sora deals with occlusion well. But one problem is that they fail to follow objects when they are out of sight. For example, if a truck passes in front of a street sign, the sign might not reappear afterward.

In a video of a papercraft underwater scene, Sora has added what looks like cuts between different pieces of footage (镜头), and the model has kept the same style between them. But it’s not perfect. In the Tokyo video, cars to the left look smaller than the people walking beside them. They also pop (突然出现) in and out between the trees. “There’s some work to be done,” says Brooks. “For example, if someone goes out of view for a long time, they won’t come back.”

“Sora seems like a very important leap forward,” says Sam Gregory, a human rights organization that specializes in the use and misuse of video technology. “But there are two sides of the coin,” he says. “The meaningful abilities help many more people to be storytellers using video. And there are also possibilities for misuse.”

OpenAI has also realized the risks that come with a video model. The OpenAI team plans to draw on the safety testing. “We’ll need to get more feedback (反馈) and learn more about the types of risks that need to be solved with video before it would make sense for us to put Sora into use,” says Ramesh.

1. Which of the following words has the closest meaning to “occlusion”?
A.being seenB.being followedC.being coveredD.being dropped
2. The following sentence would best be placed at the end of _________.
Perhaps it will be an imagination tool or a misinformation machine.
A.Paragraph 4B.Paragraph 3C.Paragraph 2D.Paragraph 1
3. The next part of the passage may be about _________.
A.the safety testingB.the misuse of Sora
C.two sides of SoraD.another video model
4. What can most possibly be the writer’s real purpose?
A.To encourage us to use Sora to make short videos.
B.To explain to us how to use Sora to create short videos.
C.To remind us to care about the problems and risks Sora has.
D.To introduce what advantages Sora will bring to our daily life.

文章大意:本文主要介绍了关于时尚产业所造成的危害,以及之后改变的趋势。

【推荐2】There you are in your favorite clothing store. You don’t really need to buy anything, but everything is so cheap and fashion! Before you know it, you leave the store with bags and bags of new clothes. On the surface, this doesn’t seem so bad. However, there are a lot of hidden costs behind the cheap price tags.

To be honest, the fashion industry is terrible for the planet. Not only does it use up a lot of resources, but it also heavily pollutes the environment with chemicals and unwanted waste.

Fashion is one of the least sustainable (可持续发展的) industries on the planet, commented Michael Stanley-Jones, a program management officer with the United Nations Environment Program. “We’ve all become our own waste managers, storing fashion waste in our closets, “ he noted.

It doesn’t just take up space in our closets, though. It also ends up in landfills (垃圾场) , too. In fact, three out of every five clothes end up either being fired or sent to landfills.

But, thankfully, the fashion trends are changing.

People are thinking about what changes they can make to become sustainable, therefore, shopping secondhand has become an increasingly popular and eco-friendly choice.

According to a survey, the secondhand market is predicted to reach $80 billion (about 518 billion yuan) by 2029. And, although fast fashion will continue to grow 20 percent over the next 10 years, secondhand fashion is expected to grow an unbelievable 185 percent in that same amount of time.

Secondhand has become more socially acceptable and, for some, cool. Thrifting is now popular on TikTok. “The only true sustainable way to shop is to not shop at all. ” Michael said, “Unless you’re buying clothes that exist.”

1. What is the main idea of paragraphs 2-4?
A.People’s love for fast fashion.B.The harm caused by the fashion industry.
C.The way people waste clothes.D.Reasons why fast fashion is cheap.
2. According to the survey, we know that ________.
A.fast fashion won’t be defeated in the futureB.fast fashion will no longer exist very soon
C.secondhand fashion will become a trendD.secondhand fashion has defeated fast fashion
3. What does the underlined word “Thrifting” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.StoringB.AvoidingC.SortingD.Saving
4. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the article?
A.To introduce young consumers’ habits.B.To inform readers of what is sustainable.
C.To predict the new fashion trend in 2021.D.To show changes in clothing shopping.

文章大意:本文主要介绍了大数据的概念,来源,用途,作用以及其应用。

【推荐3】Many of us have had the same “pleasant surprise”. After you mark a song as a favorite on a music app(程序), it suggests songs of the same kind to listen to.     1

Big data(数据) is a lot of sets of information that are put together so they can be used by a computer program. It can have different kinds of information from many sources(来源), such as information that comes from schools, social media sites, companies, and governments.     2     Another set can have what they like, where they go to school, and how much time they spend on the computer.

3     The government uses it to understand how many people travel on buses or trains. The information is then used to make bus or train systems better. Companies use big data, too. It helps them understand who buys their products. For example, one company uses weather data to see when people eat the most ice-cream.

Big data can be used for good reasons. Some hospitals use big data to predict if a baby who is born too early will get sick. The hospital can then take extra steps to take care of that baby so he or she does not get sick.     4     It can be used to predict which kinds of people are likely to break the law or hurt others, even if they have not done anything wrong.

5     It is because the computer programs used to look at big data and understand it are written by people. People think a certain way. Because they think a certain way, they build a model of those ideas. These ideas are then used to look at the data. Sometimes, these ideas are helpful for people or businesses. Other times, bad ideas can cause problems for certain groups of people.

A.Big data can be used in many ways.
B.How can big data be used for good and bad things?
C.Big data can also be used for bad reasons.
D.One set of data can have people’s names and addresses.
E.In fact, this magic, mind-reading power depends on data.
