Would you like to improve yourself? Would you like to be a better person? Good news! Here we've got some tips for you.
Tip 1Be Kind
Remember to be kind to yourself. You can do simple things to take care of yourself, like getting enough sleep to make yourself energetic. If you don't do like that, you will not bring anything good to anyone else. When you decide to show more kindness to yourself and to others, life changes quickly in a better way.
Tip 2Be Encouraging
It's amazing what a kind word or touch can do. When I was a kid, I went to a lot of schools. It always made me scared, and I was very nervous and unsure of myself. One time, a teacher touched my head and said, smiling, "Don't worry﹣you'll have a good time with us in this classroom." I still remember my teacher's words.
All of us may come across some trouble in our life, and a bit of encouragement can be remembered for years.
Tip 3
When my sister and I were kids, my mum didn't have a car and our school was a 30﹣minute walk. Our neighbor offered to drive us to school when she dropped her son off, and that saved my mother a lot of time. Giving help to others can bring you happiness.
When thinking about how to become a better person, remember that small changes are also important. But "be kind to yourself" comes first. As the old saying goes, "You can't pour from an empty cup." So in order to be a person who can give more love to this world, you have to fall in love with yourself first.
1. The underlined word "It" in Tip 2refers to (指代)
A.going to a lot of schools
B.getting along with classmates
C.talking with the teacher
D.staying in the classroom
2. What can be the best title for Tip 3?
A.Be Helpful
B.Be Polite
C.Be Outgoing
D.Be Honest
3. The sentence "You can't pour from an empty cup." in the last paragraph means "     ."
A.To encourage others, smile to them often
B.To become a better person, start with small changes
C.To give more love to the world, be kind to yourself first
D.To make friends with neighbors, drive their kids to school

【推荐1】There was once a captain who loved money so much that he cheated his sailors at the end of every trip and took their wages.

On the last day of one trip, the ship was in a small port. It was winter time, and the sea was very cold, so the captain said to his sailors, “If one of you stays in the water during the whole night, I will give him my ship. But if he comes out before the sun appears, I shall get his wages.”

The sailors had heard about the captain’s cheating, so they didn’t believe in him. But then one of them, who thought that he was cleverer than the captain, said that he would do it. He got into the water and stayed in it although it was very cold. When it was nearly morning, some fishermen lit a fire on the shore about half a mile away.

“You are cheating,” the captain said to the sailor, “The fire's warming you.”

“But it's half a mile away,” said the sailor. “A fire is fire,” answered the captain.

“Perhaps you think that you are clever because you have won my wages, but you can't cook a chicken,” said the sailor.

“I can,” answered the captain.

“If you cook this chicken,” said the sailor, “I shall work for you without wages for seven years, but if you can’t, you will give me your ship.”

The captain agreed, took the chicken and said, “Where's the fire?”

文章大意:本文主要说明了漫无目的的重复练习可能不会带来进步,甚至可能导致表现下降,而有目的的练习才可以得到提高,文章还介绍了有目的的练习的几个特点。

【推荐2】①Everyone has goals and most people believe practising repeatedly will help us get a success. Actually, when we reach an acceptable and automatic (无意识的) performance, the additional (额外的) practice won’t make us improve. Suppose we’re learning to play the piano. At first, we know nothing. After taking lessons, we can gain skills as soon as we just practise a few times. Unluckily, after we can play some pieces well with little thoughts, we may find some weak points don’t disappear no matter how often we practise. That’s because automatic abilities will weaken without making efforts on purpose.

②So what do we need if we want to get further improvement? Purposeful practice could be a successful method. It’s different from just practising repeatedly. It has the following features.

It’s all about putting a large number of small steps together to reach a longer-term purpose. For example, passing your piano exam is not a clear goal. It may not guide you to practise effectively (有效地). You will be more successful if you change it into: “Play this piece of the music at a proper speed without a mistake three times.” That’s because it’s easier to judge whether this practice has led to a success.

④Feedback also plays an important role in purposeful practice. It’s a kind of information about how good your performance is. You have to know whether you are doing something right. If not, how you can correct it. Without feedback, you cannot find out what you need to improve or how close you get to your goals.

⑤Another key to achieving purposeful practice is getting out of your comfort zone. It means trying to do something that you couldn’t do before. Most of us like practising what we’re good at. In fact, it’s useless to focus on something we’ve already known. Getting out of comfort zone isn’t about “trying harder,” but about “trying differently”. For example, a professional striker (足球前锋) needs to practise not only shooting, but also other football skills like goalkeeping.

⑥Purposeful practice isn’t everything, but if you want to keep improving, it can be more useful than usual methods.

1. What can we learn about purposeful practice from the first two paragraphs?

A.Setting specific goals is necessary for purposeful practice.
B.To make longer-term progress, we need purposeful practice.
C.Purposeful practice is an effective way to help you pass exams.

3. Who is having the purposeful practice according to the writer?
A.Tim seldom checks his performance after he practises swimming.
B.Jason sets “getting a good grade” as his goal to guide him to study Maths.
C.Linda never stops trying some new writing methods to improve her writing.
D.Rose spends most of her time practising the singing skills she’s already known.
4. What’s the best title for the passage?
A.Not All Practice Makes PerfectB.Practise Till You Get Everything Right
