Seven-year-old Maggie Kuznia loves books, but she loves sharing the stories she has read even more. Once or     1     (two) a week, the little girl visits the elderly at Good Samaritan Society in Minnesota. By     2     (offer) to read a book to the old people living there, she has not only made progress in storytelling, but also made many new friends.

How did Maggie get into the habit?     3     (actual), Maggie’s mom, Tiffany Kuznia, works at Good Samaritan Society. She usually takes her daughter with her to work. On a snowy day, Maggie made a decision. She put some books instead of her game player into her bag. She announced in     4     (excite) she was going to read to those old people.

With time, Maggie has become so popular     5     the old people that she even has “regulars (常客)” she reads to every week. She often stays with each one for an hour. To Maggie’s delight (高兴), they are always willing to spend more time with her. She is regarded     6     a granddaughter of their own.

A beach cleanup brings people together to take trash (垃圾) away from a beach. Many     1     (university) organize the cleanups. And they often work with local governments to     2     (proper) deal with any trash that is collected. My husband, Josh, and I go to as many beach cleanups as we can. We even wrote about how much we have enjoyed beach cleanups on our blog. It is one of our     3     things to do.

You might not think that     4     (pick) up trash sounds like fun. But cleaning up a beach, especially if there is a lot of trash, is very helpful. My first time joining a beach cleanup was in Costa Rica. Our group walked 30 minutes to a small beach called “Playa Basura” . We worked hard     9     about two hours and filled over 100 trash bags. The difference was amazing. Trash on beaches like Playa Basura won’t end     10     people stop trash from getting into the oceans. But every beach cleanup helps.

Han Qian, the manager of the Volunteer Department of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics Organizing Committee (组委会), has finished his work successfully. Back in 2008, Han Qian volunteered as a     1     (向导) during the Beijing Summer Olympics.

“Beijing is making history as the first     2     (城市) in the world to hold both the Summer and Winter Olympics. I’m     3     (自豪的) to take part in both,” said Han. “Being a volunteer is different from organizing them, the latter needs more thinking and planning,

The cold weather is another problem to     7     (克服), as some events will be held outdoors. The outdoor volunteers need to have physical training to prepare for their work. The organizing committee also provides hats and     8     (外套) for them.

“However, many volunteers have developed in winter sports     9     (广泛地),” Han said. “I’ve seen them post pictures of     10     (他们自己) skiing and skating. And I’m happy that they think volunteering is meaningful.”

Yesterday morning, our school trained us to escape (逃离) from an earthquake. When the first alarm (警报) rang, we stayed under the desks and protected our head with arms.     1     the second and third alarms, we ran out of the classroom one by one. Suddenly, the girl next to me fell down. I helped     2     stand up as soon as possible. Neither of us was afraid. Our teacher told us that it was the most important thing     3     stay calm in the earthquake. Three minutes later, the whole class stood still     4     the middle of the playground.

I think the activity     5     very necessary for us. It helps us to know what we should do in an earthquake.
