文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章结合科学研究解释了引起人“害羞”的原因:父母遗传、家庭规模和出生地点。同时给出了克服害羞心理的合理建议。

【推荐1】Are you shy? If you are, you are not alone. In fact, close to 50 percent of people are shy. Almost 80 percent of people feel shy at some point in their lives. These days, shyness is becoming more and more common. Now, scientists are trying to understand shyness.     1

Is it possible to be born shy? Many scientists say yes. They say 15 to 20 percent of babies behave shyly. These babies are a little quieter and more watchful than other babies. Interestingly, these shy babies usually have shy parents.    2

3     Scientists at Harvard University studied shy children. They found that 66 percent of them had older brothers and sisters. As a result, they became shy. At the same time, children with no brothers or sisters may be shy as well. Growing up alone, they often play by themselves. They are not able to learn the same social skills as children from big families.

You may also be shy because of where you were born. When scientists studied shyness in different countries, they found surprising differences. In Japan, most people said they were shy. But in Israel, only one of three people said so. What explains the difference? One scientist says the Japanese and Israelis have different opinions of failure. In Japan, when people do not succeed, they feel bad about themselves.     4     In Israel, the opposite is true. Israelis often blame failure on outside reasons, such as family, teachers, friends, or bad luck.

For shy people, it can be difficult to make friends, speak in class, and even get a good job.     5     They suggest trying new things and practicing conversation. And don’t forget — if you are shy, you are not the only one.

Presentation(展示) skills are important at school and in other areas of life.     1     Some don’t like it because they get nervous about public speaking. Here’s some advice to help you make presentations easier and more interesting.

Get organized

The best presentations are well planned and clearly organized. Think about topics(话题) and choose a proper one. In one topic, three or four main ideas will be fine. The beginning of your presentation should be interesting.     2

Use photos or videos

Try to use photos or videos. These things make your performance more exciting and help you remember what you’re going to say.     3     The “star” of your presentation should be you, not your photos or videos.

Practice before your performance

You need to practice many times before the “big day”. Practice saying any unusual words. Then write the main ideas on small cards to help you remember.     4     Finally, you can record your performance or ask a friend to watch you and then make suggestions for improvements.

    5

Always look at the people who watch your presentation. Stand up straight, but don’t stand still or move around much. Finally, be sure to thank your audience when you finish speaking. It’s a simple but good way to end any presentation.

A.For example, you can tell a short, funny story to make people laugh.
B.Connect with your audience(观众)
C.Practice in front of a mirror and time your presentation.
D.However, you shouldn’t use too many.
E.Some people don’t like giving presentations because they don’t know what to say.
