【推荐1】Did you sleep the day away on March 21? Well, you should have done that because it was World Sleeping Day. This is the one day of the year when people around the world care about their sleep and ask themselves a lot of questions about sleep.
Why do we need sleep? Nobody as yet can give a correct answer to this question. However, tests have shown that lack of sleep over about four weeks leads to a strong drop in body temperature, great weight loss and finally sickness.
Different people need different amounts of sleep. Eight hours a night is considered the average amount of sleep. For teenagers the least number of sleeping hours advised by doctors are ten hours for primary school students, nine for junior highs and eight for senior highs.
Some people seem to get along just fine with very little sleep at night. Leading American scientist Thomas Edison said that sleep was a waste of time. He did, however, take naps during the day. On the other hand, Albert Einstein, another great scientist, said he needed at least ten hours’ sleep a night.
Here are some of the most useful suggestions, for a good night’s sleep.
Go to bed regularly. Use your bed only to sleep. Don’t exercise in the evening. Keep the bedroom dark and quiet. Drink a glass of milk before sleep.

【推荐2】Lately, researchers have done an experiment on whether online brain games can improve people’s IQ. More than 8, 600 people aged 18 to 60 were asked to play online brain games to improve their memory, reasoning(推理)and other skills for at least 10 minutes a day, three times a week. They were compared with more than 2,700 people who didn’t play any brain games, but spent some similar time on the Internet. All participants(参与者)were given an “IQ test” before and after the experiment.

Researchers found the people who did the brain training weren’t better on the test after six weeks than people who had simply been on the Internet. “If you’re playing these games like SNAKE(贪吃蛇)because they’re fun, that’s totally fine.”said Adrian Owen, the study’s leader.” “But if you’re expecting these games to improve your IQ. Our stduies suugest they don’t work.”

It’s also found that brain games which are supposed to improve memory, reasoning and other cognitive(认知的)skills are played by millions of people worldwide, though few studies have examined if the games work. Not many studies suggest the skill is used in these brain games transfer(迁移)to the real world.

Instead of playing brain games, professor Kramer from the research team said people would be better off getting some exercise. He said physical activities can help produce new brain cells(细胞).

Brain games might be useful if they are kind of challenging. If people are enjoying the brain games, they probably aren’t being challenged and would rather play a common video game. Phillip said people should consider learning a new language or sport if they really want to improve their brain power. “Computer games were not an easy shortcut(捷径). Getting smart is hard work.” he added.

【推荐3】Living next to next is the principle (原则) of a neighbor. Good neighborliness is the ideal to be aimed at. As the saying goes, no man is an island; he has to live with his neighbors. To make life easy and pleasant he must cooperate with his neighbors.

Whether one likes it or not, one cannot do without neighbors. Normally one may think he can do without neighbors because he can manage all comforts and services, so the services or the need for friend may not happen. However, the sympathy (同情), admiration and appreciation which a neighbor may offer will have great humanizing influence. To share one's view and sometimes even sadness, one needs some neighbors.

But all neighbors are not always keeping the friendly relationship. Stresses and tension (紧张) develop because of misunderstanding. Very often children may be the cause for tense feelings. The neighbor's son may pick a flower or a fruit from your garden and an argument may follow. Again he may throw his ball at your window breaking it. These are common cases so far as the younger one is concerned but it is for the elders to view them with calmness and make up for it. This may read easy on paper but not so in real life. But being broad minded, one must be able to tolerate (容忍). Another reason for tension may be the animals. Your neighbor’s dog may be real trouble or his chickens would come into your garden and eat away your plants.

In all these cases to keep up good neighborliness, some understanding between the neighbors is important. Small differences can be easily patched up or worked out. Try to be friendly and the problem will not be difficult to solve. Care can at times play a good part and help the neighbors in a small or big way. Nobody is perfect and it is better not to speak ill of your neighbors. A cheerful word, a nod or a small talk will strengthen the feeling of good neighborliness.

Neighborliness is not only for people but it is also largely important between neighboring countries. History has got lot to teach on this. Unless countries learn to live as good neighbors, there cannot be peace on earth. So children must be taught at home and in the school to cooperate with the neighbors and be friendly with them. The basic rule is to give and take and to develop a sense that the other man has as much right as you do, and some degree of tolerance is very necessary.
