Rolling cheese—England This festival is celebrated in May. It takes place on Cooper’s Hill. A large wheel of cheese (奶 酪) is rolled down from Cooper’s Hill. The festival is actually a race where people run down from the hill after the rolling cheese. The first person to cross the finish line at the bottom of the hill wins the cheese. |
The burning man—The United States The Burning Man Festival lasts 8 days. The festival takes place in the Black Rock Desert. The best part of the festival is the burning of a large sculpture of a man. |
Pouring water—Thailand The Songkran Festival is the celebration of the New Year in Thailand. Rather than a single day, Thailand celebrates the New Year from April 13th to April 15th. 3 . Do you have a mobile phone? Do you send text messages to your friends and family?
Text messaging or “texting” is becoming very popular. But, scientists have discovered that texting can give us problems with our hands. Be careful! Too much texting can cause swelling (肿胀) in our fingers and wrists (手腕). Our fingers are not made for pushing small keys, over and over. Scientists call this problem RSI.
We spoke to Harriet Wilson, a doctor who treats many patients with RSI. She said we needed to see how much time we were spending in typing text messages. If we are spending more than 10 to 15 minutes at one time, we could have problems in the future.
We also talked with Dr. Harjeet Deepa who treats RSI patients. He told us that the youngest patient she had treated was a five-year-old girl. She wasn’t doing well at school, so her parents took her for treatment. It was found that she had RSI in her hands. It was so severe that she couldn’t hold a pencil.
As mobile phones develop, they are getting smaller and their keys are getting closer. Texting with a smaller phone is worse than using a larger phone with bigger keys. Using a computer keyboard and playing video games can also cause the same problem. So, more and more people could find themselves with RSI.
Many university students and teenagers have RSI, as they do not know the danger of spending so much time using computers, video games and mobile phones. If we don’t do something about this, too many young people could grow up in terrible pain.

C.Did the writer want to introduce an illness? | D.Did the writer warn us to use electronics less? |
4 . Quiet classes, endless (无穷的) exams and long hours at school. This might sound like the pressure most Chinese students face. But a group of students from UK, experienced it for a month. Five Chinese teachers were sent there to teach in their Chinese style. Things don’t go as well as they planned at first. The British students found these classes boring. “It’s very hard to say which education system (制度) is better. But I think we should learn from each other,” said one Chinese teacher Li Aiyun.
Though the education system is so different between Britain and China. We agree that getting education is the most important part in a person’s life. It is true that people with better education have more chances to choose a good job while people with little or no education don’t. It seems that the aim (目标) of education is to make people get jobs. But many people don’t agree with that. Some people may think that a person should spend the best years of his life getting education only for making a living (谋生). This was probably the earliest reason of education. In fact, if education is just a way of making a living, people don’t need to spend so much time in school. For example, they don’t need to learn subjects like history and geography. It is clear that education is much more than teaching a man to get a way of living.
Education is well-rounded and it is mainly for improving a man. It is not only to teach him to speak, read and write, but also to develop his creative thinking and other abilities.

5 . Do you want to be a volunteer on Weekends or during the vacation? The volunteer work can help you make more friends and learn new skills. The most important thing is that you can get some useful guides to your future job. Here are some places for you to do volunteer work.
Hospitals
Are you interested in medicine? Do you enjoy helping patients? The volunteering in the local hospital may be the right thing for you. There are many volunteer chances for children between 13 and 16 years old. They include transporting (运送) patients with a nurse, talking to them and reading to them.
Nursing homes

6 . Mobile phones are playing an important role in our life. Some people even say that they can’t live without mobile phones. In the USA, some cities made a law (制定法律) on using mobile phones. According to the law, people will pay a fine if they use mobile phones when they walking across the street. What do you think of the law? Two students have shared their ideas.
George, 13, New York
Every year, there are too many traffic accidents caused by (由……引起) people looking at their mobile phones. A lot of people were badly hurt or even died because of this. I think the new law will be helpful. There will be fewer accidents than before. The law can help to warn (警告) people not to use their mobile phones while they are walking across the street.
Linda, 14, Chicago
I don’t think it will help people very much. Some people may have some important messages or e-mails. If they can’t reply to them at once, they may miss something important. What’s more (而且), people should pay more attention to (关注) some safety rules. They shouldn’t just give up using mobile phones on the street. I think it’s their right (权利) to use mobile phones any time.

7 . I think that Earth Hour is a really good way to let people know that little things they do can make a big difference to the earth.
Earth Hour started in Sydney, Australia, in March 2007.Now, cities all around the world join in for Earth Hour. During Earth Hour people turn off their lights, televisions and computers to save the earth.
A lot of energy is saved around the world during Earth Hour, but people should think more than one hour of energy saving. People should help the earth every hour of every day. Walking to school or the shop saves energy. Using both sides of the paper saves energy. Turning off the tap when you brush your teeth saves energy. When you stop and think about it, there are so many simple things people can do every day to rescue the earth.
Being part of Earth Hour connects people around the world for something good. I am going to be part of Earth Hour again next year. I hope you will be too.

8 . Rules or laws are good ways to control some bad behaviors (行为). It is common that someone plays music on his or her mobile phone loudly when you are taking public transportation. Sometimes the peaceful environment will be broken when others make noises with their mobile phones. It brings rather terrible experiences and feelings. So rules have been made to stop such impolite actions.
When you are in public places, it is not hard to be influenced by others who play or talk on their mobile phones loudly. The sound of someone’s mobile phone can break up the quietness in the library where almost everyone is busy studying on reading books. While sitting in a restaurant, a diner (用餐者) who is watching videos loudly may influence your mood of having diner. You will feel very upset. With mobile phones widely use, the daily environment has also been changed.
With the rules made, the public environment will be improved. Some people who break the rules will be punished. Firstly, workers in public places will advise them not to do that. If they do not make a change or stop their bad behaviors, the police will come and take them away.
The public place is an environment where everyone can enjoy relaxing their feelings. In my opinion, keeping quiet in public is a necessary rule for everybody. No matter where you are, try to consider other’s needs instead of only yours.

9 . We are humans, and it’s not always easy to get along with everyone all the time. Sometimes we hurt people’s feelings and make them angry or upset. We need to do something for them so we should apologize (道歉) to make them forgive (原谅) us. Apologies are one of the daily tools we use to build good friendships and relationships. When you say “I’m sorry”, it’s because you probably think you are wrong, or you think something you did or said hurt another person. Saying “I’m sorry” is more than just words. You also mean that you respect the other person and you care about his or her feelings. After apologizing, you might feel a little better. The other person probably will, too.
When you apologize in a proper way, you can feel good because you are trying to make things right again. If someone is upset or angry because of something you did, you’ll want to set things right. Here are some times when an apology can make a difference:
● If you hurt or teased someone, even if you didn’t mean to make fun of him or her.
● If you lost or broke things that belonged to someone else.
● If you did something that you knew was wrong—like telling a lie or breaking a rule on purpose.
● If you didn’t do something you were supposed to do—like keeping a promise.
When someone apologizes to you, you should get ready to forgive him or her. No matter what happened, just move on. Or you might not feel like being friendly again right away.
It doesn’t mean you have to be friends just because someone apologizes. It’s polite to accept and acknowledge (承认) an apology, but anything more is up to you!

10 . Imagine you’re taking an exam, and you find it difficult to answer those questions. And time’s running out. Would you waste the little chance that you get to cheat? Probably, some of us have once cheated in the test.
Certainly, it’s not correct. It’s important to follow the rules because the world would turn into a total mess without rules. However, with the time passing by and the development of society, some rules have become barriers (障碍) to people’s success. A famous person once said, “We have so many rules in life about everything. But it’s impossible to be a creator if you’re too well-behaved. You have to think outside the box.
Some are created to restrain people, and some become old and boring. So sometimes, it’s okay to break the rules. In 1823, William Webb Ellis was a pupil at Rugby School. He was tired of playing football in the old way, so the player took the ball in his arms and ran with it during a school football match. In this way, he started a new sport: rugby (英式橄榄球), named after his school.
Since you’ve already known why someone wants to break the rules, now you need to learn how to do it.
Learn the rules first. Qi Baishi was a talented Chinese artist, but he spent much time learning traditional drawing and painting skills before he found his own styles. Master them before you break them—that’s what you can learn from great minds.
Evaluate (评估) if the result is worth them. Each person has his or her own values. Before breaking the rules, think over whether they will go against your values. And the moment you decide to do that, you must be ready to have a wise thought to face the bad results.
